  1. If Justin will make them stronger, then are they willing to actually give up something? Or are they looking for a cheap (or free) rental for a couple of months?
  2. I respectfully disagree. What can play "what if" games ad infinitum with the ubiquitous "replacement level player" to maximize production, and we could add to that enhancing other areas to make up the deficit, but I still believe we should concentrate on maximizing the known quantity, the one who is actually under contract until 2018, first.
  3. I agree. I play golf myself, and to excel requires work. The only way to fake golf is to wait until nobody else is looking.
  4. I think at this point his contract is pretty much irrelevant - it is what it is and is not going to change. I agree that having the primary focus on matching his output to his position is overstated and overrated. For me, have him play the position that's going to maximize his plate appearances. That's the only math I'm caring about.
  5. I don't remember what I said - it was some time ago, and my memory is not what it once was - but I must have learned something. Never done it again.
  6. Concur. I once told a woman she looked good and ask if she had lost weight. Immediately she wanted to know if I had thought she looked fat before. Try to do a good deed...
  7. I think we all should go to Target. /Disclaimer: poster may or may not own stock in said company.
  8. Whew! Anytime we get past Cabrera with no damage I feel the sun shine a little brighter.
  9. So far I like the answer.
  10. I meant it in jest. And of course, the good thing about doing it in a group is if you screw up somebody's life you can always blame the rest of the group members instead of yourself.
  11. I'm sure that most of us here would be happy to sit down with RiverBrian and tell him how he should fix his life.
  12. Is that necessarily a bad thing? It would seem to me a person should be playing at an above average pace at their current level of competition before being considered for a tougher challenge.
  13. Just saying "money is the sticking point" might be misleading. I concur that's part of the story, but perhaps not all of the story. I can easily imagine Ryan getting a call like such: "Say, we'd like to talk about Morneau, but we know he'll only be a rental for a couple of months, and to be honest he's had a tough year even if the last few weeks have been good, so we don't want to give up much for him - how about a couple of low-level C prospects? Oh, and we're going to ask you to eat a lot of his salary too." If I were Ryan, I'd say "NO" as well. Money may well be an issue, but my guess is it is also about what they are being offered in return.
  14. Good point. I hadn't thought of it from that angle.
  15. Thank you sir. This takes the sting out of turning 50.
  16. I know for me it's not color blindness but a genetic disorder that takes away fashion sense.
  17. This is nothing. Wait until September call-ups!
  18. Before we go much further with this, perhaps we should stop and ask ourselves if we are being insensitive to the millions of Americans who are color blind.
  19. Some Slurpees are blue.
  20. Personally I don't see how this year proves anything either way. We already knew he had talent, and we already knew that occasionally he would put it together for a banner year (2006,2010,2013?). The knock on Liriano has always been can he do it consistently (yes, there's that word again:o)? I don't care if he does win the Cy Young this year. Great for him, and as someone who likes rooting for underdogs, I'm happy for Pittsburgh and their fans. Unless he does the same thing next year then nothing in the Liriano story has changed and any comments on coaching staff effectiveness are moot.
  21. Isn't that exactly what the GM is there for? If I'm an owner without a baseball background, I would think the last thing I should be doing is mucking around with baseball decisions, one of which is baseball staffing and personnel moves. My "job" is to hire a good GM to make those decisions and then make the GM accountable to me.
  22. Fair enough. Good points. Especially for the Twins who have nothing else to play for. But if you're in a pennant race, does this still hold? I would want to play my best 25, at least until I've clinched.
  23. I think my question (and it is meant as an honest question) is how much value is there actually in a September callup. Yes, players are getting major league experience, but I wonder if it is not a somewhat diluted experience nonetheless. Other clubs will also be bringing up prospects, so that all the rosters will be somewhat diluted after Sept. 1. Doesn't that make it a little different than facing the "top 25" before 9/1? It kind of reminds me of spring training, where veterans and prospects often play at the same time. That also is valuable experience, but we've all learned to distrust ST numbers because of it. Yes, these games will in some cases have playoff implications, so the intensity will be higher than in spring training, and that also is worthwhile experiencing, and you will face some top-notch hitters/pitchers that you won't see in Triple-A. But has there actually been any studies done on players called up post-9/1 and those not and how it has actually affected their development (or failed to affect it)? For me, the value of these callups is for fans to get a glimpse of the future.
  24. Good point, but I think the comparison is a little problematic, in that rarely does a change in a hitter's swing cause an injury that sidelines a person for months. That said there are also cases where adjustments in pitching motion have led to increased effectiveness; there's a reason all teams have pitching coaches. This whole debate reminds me of golf and the debate over the "perfect" golf swing. Sometimes you have very unconventional swings that yield good results and you should just leave it alone. Sometimes bad mechanics need to be corrected before a golfer can be truly effective. The trick is to know which case is which.
  25. I don't think they have a vacancy right now - Pedro Hernandez was added for his start today and new signee Brad Boyer from the Saints was added to the roster. They'll have to make room for Meyer.
