  1. "Exceptions prove the rule"? Kind of makes it hard to dialogue with you. If I can't provide an example, you will say you are right and I am wrong. If I do provide an example, you will say it is the exception that proves you are right and I am wrong. Kind of a rigged game, isn't it? I think I'll follow the advice of the computer on WarGames: "The only winning move is not to play."
  2. Good point - both about San Diego and the value of being seen as a competitive team. I didn't see Houston on that list.
  3. Actually, I think it proves the point exactly. A no-trade clause was something that was more important to him than highest dollar amount. That's exactly what was asked to be shown.
  4. So, somebody posts something that seems to give you exactly what you said you were looking for...evidence that money is not always the deciding factor...and you find a reason to discount it? Kind of makes it hard to take your posts seriously in the future. And for the record, I happen to know corporate execs who have turned down a promotion or transfer or have retired early for those very reasons (family/love/home). Additionally, I myself resigned a position and took a lower paying one for family reasons.
  5. Thanks! I find this interesting. Couldn't help but notice that of the top 8 teams people would take less than the highest offer to play for, 4 are in California (looks like Oakland is left holding the bag), 2 others are in southern climes, and then Red Sox/Yankees, which is self-explanatory. Also find interesting the respect players have for Gardenhire (7th on list of best managers) and Ryan (tied for 2nd with 4 others on list of best GMs). Also liked the question "what player would you take less money to have as a teammate." I hadn't thought of that before.
  6. On a side note, it is possible to follow a playoff run that is Twins-related. Rochester is currently 2 games up on the division title and 2.5 games up on a wildcard. I find myself following their games on Gameday and eagerly looking forward to the scores each night. Rooting for Escobar, Parmelee, Diamond, Walters - it's almost like I'm rooting for the Twins again.
  7. Sarcastic rejoinders don't invalidate my statement. I can just as easily challenge you to prove, and I mean prove and not just assert as a given, that he will go to the highest bidder. And citing the Sano example does not say anything about what Abreu will do. In the language of probability theory, they are independent events, and one can say nothing conclusively about the one by referring to the other.
  8. I remember the 70s and early 80s too. The big excitement then was not the team but the new stadium. And of course there was a lot of grumbling about owners who only cared about money. The more things change...
  9. This. Over the past 18 years, over half of the eventual world series winners ended the regular season with only the 4th best or lower regular season record. Once you get to the playoffs, anything can happen. 1st best record: 3 2nd: 2 3rd: 3 4th: 3 5th: 2 6th: 1 7th: 1 8th: 1 9th: 1 13th: 1
  10. This is the new Twins - small ball back in fashion.
  11. YES! The reverse jinx works.
  12. Bases loaded with one out - this has heartbreak written all over it.
  13. Yeah, a very Pelfry-esque performance today.
  14. Gotta start throwing 1st pitch strikes - 11 for 24 today so far.
  15. And with that pop up, Gibson officially hits 140 innings.
  16. I too am posting from work. Of course, it helps to be the boss.
  17. If that's the case, why are the Twins doing it?
  18. It's called a sacrifice fly - if a ball is caught in play, a runner is allowed to advance at their own risk. Or, was this a sarcastic post?
  19. "Watching" via MLB Gameday, so don't know, but doesn't appear to be a sharp first inning for Gibson even if no damage.
  20. I have no interest in worrying about service time issues, for either team control or arbitration. For me, I choose the conservative route because I think a player needs to show he can compete/succeed at Triple-A before he gets a shot at the majors. The quality of play there is an improvement over Double-A, and if a player can not do well there he has no business being considered for a major league roster. It doesn't have to be a long look - 2-3 months is fine, and if he shows he can handle it, then give him the big test. I know some see the Triple-A level as a parking spot for borderline major league players and see Double-A as the final "proving ground" for major league talent, but if Sano can not succeed facing pitchers who are borderline major league players, he certainly won't succeed against those who truly belong in the major leagues. Let's make sure he's ready before throwing him in the deep end.
  21. I wonder if the Dodgers willingness to part with a prospect of even this level for Butera is a function of their new TV contract - they don't have to be as concerned with building from within, they can just about spend whatever they want in the FA market to fill any holes they see.
  22. I had the Classics Illustrated comic myself.
  23. Uggh! That was ... uninspiring.
  24. Doesn't that kind of defeat the whole purpose of a "vacation"?
