  1. Bingo. Let Randy Johnson be the guide on how to handle Meyer for the long-term. It's past time for him to get himself established against major league hitters with the Twins, while his arm and shoulder are still live. Let Kyle Gibson be the guide on how to handle Meyer for the short-term.
  2. You nailed it tobi. And this move laid waste to the gobbledy-gook out of Gardy's mouth only yesterday. While I hope Pino comes out and dominates, if 8 years in AA and AAA without even one sniff at the majors doesn't tell you something about what multiple talent evaluators from 5 different organizations have thought about his chances for major league success, what else will?
  3. Ominous, indeed. Will he be in a corner spot tomorrow night, in favor of Rosario once again in CF? Stay tuned, the drama continues.
  4. Man you nailed it here, H2O. One other dimension worth noting, the Twins pride themselves on picking up multiple AAAA or way-out-of-favor/unknown players, and then offering them probably their only realistic hope of securing a full-time major league job should they somehow miraculously take advantage of their opportunity. Giving the chance of a lifetime to the likes of Colabello, Albers and Pino helps them stock their high minors with willing signees, and make for great short-term feel-good media stories.....but obviously, this works at cross-purposes to a club that is supposedly rebuilding themselves by bringing up, and breaking in properly, their most-talented younger prospects in the hopes of making the move to "Why not us?" contender.
  5. Actually, you are incorrect. KC's salary drive in 2012 while still with Pirates worked out quite well for Correia. From 7-26 through 10-2 of 2012, in his last 12 games, Correia put up an ERA of 3.71, with a FIP @ 3.52, while increasing his K/9 by nearly a full strike out and K% by over 3%. It certainly was an impressive enough string of performances to convince Terry Ryan to take a flyer on him- hence Terry's famous defense when he signed Correia- "better than his numbers indicate."
  6. Definitely would have been nice to have had him from the season opener. Still don't understand that move if they were in win-now mode.
  7. Maybe reading too much into the move to New Britain, but perhaps the braintrust sees an opportunity here for Hicks to make a brief return to the place where he had his last big success in 2012....to find that success again quickly and then quickly reignite his big league career?
  8. This just in, per Berardino http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/06/17/twinsights-journeyman-yohan-pino-gets-the-call-to-start-thursday/: What happened to all of that DaVinci Code stuff yesterday, Gardy? I know this decision wasn't yours to make in the end, but isn't "only one way to find out" just as operative, if not more so, for your very best prospects?
  9. I think you're right, but he sure seems to have driven the braintrust crazy with all that has gone down this season. I must admit I was a bit surprised that New Britain was his first assignment. Is the move to New Britain for Hicks sending a message to him to get his act together....right now!? But then, Sam Fuld also rehabbed in New Britain, so maybe Gene Glynn is happy with what he has in the OF in Rochester and preferred not messing with his current rotation while in a pennant race. Whatever the case, the curious case of "AAron" Hicks takes yet another interesting new turn.
  10. Yup, sure did. It will be interesting to see what interest remains for his services...and if he's willing to do what Kubel wasn't.
  11. Mike Berardino @MikeBerardino · 43m Hicks to start rehab at New Britain Wednesday Maybe it means nothing, maybe it means everything. But it sure seems to have implications for the Rochester Red Wings, who are currently tied for 1st place in their division in the IL pennant hunt- and apparently Hicks isn't needed, even though the Wings are without a legitimate CF on the roster. Meanwhile, New Britian is not in a pennant hunt, but they do have another guy that could very well project as a late-season major league promotion in the same position as Hicks, Eddie Rosario. Is Rosario moving up (seems too soon for that)? Or is Hicks just with the Rock Cats to work on his timing and shoulder a bit....before a promotion to....wait a minute....a promotion to Rochester? Or back to Minnesota?
  12. Given that Pino is the latest winner in the "AAA SP lottery...w/ all expense paid short-term tryout trip to the majors', was it Pino's "veteraniness" that tilted the decision this time? We all know Gardy's preferences for vets.
  13. Oh, he's going to be kept around, still trying a turn:
  14. Gardy in last night's presser expressed his profound love for Burt-ie...there's no way he's done yet...injury creativity has worked for the Twins this year at least twice (Bartlett and Pelfrey)....why not a third time?
  15. Good for Yohan. But unfortunately, SOP for the Twins, shake all of the trees in the forest, first trying out Darnell, then Johnson......every possible option except the most obvious ones.
  16. The whole pitch count thing/inning limitation thing for Meyer and the apparent surplus of starting arms makes me hope that Gardy is granted his Spring Training wish and Meyer is brought up to throw some set-up innings in the pen- they just have to find him room on the roster.
  17. They could have Deduno take over one of the pen slots and option someone out temporarily (Thielbar?). But Parmelee and Nunez moves seem just as likely.
  18. Assuming someone (Darnell) gets called up only for a guest start with the Twins, now that Gilmartin is with Rochester, the Wings have those 6 guys, plus Diamond can go back into the rotation at any time as the 7th starting option.
  19. It's amazing how the prospect of legitimate competition for your starting spot, plus being in a contract year, can focus the mind. KC is clearly a different pitcher of late.
  20. Correction- Swarzak's FIP is 3.85. But.....his ERA is 4.68, his xFIP is 5.32, his SIERA is 4.98...and most significantly, his K% and BB% have fallen through the floor and gone through the roof, respectively. All of this to say, that Swarzak is actually looking like he's really not very useful, and very expendable and easily replaceable at this point.
  21. Optimistically, before the season started, I predicted the Twins had made just enough upgrades and had enough help on the way to improve to the point of winning somewhere in the range of 70-74 wins- but still a bat and a starting pitcher short of becoming a fringe contender. Even though they now have the bat, and even though the vibe and character on this team for competing has definitely changed versus the last 3 years, I'm regrettably sticking with my prediction (perhaps now at the higher end of that range), until and unless the Twins prove they get a real shot in the arm from the pitching call-ups and/or another outside player deal.
  22. Just in reading the postgame tea leaves, when a reporter was fishing for compliments for Thielbar for striking out the side last night (sandwiches around some control issues and hittability), Gardy didn't offer any sign of recognition for Thielber for "getting after it" or "battiling his tail off", while he made certain to praise Burton for his effort (as rare as it has come this season). But the Twins do need another lefty in the pen.
  23. Gotta think so, although on the broadcast of Berrios' last Miracle game, the thought from the announcer was that management supposedly would keep Jose with the Miracle in a possible first-half pennant-clinching situation (First half ends on Wednesday) at the very least, before he would move up to New Britain.
