I knew you'd jump on that one! No one saying it's the key to success, but we want a long-term contender. Best way to do that is to manage your roster in a smart, economic fashion... even when that means you have to wait a whole, painful, non-season changing 3 weeks to see a prospect that hasn't proven anything.

That's a fair point. I agree that Gibby will probably need some time to adjust, but I don't personally see a few weeks as a career changer for him or our current season. I know a lot of folks hate the money angle, but when you have a few guys that aren't completely underdeserving of a chance and we're talking about the possibility of a few millions of dollars down the road... it makes the argument to call him up that much harder. With you on Slama though, brother. Might be too late.
  3. I don't think anyone is blaming Doumit for Worley's failures, just another opportunity to point out his deficiencies. Well if he's not very good at being a catcher, as in one of the worst in MLB, I don't know that I'd want him as anything more than a bench bat. As Mike pointed out, he hasn't been contibuting enough with the bat to be our regular DH.
  4. Brock, have to be very careful with assigning all BABIP variations to luck. We're still dealing with SSS here and, as you alluded to when pointing out the LD%, BABIP doesn't catch how hard a pitcher is getting crushed. I'd have a .700 BABIP, but it wouldn't be because I'm unlucky. You keep on pointing out his FIP also, but some glimmer of hope can be expected there given that Worley hasn't walked a ton of guys and his HR rate hasn't been terrible (which you could very possibly call lucky). I don't think either one capture how poorly he has truly pitched.

Wouldn't that just about be the definition of 'flashed talent'? I guess I tend to take a bit of a longer view and don't see this as a terrible thing. These guys didn't embarrass themselves last year... Walters started well, but tailed off when it turned out he was injured. Their numbers basically match Gibson's this year and it's a last chance for both of them. They most likely won't stick, but there's at least a chance and this organization desparately needs SP for the long haul. I don't think many of us here thought we'd win 90 games this year. So why not? What's the big deal now? Because we were .500 after a month or so? If Deduno or Walters stink, we'll see Gibson. If one of them gives up a 6.00 ERA for 4 starts before that happens and we assume Gibson would have been a 4.00, we're talking like a 4-5 run difference total. Hard to picture that costing us the playoff run that none of us envisioned in the first place...
  6. Yes. By 2016, I'm confident our homegrown talent base will be more than capable of overcoming Gardy's "old-school" ways and TR's debatable free agent acquisitions. On the subject of the post, I tend to have more confidence in TR than Gardy for some reason.

Both very understandable points. Let's hope for the best here and then we can jump for joy when the Twins found a diamond in the rough. Otherwise, we'll see Gibson shortly anyway... although I think we will either way.
  8. As much as I love a Minnesota kid, I have to hope it's De Vries or else Hermsen. An occasional lefty can make minimal velocity work, but the odds are just that much lower for righties.

Guys, a couple starts by Walters instead of Gibson is not going to be the ruin of the season. Their numbers are remarkably similar at AAA. It's not like Gibson has been blowing every batter out of the water and they are calling up guys he's been putting to shame. Both Walters and Deduno are out of options and you wouldn't expect them to be on long leashes. Rolling the dice right now on a couple of guys who have flashed talent but just haven't stuck for whatever reason is not a horrible option for a team that drastically needs a better rotation not just today, but for a long time to come.
  10. Even if we do lose a fringe player from the current 40-man, the impact is highly likely to be zero. Kyle Gibson is just about the only reason to not do this. I think this is the right time to do this though. With a rotation of Diamond, Correia, Pelfrey, Deduno, and Walters... it's about impossible to think that Gibson won't have the opportunity to step in for one of them shortly. He's clearly next in line with only Albers as any other reasonable consideration. I just hope we don't see a ton of overreactions to this move.
  11. I wanted to bring this back to life because Doumit is getting ripped for framing again in the recent FG article on Worley's struggles (not as a cause, but pointed out): Vance Worley and Losing the Magic | FanGraphs Baseball Also, this Grantland article points out some very clear mechanical differences between a guy like Doumit (bad at this) and a Molina (good at this): Studying the art of pitch framing by catchers such as Francisco Cervelli, Chris Stewart, Jose Molina, and others - Grantland We can debate the net effect of framing, but I think most here have acknolwedged it's at least worth something. That something at the wrong time will inevitably cost us a win at some point. What really bothers me here is that we haven't seen any improvement. If there are clear mechnical indicators of a better framer -- steady body, no head dip, catch and return to set instead of catch and follow through -- why wouldn't this be something the Twins coach Doumit on? You see the same things every time he catches... It makes me feel like, again, the Twins just aren't out on the front edge of recognizing the value in these kinds of things. Either that or stubborn ol' Gardy doesn't want to actually coach one of his veterans, which would be almost equally as bad. Any thoughts? Or am I overreacting?
  12. Awesome post. Seriously. You go off the deep end sometimes, but can at least usually see it for exactly that.
  13. There's a lot more to the game than being able to hit the ball very far. When should he have been in AA? To start the year? A few weeks ago? If he gets promoted mid-season, we're talking about the difference of a month or two. I guess I just don't see a big impact either way. The Twins do have a prospect in low-A ball that has shown to be very well rounded in his first full season. He's an excellent option and example of a player that can move fast if he continues to succeed. I wouldn't be shocked to see him catch (or even beat) Sano on the path to MLB.
  14. Rushing him would be advancing him to levels that he's not ready for. His power might be MLB ready, but the rest of his game needs to develop. Brad has already highlighted the ways that Machado was more advanced and where Sano needs to improve.
  15. Sorry, I meant 'like' fest. Those little hearts next to where it says "___ likes this" get confusing!
  16. Apologies, again. Resume the two-man love fest.
  17. Hard to disagree with that. We'll have to see how he does. I have a hard time envisioning him being much worse in the outfield than Ryan Doumit or Josh Willingham though...
  18. Painful/funny part is, that's exactly how you're supposed to be able to describe those current suspects with all those sinkers and groundballs... but that sure hasn't turned out so well.
  19. Lol... well, it kind of started with Cap'ns point about strategy and the type of guys we've drafted and evolved into who runs the drafts with your response... but I digress! So, yes -- TR doesn't run the draft or even really influence the selection decisions, but has to be largely responsible for (at least approving) the change in strategy to draft more power arms overall. See, we all win.
  20. If one of the top 3 are still there, then the decision on what to do becomes pretty easy and this entire debate is moot... However, I do tend to think that Stewart might be the choice anyway who is going to want every bit of the pool to sign.
  21. We're debating whether TR 'gets' the need for power arms or not. He's clearly saying that he doesn't make the actual choices during the draft because the scouts have more knowledge on that year's specific players. But whether it's Berrios, Melotakis, etc that are in the system or some other power arms... the specific players are kind of irrelevant. It's clear from the recent drafts that they've changed their strategy and we'd be remiss to think the GM isn't responsible for setting the strategy for the scouting/drafting team to execute. That strategy clearly reflects an effort to draft more power arms. So, yes, the facts have bearing (despite the sarcasm) and the point remains... TR gets it.
  22. Reverse that. Parmelee has proven he can dominate AAA. It's time to give him his extended chance to get results at the MLB level. Some time in AAA isn't going to hurt Arcia and can help in the long run.
  23. Haha... maybe you're getting draft and acquisitions mixed up? Bottom line is the Twins have certainly made changes throughout the organization recently, as was pointed out, and they have also made some clear changes to their draft approach. I think we'll care a lot more about who is responsible for that if the wave of upcoming prospects don't pan out and we're subjected to more 90+ loss seasons. In that case, the buck always stops at the top... TR.
  24. I'm with you, John. This is exactly the point I was trying to make in the thread about who we'd be disappointed with at #4. If they value a band of talent equally, which is quite possible given this board, then they should make the best economic decision to support the possibility of getting additional talent later. If the value someone higher or if one of the top 3 drop (Grey, Appel, Bryant), then they should certainly take the BPA.
  25. I can't wait either. That's exactly the fun of it.... you never know!
