  1. I would agree - he hits him in the back or leg, Hamilton goes to first, the ump warns both benches, and the incident is over. Ump had no choice with where Diamond's pitch went. My guess, though, is that we'll get the benefit of the doubt on any close calls the rest of the game.
  2. Both benches were warned after Diamond's pitch. All it would have done is get Swarzak tossed as well. Be patient. This is a four-game series. Guarantee he gets nailed before they finish up Sunday.
  3. Butera! Butera! Butera!
  4. And then, mercifully, it was over.
  5. To be fair, at the start of the season I heard a number of pundits thinking Dozier was ready (it was actually a little bit of a surprise he started in Rochester) and Florimon wasn't even on the radar scope. He's played his way into this over the season.
  6. I'm following the game on MLB's Gameday - it looks like the ump today has a small strike zone. Does that correspond to what people watching the game are seeing, or am I getting bad intel?
  7. I agree that Florimon would be better ninth. I also wonder why bat Plouffe as high as he is - he is in a massive slump. Carson or even Casilla might be a better choice until he gets his bat working again.
  8. I may be out camping, but if not I think I'll try to swing by. I will be wearing my recently purchased New Britain Rock Cats cap.
  9. The problem comes when it is not immediately obvious how long it will be before the player can perform. Every body heals slightly differently, and sometimes all you can do is trial-and-error (in the batting cage, on the field, etc) to tell when a player is ready to return. Can you imagine the outcry on this site (and others) if the Twins regularly put players on the 15-day DL immediately, only to have them ready to play in three days and have to sit another twelve for no reason? As long as we're not chasing a playoff spot and having a short bench doesn't mean all that much, there's little cost in waiting a week - you can always backdate the DL placement up to 10 days, so the player doesn't miss any more time whether you place them on it immediately or a week later.
  10. As an outsider looking in (one who has virtually no knowledge of medicine), my biggest problem boils down to "learning from mistakes". We make jokes about TJ surgery based on past results and two months later, boom, the player is getting TJ surgery. Is this normal? I have no idea but it sure seems like they should be learning from previous incidents and jumping on these injuries more quickly at this point. But, again, like almost every other poster on this board, I'm not in the position to make a truly qualified statement on the subject. I guess my question is what is considered the medical standard for treatment in these cases. In most areas of medicine, surgery is considered the option of last resort, because of the potential for complications for even a routine surgery. If there is a chance the injury can be healed without it, it's usually best to try. The complicating factor here, of course, is the lost playing time. In these cases the speed of recovery becomes a factor along with the completeness of the recovery. Should the medically standard treatment plan be different for ballplayers than for the rest of us? I don't know - it's a valid question.
  11. I know what you're saying, but ... could you have possibly imagined, before the season started, any circumstances under which you would be writing this? Heard an interesting point on the radio yesterday - all five of the intended starters going into ST (Baker, Liriano, Blackburn, Marquis, Pavano) are now off the 40-man roster (2 to injury, 3 otherwise). Who woulda thunk?
  12. I'm not opposed to this as long as it's for reason a and not reason b - the idea of losing on purpose, for any reason, just strikes me as wrong. It's dishonest for the fans who still pay money to show up at the ballpark this year. When you pay out the amount it cost to go to a big-league game, the very least you can expect is that they try to win.
  13. I hear there's some guy named Clemens who might be worth a look.
  14. Kind of like sweet & sour - fun to watch, but still leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
  15. I was living near Peoria when they switched from the Cardinals to the Cubs. It didn't really change fan interest all that much. There were a few Cardinals fans who were mildly unhappy, and a few Cubs fans who were mildly pleased, but overall it didn't seem to matter.
  16. That's just a glitch on MiLB Gameday - for some reason, whenever there's a pitching change, the pitcher is listed as replacing himself. It just means Watts came in to pitch, and with Hanson (who was the DH) now playing in the field Watts had to be put in the lineup in Hicks spot.
  17. Leave it to Dick Bremer to give a convoluted explanation of the difference between optioning and outrighting. Correct in what he said, but in so jumbled a fashion it was basically useless.
  18. Twins Lineup Revere CF Mastroianni RF Mauer DH Willingham LF Morneau 1B Doumit C Plouffe 3B Carroll 2B Florimon SS De Vries P
  19. I would hope we're not doing that, but at the same time if we're paying a guy several million dollars a year to play, we have the right to ask the player to assist in whatever it takes to get them back healthy and on the field. Certainly we can try and work with him and fine a way to get the medical information we need that accomodates his phobia, and it sounds like Span is trying to be cooperative, but I can understand the fan's frustrations when a story like this gets out.
  20. I don't mind the delay so much - you can go up to 10 days retroactive, and the only thing we're losing is a bench spot, which we don't need as we're not playing for anything. What get's disturbing is not having accurate diagnosis in the first place, or treatment plans that don't show result. Are we any different than other MLB clubs in that area? I don't know. But it's a legitimate question.
  21. Now we add this to the mix: Span didn't do his MRI today - he's claustrophobic.
  22. My question is, if he's had this before (and I take him at his word for that) why didn't he recognize the symptoms himself? If he suspected it, did he never raise that possibility himself? And how many other doctors has he been to besides those on the Twins staff? I have the same concerns about the Twins medical staff as everyone else, but I have to think there's more to the story than a couple of soundbites from Pavano himself, given in a moment of (understandable) frustration.
  23. I think you've hit upon the key - being able to separate the emotional investment in a particular club with just enjoying being at the ballpark for a game of baseball. I still enjoy going to Twins games because I can do that - it doesn't matter if they've sucked all season, it doesn't matter if the medical staff seems to be lost, it doesn't matter if the most recent roster move defies understanding. I can suspend all that for a space of a few hours and just enjoy a night at the ballpark.
  24. A couple nights overdue, but welcome nonetheless!
