  1. I had to work today too - had to do a funeral. Then I come back to watch the Twins. I honestly don't know which is more depressing.
  2. What's the only thing worse than tuning in expecting to watch another drubbing by the A's? Having to wait through a rain delay to get to the drubbing.
  3. 6. Think about...the lineup If at the start of the season the odds-makers in Vegas could set the odds for this being the optimal Twins lineup in September, what would they have been - and would anybody have been foolish enough to take that bet...
  4. The most disturbing thing about last night's game is I actually sat through and watched the whole thing. There must be something horribly wrong with me.
  5. Actually, I see it as the same issue. If pitch framing is indeed affecting the outcome of a game, positively or negatively, then that's part of why utilizing technology to assist the umpires to make the correct calls is becoming necessary. A strike should be a strike and a ball should be a ball regardless of a catcher's skill (or lack of skill) in influencing a call.
  6. Won't work. There will be about a half hour of rejoicing and then grumbling will resume over who is picked to replace him, whoever it is. And the last thing a GM should be doing is allowing public sentiment to affect baseball decisions. Letting him go because it is the right move for the team is one thing (and that may indeed be the right thing to do); letting him go for any other reason is a mistake. And I have no clue what the reference to Pravda in this thread means.
  7. That is a matter of perspective. For my view, it is the umpire who is costing him strikes. He's the one making incorrect calls.
  8. Except that the game has changed in 150 years - both the rules and the manner of play have evolved over time. Dead ball era, live ball era, lowering the pitching mound in the 60s, the advent of the DH in the American League, moving to divisions with divisional playoffs in the 60s, interleague play, the development of 5-man rotations, the recent emphasis on advanced metrics - all examples of a game evolving. I would see this as just another evolution. It will change the essence no more than any of these other did.
  9. Reminds me of a quip Reusse made last year during the revolving door rotation we had then - he noted that rookies often have initial success, based simply on the unfamiliarity factor. He jokingly said they should get 162 starting pitchers and have one start each game of the season.
  10. I have great difficulty seeing this as a pitching coach problem. Given that Hendriks has been ineffective from day one, that would mean that our coaching staff managed to corrupt a budding young pitcher in almost record time. A case can perhaps be made that the coaching staff has failed to help Hendriks adjust to a higher level of competition, but that assumes he has the stuff to make it in the first place, which in my mind is by no means certain. This feels like another Slama situation - someone who has great stuff in the minor leagues but, for whatever reason, it just doesn't translate into major league success. This isn't that unusual a story, at this or any other club.
  11. I would imagine you could get results virtually instantaneously - just like you do with radar guns. And none of this would make plate umpires unnecessary - they would still have to rule on whether a batter swung or not, whether it was a foul tip, whether a pitch hit the batter, etc. The technology would simply tell the plate umpire whether the pitch was in the strike zone or not, which is (as this article shows) more subjective now than is probably desirable.
  12. You radical. I would say that a case could be made (and it will no doubt be argued more strenuously by others than I have an interest in doing) that the players played up to what they were capable of, so if the results are still poor it rests on the FO to get better players.
  13. They do actually both count the same in the standings. And I think the point he was making is that competitors want to win, and that drive is just as strong for the weak opponents as for the strong ones.
  14. Understandable. They do kind of all blur together after a while - not unlike Twins games in a losing season.
  15. I'm game - I have to leave the office in a few minutes anyway. Of course I'm busy tonight too. Sucks to miss the first good game they've had in a while.
  16. Yep. and after 2 innings the Sox haven't gotten the ball out of the infield.
  17. As long as we're going movie quotes, here's one that I'm reminded of right now (regarding Danks): "He's worried! You cut him! You hurt him! You see? You see? He's not a machine, he's a man!"
  18. Looks like the team is back from vacation.
  19. Should it scare me that I know that movie just from 4 lines? I definitely need a life.
  20. That inning by Diamond is another that qualifies.
  21. 4. Think about...if a game is played in September by two teams who are already eliminated, and nobody cares about the outcome, does it still count?
  22. I remember this whole debate in tennis a while back - should electronic means be used to determine whether a ball is in or out. They finally put electronic monitoring in place, but the chair umpire retains the right to overrule the machine when he or she chooses. Of course, in practice, those who overrule the machine consistently soon find themselves out of a job...
