  1. That's an ugly chart, but why does Pelfrey only get a sample size of this year vs LHH and the other two get samples since '07 vs both RHH and LHH?
  2. That's pretty fair and maybe it is time, but all the outrage, conspiracy theories, etc are a bit out of place (...then I remember we're on an internet forum). I'll be pretty concerned if he doesn't pitch for the Twins this year, but we're not there. I get that no one is a fan of our rotation, but... Deduno and Walters haven't done anything (yet) to deserve being removed and Correia has been a surprise. They signed Pelfrey KNOWING he would need to work through coming back from TJ and he's gotten better every month (April - 7.66, May - 5.90, June - 4.05), so I can't picture them pulling the plug just yet. Diamond has struggled, but he's working back from injury and was far and away our best pitcher last year. Can't see them yanking him yet either. Personally, I'm willing to sit tight for a few weeks. I'd like to see Gibson here no later than the trade deadline. All this talk on the innings limit is still vague and we don't know exactly what the plan is, regardless if some folks here want to claim that we do.
  3. We don't know what his inning limit is. If we are assuming that TR and crew don't plan to get him some MLB time before he reaches that limit, then either we can't see past our noses or there is truly zero faith in the FO.
  4. Why does it seem like the assumption is that Gibson won't pitch at all for the Twins this year? The main argument for bringing him up this very second is to get him MLB experience. The Super-2 deadline passed within the last couple of DAYS. Every last registered poster here would be shocked if he doesn't see MLB time this year. He'll be here. Soon. He'll get his MLB experience this year. We seem to get really worked up and lose focus over a matter of weeks or 2 months at worse. I have to side with Oxtung here. This isn't an issue. If he's still pitching well and we're in September, I'll be with the rest of you... pitchforks and all.
  5. You're absolutely right, just trying to address one of the main counterpoints I've heard as to why it won't work. Maybe it'd just be more of a mindset that I'm going to get up, warm up as soon as I can, and go in to face guys on base. Maybe the role would need a stat name to really catch on? I nominate a 'stop' and the pitcher is called the 'stopper'. Pretty catchy, eh? To qualify for a stop, the pitcher has to enter the game in the 6th inning or later with a batter at the plate that can either tie the score or take the lead and he must finish the inning with the lead intact.
  6. I was wondering the same. He's more or less Wimmers minus TJ and a few years younger. I'd at least put him in that #15 range.
  7. Great points by mike and everyone else. I'd agree completely that the rigid approach is what irks me as well. I wonder if bullpens could evolve to have a role that is centered on coming in the game for high leverage situations with guys on base. The 'old school' line of thought delineates clear roles, so why can't we compromise and have that be one? It'd be someone who can warm up quickly, high GB% and K%, and has shown they can 'handle the stress'. I'd pay more for that guy than someone who has gotten the illustrious save stat many times.
  8. I tend to usually look away when I see 'Article By: Jim Souhan', but this most recent piece features noted sabermetrician and current Twins closer Glen Perkins discussing bullpen roles: Souhan: Perkins relieved to be in Twins' bullpen | StarTribune.com ‘‘If I were a manager, I would probably construct my bullpen in the same way we have ours constructed, because I know we can’t do what sabermetricians want us to do,’’ Perkins said. “We just can’t.’’ ‘‘You have to get all the outs and the easiest way to do that is to say, ‘You’re pitching here and you’re pitching here,’ because we’re creatures of habit." I've always been a huge supporter of the view to use your best reliever(s) in the most crucial situations. I'd be curious to see how the article or Glen's response would be different if it wasn't Souhan, but this at least makes me question the line of thought and certainly serves as a reminder that baseball players have feelings too despite the fact that sometimes we expect them to perform like machines.
  9. #freeslama Good luck, Anthony.
  10. Shane, we're going to hold you to this in a month when Clete is still batting .180/.200/.340 with 40% Ks!
  11. With the Super-2 deadline behind us now, I almost expect both the AL and NL ROY to end up being call-ups from around this time. Like mentioned in the original post, none of the rookies that started on a ML roster this year really took off.
  12. Prospect lists have to balance ceiling with certainty and each ranking takes them into account differently. Guys like Sickels value certainty while rankings from someone like KLaw value ceiling. This list would tend to be a little closer to the latter. Nothing wrong with that. It'll be interesting to see where Stewart ends up on the national lists this off-season.
  13. Good point. Definitely would need more. Bailey was entering his first year of arbitration when he was traded with three years of control remaining. He's making just over $4M this year and now has one year of arbitration left before free agency after '14. Perkins is making $2.5M this year with a contract in place for '14 + '15 at $3.75M and the '16 option for $4.5M. If moved this summer, that's an extra half year of control AND lower salaries. All that said, no, I don't think they should trade Perkins unless it's a 'cant-turn-that-down' situation. Elite relief pitchers (especially with a closer track record) aren't readily available at that price and we expect to contend before his current contract is up.
  14. I'm onboard with this. A taste in Sept if he does well in AA between now and then. AAA to start '14 with the call up in June if he does well, otherwise Sept.
  15. I don't mind Clete given our situation. Once Plouffe is back, our option for the last bench spot has to be at least passable in CF. Unfortunately, Clete is about the only option unless we want to risk riling up the masses here by dropping another marginal player off the 40-man and risk the claim to add... Antoan Richardson?
  16. Thanks for the condescending reply. The actual original article from the thread focused on more plate appearances for the #2 hitter, but you can insinuate that I am incapable of understanding your post or prefer to disregard anything counter to a point I make all that you want. If your viewpoint is that Mauer wouldn't have batted anyway because Dozier would have gotten out earlier either way, we can start speculating on how history could have been rewritten all over the place. Maybe a different pitcher would have come in for a matchup? Maybe the approach would have been different? Maybe Florimon would have tried to sac bunt? Doumit wouldn't have batted to lead off the inning, nor have struck out, so maybe there wouldn't have been 2 outs? Maybe something would have happened differently earlier in the game that would have changed who was up to bat? You can't just move an outcome from one spot to another without opening the door to how everything else would have played out differently. Simply based on what happened at the very end and not trying to predict how things would have been different otherwise from the infinite number of variations and possibilities, Mauer would have batted if he was #2. Cheers.
  17. Nice article, Chris. I'd have to agree that he's overtaken Sano, but only by a slight margin. Safe to say we're all pretty excited to see the both of them arrive in Minneapolis.
  18. Aaron Gleeman?
  19. Please, just take it at surface level as a simple example. If you want to start playing with revisionist history, you can start making 'seemingly important points' about how any given situation could have possibly been different... to the point where you can make absolutely no insights at all. The outcome and specifics aren't as important as the fact that Mauer batting 3rd led to 1 less at bat for him. With that likely to happen about once every 9 games, I'd call that a bad thing given our other options to bat 2nd.
  20. After another brief MLB stint, Chris was again optioned back to Rochester. Seth named him his 'May Hitter of the Month' with the following write-up: Rochester Red Wings 1B Chris Colabello (34-80) .425/.489/.800 (1.289) with 12 doubles, no triples, six home runs and 20 RBI. I struggled with this a bit. Colabello didn’t even play in a minor league game in May after May 21. Should I give him the #1 spot for the month? Should I factor in his 2-15 performance with the Twins? Does he have enough at bats to “qualify” for this ‘award’? Well, he’s got plenty of at bats, and his numbers are incredible. Didn’t play in the last 9-10 Red Wings games of the month and still accounted for 18 extra base hits. Also, his story is remarkable, and for it to culminate with his first big league promotion at the age of 29 after seven years in independent ball, it just adds to the reasoning. Look again at the month he had and remember that he had a very strong April. There is no reason to believe that Colabello can’t be a big league role player. We do know that he can mash AAA pitching, something he’ll be doing again here in June.
  21. This exact situation was manifested last night. Bottom of the 8th, bases loaded, 2 outs. Brian Dozier up to bat as the #2 hitter instead of Joe Mauer. Dozier flies out on a flare to right, Mauer doesn't bat again. Thankfully the Twins hung on to win and I'll concede that lineup construction does generally get blown out of proportion, but we can't pretend like these little things don't matter at all.
  22. Good read, indeed. Direct link to the article: Twins on way back with future stars, flourishing farm system - CBSSports.com
  23. After 2 starts (1 RF, 1 DH), Chris was temporarily optioned back to AAA. With Trevor Plouffe going on the 15-day DL, he was quickly recalled without playing a game for Rochester. Chris will look to improve upon his current 1 for 11 MLB line as an option for 1B, DH, RF, and emergency 3B.
  24. Right. It's just unfortunate we're talking about the radio play-by-play guy and not someone who actually influences the roster or game play.
  25. I just threw up in my mouth a little. So true...
