  1. Have you any link to video evidence to back up your unbridled enthusiasm? It's obvious that his unscrupulous agent believes in him enough to attempt to game the system. The scouting report quoted in Baseball America does give one some caution into assuming he's a Can't-Miss- Infielder-a-Cespedes, but even if he's revealed to be just a good-hit/no-field 2B at the age of 21-22, it seems worth the cost to up the bid to whatever amount it takes to beat out the likes of Billy Beane.
  2. Haddyz, since you've been following him, answer me this. If his arm isn't the injury concern, what's holding him back from making a near-to-complete recovery at only the age of 27 and being more than worth the minimal risk that the Orioles have staked him to?
  3. Uhh, the drop in velocity has only occurred in the last 2 years, his velocity stayed consistently in the 91MPH range in his previous 4 MLB years. and, BTW, despite the velocity drop, his 2011 season was a terrific year for him with a 2.96ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and an ERA+ of 129. On top of that, his loss of velocity apparently isn't an arm-related injury. AAA numbers from a major leaguer, especially when you're hurt and/or rehabbing are indicative of nothing. It seems a little rash to completely write a guy off with only one bad year of performance when Harden inhabits the same roster. I'd say that $1.5M/1 yr. is a very small wager on still-very-young pitcher (turns only 27 next Tuesday), with a much higher chance for hitting a jackpot, than say, the Zumaya deal was in 2012.
  4. It would indeed be ironic if Duqette ends up with both Jurrjens and Saunders in the rotation and effective, with a combined one-year salary less than what Correia is guaranteed for two years. Not a big fan of Saunders except as a #5 and on a year-to-year basis, and you're right Nick, Ryan will never try to win a bidding war, even on a no-brainer situation like this one. And yes, I don't think he's ever read any econ books about The Law of Unintended Consequences. This "woe is me" act is really pathetic and insulting to Twins fans.
  5. With all the money they've saved by not signing legit talent this offseason, why would they be in any sort of holding pattern? Even with monetary sanctions for topping a cap, if this guy is a legit, impact infield prospect, why hold back? It was a slight concern in the Baseball America article that he may not be able to stick at SS. But now that we have the curious situation that he might be up to 2 years younger than claimed, his Cuban numbers look even better. Here's the BA quote: "Age questions and unblocking issues aside, scouting reports on Diaz's talent remain modest. Though Diaz has played shortstop in Cuba, scouts have said he doesn't have the lateral range, quickness or footwork to stay at the position. Diaz has shown some ability with the bat, hitting .315/.404/.500 in 313 plate appearances for Villa Clara " I'd say he's still worth the risk to project at Second Base.
  6. Huh? You ignored actually naming Dozier in your rant. What should have been a front-and-center concern and "fix" from the previous year's debacle with Nishi, slapped them yet again at the key spot on defense, and scrambling for yet 2 more outside placeholders, in-season. And it made no sense having "marginal talent", Parmelee, sitting on the bench for weeks on end at the start of the season, the Twins finally ended up admitting to these failures, in that both choices were ignominiously sent down after their all-too-predictably disastrous debuts trying to jump from AA to the majors. You did admit to the other part of their cluelessness, although you glossed over their actual hope that Doumit could somehow play RF, as an abusrd, make-it-up-on-the-fly Plan B, after they wrongly assumed that Willingham would quietly acquiesce to the spot. And then, they had no spot for Parmelee because he hadn't had reps in the OF. And then, by default, out of favor Revere gets the gig, whose quite accidental showcasing in RF puts him in the nightly mix on ESPN and then even more quite accidentally, puts them in position to make the huge trade with Philadelphia. I'll go with the Twins "don't know what they're doing" over "trust us, we have a plan" all day and every day.
  7. Pressly, Wood and Roenicke have to be depressed. Not only is the likes of Swarzack's below-replacement, -0.2 WAR blocking them, now they are being haunted by the prospect of a wounded, flatballing, overweight "lurker" taking their spot (Capps 2-year WAR is -0.4).
  8. This. Tampa Bay has already played a couple of series at Disney Wide World of Sports. Presumably, that stadium could be readily upgraded to major league standards and/or another stadium built on or near Disneyworld premises.
  9. That's the Rohrschaching part that needs to be avoided or you set yourself up for disappointment. Rather than set expectations, nothing less, than as high as Hunter, I think we all will be well-pleased with a flintier hybrid version of Span and Revere's best traits.
  10. Considering the "competition", this really isn't much of an accolade.
  11. On the same page. As hard as it is to do, I just like to be careful and stay grounded in expectations and try to avoid Rohrschaching our "5-tool" expectations, hope and dreams into "deeming" the next Torii Hunter. I hope he exceeds Hunter's career, let's just not blow his potential by mishandling his call-up, developmentally and financially. For those who find my take as all-too-critical of the FO, this is just one (of many) cases where I applaud their patience. How many of the "experts" were out there, locally and nationally, only one year ago ready to cut the cord with Hicks? The Twins have some other high-talent, slow-adjusting legit prospects, currently enduring the minor league life and playing below lofty projections. Whether slowed by injuries, lack of confidence, etc., give the Twins FO credit for sticking a little longer with those currently laboring, but still possessed with higher-potential talent and/or skill sets. The "suspects" they stick with for far too long, are another story completely.
  12. Last 3 years, the SP ML xFIP is 4.04. Saunders 3-year xFIP is 4.38. Correia's 3-year xFIP is actually a better shade of below-average mediocrity, 4.26. I know you're not saying this, but let's not hold much pretense that Saunders would come in and be the key catalyst in a dramatic Twins turnaround. Although it's a lot like getting a date with Miss Hospitality, it is significantly better having Saunders' innings out there than the alternative. Again, sadly, the biggest benefit to this proposed deal is the one-year nature of it.
  13. Is that where they are? What with their conspicuous lack of rah-rah chatter today, I thought they'd gone to ground, knowing all the "personal insults" they'd have to yet again, endure.
  14. Actually, the definition of insanity is "doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results". Call me crazy, but I come down on the side of Albert Einstein over TR and Panolo on this matter.
  15. No it won't, but it's still just one more area he can work on without the glaring spotlight for 50-100 AAA ABs. Can't hurt him or the Twins in missing him in the lineup for a few games and any weaknesses to address will stay a work in progress in the majors
  16. Puck, you're not implying with the "whole seasoning" thing that the opposing view suggests that the club should wait until September call-up for more "seasoning", just to "be sure"? He made a major hurdle last year, the FO offseason moves indicates that they have confidence that Hicks is on the verge of making the jump to starting CFer. What's wrong with fine-tuning the move fiduciarilly- and hopefully working out some of the aforementioned kinds that Alex mentioned with a brief stint at Roc. and lowering the pressure threshold and spotlight of an opening day start?
  17. All true, but fiduciarially, this is a decision that must be taken with long-term ramifications fully accounted for, and given the repeated proof of the Twins unwillingness to spend freely, Option One is the only way to go.
  18. Doogie has so many "source's" out there, he's bound to get one of them right at some point. If this comes to fruition, it somewhat softens the self-inflicted blow that the Twins have done to themselves, but it's pretty sad that I get sucked into finding any solace whatsover in hoping the trigger gets pulled here. At least it would only be a one-year deal.
  19. Ouch, just read the article, did you mean "fun" in the "laugh in the face of your own adversity" sense? I'm guessing that that's going to leave a nasty butt-hurt mark on the yahoo Twins apologists.
  20. Batting .1000 today, Alex. The Twins showed they really didn't know what they were doing from opening day last year. Anyone remember, the debate about Willingham in RF or LF and Doumit's adventures in outfielding, Parmelee never getting one single inning rep in the OF at AAA?
  21. This. This is not so hard, people.
  22. The kid gloves treatment that has proven to be a good strategy, for an extra 2 week or possibly a little more time, it won't hurt his long-term value to the team, possibly help him and most definitely, the club, financially---- and--- won't make any difference on his short-term value to the team
  23. All of it, so true. And adding Marcum, as well, for even better reasons, would be even a more significant upgrade over the AAAAs. Where are you going here? The Twins have plenty of dollars available, have the worst pitching staff in all of baseball, and we are still(?) worried about 3 filler guys (throw DeVries into the mix, too) who came to, (and will likely leave from), the Twins as probably their last major league stop. From AA on up, there are only, maybe, 3 other guys who end up in mostly remote consideration for a future #5 SP role.
  24. ST is practically predictively meaningless as the "final determinant" for promotion or not.
  25. With that much invested in him, I would think kid gloves would be mandatory.
