  1. Are you making the assumption that Arcia isn't going to work out in LF?... because the last word from management is that the 39 year old is going to start out the season in Right, plus management had Arcia move to LF in VE Winter Ball in anticipation.
  2. Cabrera wants a one-year deal, you might be able to buy low here, and possibly even flip at the deadline. You won't be flipping Quentin for much.
  3. Can you really discount the possible overall upgrade from DHing Arcia full-time with a standout defensive/offensive OF? (Klaw hates Vargas, even as he continues to improve upon the areas in which he's criticized him.)
  4. Yup. For better or worse, Ryan is most likely stuck with Ricky and his contract for quite a bit longer- perhaps half of the remaining contract.
  5. Has anyone given thought that he was looking for this type of situation... and never again wants to endure the shellshock of ever playing again in a major media market meatgrinder?
  6. Did you mean Seth Smith? That's who I'd demand... Actually, there are three teams with a huge surplus in the OF... (add Dodgers and Red Sox). It's a worth a call to each, and making a lowball offer on each OF with the best combinations of offense and defense.
  7. Nolasco was flipped on an expiring contract in 2013, arguably his 2nd best year, statistically. And the Marlins still had to eat part of the contract- to the Phat Dodgers....- and really got nothing back in terms of prospects (Miguel Sulbaran is a better looking prospect than what the Marlins got for Nolasco). The Twins are on the hook for 3 years, hard to see a mid-season flip for Nolasco in 2015 with that much time left on the contract. Perhaps they could do a better deal next offseason after a 2013-like, 2015, but really don't see much coming back in return- probably closer to a dump than a flip. The best case scenario to me would be the exchange of comparably bad contracts for need.
  8. "Flipped" to me implies proactively going in a different direction and extracting some value in the process. In Nolasco's case, another year like 2014, he'll end up more like dumped or exiled than flipped.
  9. They may be flippable, but you have to have a willing :flipper" at the helm, the Twins don't have one of those.
  10. Twins Caribbean staff searched far and wide for an available LHRP (who just happened to be playing on the same winter ball team as Pinto and Escobar).
  11. After this big announcement and the Twins disclosing what they think of Hughes and their intentions, long-term... we now know four more things (at least). 1) Hughes isn't going to be shopped at this year's trading deadline. 2) With three prospects knocking on the major league door, at least two of the current top four SPs are going to be shopped between now and mid-year, 2016. Hughes isn't going to be one of them. (Gibson and Nolasco probably shouldn't put down any serious roots in the community). 3) The Twins continued the staggering of the annual expiration of one of their SP contracts, now out to 2019. 4) From May, Meyer and Berrios, possibly only one could still be around by the end of Hughes' contract.
  12. If the Twins were to add a quality OFer, Vargas might not even have the chance to make the team out of ST- they might be tempted just to do the DHing by committee and let Vargas play 1B full-time in Roc. To me, just as big a question mark as Vargas is to stick on the team all season, is Arcia's ability to play a less than horrendous LF all season. Going back to Vargas's alleged bad second month with the Twins, those concerns are overstated, consider the following... and note the areas where he actually improved in September: Aug: BB% 3.1 K% 27.5 ISO .154 BABIP .400 PA 139 HR 4 XBH 11 Sep: BB% 7.8 K% 26.2 ISO .208 BABIP .258 PA 103 HR 5 XBH 9
  13. In pre-season-2011, neither Dozier nor Plouffe were in the Top 20 by Hulet, Sickels or Mayo (Sickels had Plouffe and Dozier as "ones to watch". Dozier moved up in 2012 to the #10 spot, but only from Sickels' list. Vargas moved up to #16 in 2014 pre-season, but again, only from Sickels (who was the only one that mentioned Vargas as "one to watch" previously). KLaw publicly ridiculed Vargas's play in the Futures Game last July, despite the fact that it was quite obvious that Vargas had acquitted himself quite nicely among the very best prospects in all of baseball. Sickels seems to be someone to pay attention to.
  14. That's awfully close, Chief. Is that your preference or what you expect to happen (or both)?
  15. At this point, you and Paul Molitor have a fundamental disagreement. To get Esco his reps, would they ticket Vargas to Rochester, and play Esco at 2nd, 3rd, SS and LF 5-6 times a week (and give Plouffe, Arcia and Dozier some DH PAs)?
  16. Yep.. I've been waiting for just this type of move, but thinking there must be an ex-Twins OF being coaxed out of retirement. Does anyone know if Andy Dirks is healthy? Seems like he'd be a good fit if he's recovered from his back surgery.
  17. If Molitor is open enough with the numbers, and unafraid of bruised egos in the #3 spot... this will likely be the opening day order... except they might be intent on keeping with the L/R thing with Arcia and Plouffe... and Hicksie at the bottom of the order.
  18. Reposted- Q is actually a great guy, Chicagoland native- I remember he was the charismatc, completely bald (when it wasn't cool) point guard on a very talented high school team that went to the IL state championships, and a real fiery, over-achieving type (overcoming severe alopecia) who's had quite a bit of minor league success, besides his stint with the Cubs.

  20. Thanks, JB... ask and you shall receive. That whole article about Dougie's hemming and hawing was apparently a skosh overblown. Can you now find out who's the guy in Rochester?
  21. That's the key, winning in the minors may mean something in regards to keeping it real with the affiliates, but it means little to next to nothing if the players aren't ready to play in the majors when called upon- and that rampant lack of readiness to play "Twins Way" ball has been on display for many years now.
  22. Barring a complete ST collapse, this scenario is spot on.
  23. So Smith stays because he's from the area and publicly requested the reassignment, which Brad Steil was apparently happy to oblige, despite the just-as-public concerns about if he's the right man for the job. Soo... meanwhile,..the 500 Lb gorilla is still in the room... when's the news on Dougie, stay or go...coming out... before, or after the Holidays?
  24. My post was not so much a qualitative judgement on Santana, as more a confirmation that Ryan does have a "broader vision" that he's trying to implement. There's really no reason that becoming our second best pitcher and fulfilling the other parts of the transaction Ryan is seeking should be mutually exclusive (there's a fighting chance that Torii Hunter will be our best outfielder in 2015).
  25. This was a good post, but I'm not sure about the last sentence. According to Ryan's (and presumably Pohald's) broader vision, signing Santana looks to be just a carryover of unfinished business from last offseason..... ie, some more "Stop-the-bleeding," innings-eating, veteran leadership for the young arms that will be (very) gradually working their way into the rotation, as well as a veteran leadership figure in the OF for all of the young colts already here or soon arriving on the scene.
