  1. Wow! Dozier has really let himself go in the off-season!
  2. I wonder how many people in the franchise - players, coaches, FO types - are watching tonight. Hope it fires their blood for next year.
  3. Think about Life of Brian - the Monty Python classic.
  4. First, a least a couple of our main starters had decent seasons (Correia, Deduno), something that should be recognized. Not stellar, but certainly acceptable, keeping us in the game more often than not and giving us a chance to win. I'll take that from a starter anyday. Second, these are off-the-cuff comments, intended to speak more in generalizations rather than be subject to intense logical scrutiny. The numbers may be imprecise, but the general point, that the bullpen did well in contrast to the rotation, is entirely accurate.
  5. I am not surprised that Gardenhire is back, and I don't think he is the problem, though I probably would side with those who say a fresh voice would be appropriate at this time. That said, one thing this may help is attracting FAs. Gardenhire is well respected around the league and I would think that has to be a plus when trying to sell the club to prospective new players.
  6. This is speculation as to his motivation for staying, and personally I don't buy it. There are plenty of other reasons to stay, including perhaps simply enjoying living in the area, and also perhaps the young talent coming up through the system. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume his strong desire to stay stems from factors other than a desired lack of accountability.
  7. Would you then be in favor of resigning Pelfrey, as the best pitcher we had this year?
  8. This is why I particularly hate WAR in reference to pitching - Baseball-Reference has a completely different stat: Team pitching WAR is 3.8, with Perkins leading at 2.1, and Pelfrey is -0.3. When there is that much difference in the same player (Pelfrey 2.1 vs -0.3) between two different sites, it makes the metric meaningless. There needs to be standard definition of what WAR is.
  9. Nice article, and I thought very realistic, pro and con. And I respectfully disagree with the previous commenter.
  10. They were brutal - I was there and I felt physical pain after the second and third ones. And while Diamond was better, he did start off with three straight hits, including a 2-run homer. Didn't help himself today.
  11. Since I will be at the game, I hope the Twins do win ... and draft standing be darned.
  12. Local history itself shows this is not always the case.
  13. This is one reason some are hesitant to dive heavily into the FA market - you almost always end up paying based on what the player has been, not necessarily what he will be in the future.
  14. #3 Getting prepped for complaining about our off season activity? That's been in full swing since June. And I for one am going to enjoy this last series. Actually I'm not as I'm committed to other plans both Thursday and Friday night, and Saturday I'll be on a plane while the game is on (and I'm too cheap to buy inflight-wifi). But I'll be there Sunday for the last hurrah! One more turkey sandwich and one more minne-apple pie before they close the gates for the year. #5 That's why I've added Growing out to mine - it's a process that's never finished.
  15. Wow, those glasses really do work!
  16. I'm not saying that there are no reasons for fans to be disgruntled, but I find this to be extremely unlikely. You are welcome to disagree with me, but personally I think the case you make is substantially overstated. I'll also add one other personal note: My comment about "no fun" was relative compared to a contending club. Personally, I have enjoyed the Twins season and I'm looking forward to next year. I love baseball, and I love Twins baseball. Just like I love playing golf, even though I suck at it. Even a bad day at the ballpark is better than a day in the office.
  17. I'm curious why you say this. Granted, it might not be fun to watch for a while, but I highly doubt they'll go under.
  18. Won't quibble with much of this. Curious about two things: #6 the new SP - did you have any particular names in mind? #7 was curious why Escobar over Florimon - seem to be about the same offensively but IMO Florimon is a slightly better fielder. #9 what if he signed a relatively team friendly deal? Pelfrey didn't do that bad given he was coming off of injury. Slow start, stable summer, tailed off late. I'd take a chance on him if not too expensive, as he's better than some we have until the young guns are ready.
  19. There seems to be an implicit theme here that Hendriks hasn't been given a fair shot. I would disagree with that. If we want to give him another chance that's fine, but at some point a decision has to be made yes or no, and then we all move on. Same thing applies to Duensing & Swarzak.
  20. Wow, you look a lot like a former Beatle. Don't recognize the old drummer.
  21. To be fair, with the Twins that's a pretty low risk to take.
  22. Yeah, but we did get a couple of hits, so I'll take partial credit.
  23. That's exactly why when I throw a beer at someone I do it before they ask me - and I have a retreat route mapped out so they don't know it's me.
  24. And why should he? I got beaned in a little league game once the one year I played. Someday I'm going to run into him again, then...
  25. OK, let's see if this works: Hey, he's throwing a no-hitter!
