  1. Very true. I wanted to do the same breakdown for 2B, but I ran out of energy/interest. However, of the 10 shortstops on MLB.com's list, 3 have questions about moving to 3B and 3 more have questions about moving to 2B. That said, you can't get a SS if you don't at least sign guys that have a chance to stick there (we all knew Miguel Sano wasn't going to be a SS) and, like you said, the Int'l market is a great place to start. Separately, I'm not sold on the idea that the Twins need to or could trade away some of their pool. If we're trading away an MLB player, it would seem to me we could just as well get part of someone else's pool and try to grab a few high-end Int'l guys before the rules change.
  2. Some evidence to support. MLB.com Top 10 SS Prospects: 5 - Int'l 5 - HS (3 from Puerto Rico) 0 - College 2013 MLB Top-10 WAR Leaders, SS: 6 - Int'l 2 - HS 2 - College
  3. A .939 OPS in the FSL is pretty darn good. Good enough for 4th in the league behind only some guy named Sano and two other guys. I'm hoping he moves up to AA within the next few weeks since there isn't anything but filler there now. It'd free up a spot at H-A for Dalton Hicks (5th in Midwest league in OPS) and 6' 10" Aussie Rory Rhodes can move up from E-Town.
  4. I don't think every use of sarcasm is considered trolling, but I went ahead and edited my post anyway. Seeing that reaction from so many folks would seem to be pretty telling though. I think it's been bottled-up and the dam broke, so to speak.
  5. Fair enough, but I think the evidence still strongly supports that the Twins are moving these guys quickly even in comparison to other elite prospects. An incredibly small sample of a few guys making it maybe a year earlier doesn't prove otherwise. The best of the best prospects seem to make it before or at 22. If Sano comes up next year after let's say the Super 2 deadline, he'll be barely 21. I could also see Buxton up next year for a September call up where he'll still be 20.
  6. Given that Pelfrey was DL'ed and Hernandez was in his spot (and now Gibson), they're still playing with a 25-man roster. They missed the opportunity to essentially make it a 26-man until the next start was needed. They very well could have done this and I'd actually have liked to see Colabello up for the week, but then you could make the argument they should do that with every fringe starter after each start who is in an option year.
  7. I hereby nominate this post for the #1 position on the TD Wall of Fame.
  8. I know you have a few examples that you like to highlight, but it's hard to make the case that the Twins aren't fast tracking these guys. The Top 10 Youngest Players In Each League On Opening Day - BaseballAmerica.com Oswaldo Arcia - Started year as 6th youngest in Int'l League. Now in MLB. High-end prospects like Trevor Bauer and Wil Myers were both older in AAA. Miguel Sano - Started year as youngest in FSL. Now in AA. High-end prospects like Gary Sanchez (NYY) and Javier Baez were both older in H-A and are still there. Practically right on track with Oscar Taveras' timeline. Byron Buxton - Now in H-A. Wasn't top 10 youngest in Midwest, but started at same level as #1 pick from his draft class. High-end prospects Carlos Correa and Dorssys Paulino are still there. Francisco Lindor (top-15 prospect) is still in L-A. Would be youngest in H-A as of this list. There is nothing to show that Buxton and Sano won't arrive along the same timeline as a guy like Mike Trout. Harper and Machado are essentially the only two examples of younger guys, compared to the overwhelming vast majority that come along older even if we just look at similarly elite prospects.
  9. And I actually agree with you. I guess we just differ on the reaction that causes. With Gibson, if we're talking a month, like 5 starts? The Twins FO obviously had their reasons to keep him in AAA, with Super 2 being a pretty justifiable rationale in my mind (granted, not so for some folks here) that every MLB team considers. When we're talking the matter of a month, I can't fathom that being a real factor in the long run and I guess I'm willing to give the FO at least that much leeway without ripping them to shreds over it. Same story with the others that have been hot topics around here.
  10. Congrats to Byron on the much deserved promotion! Bummed I couldn't get to CR in time this year to see him...
  11. The Twins obviously had their rationale for not calling him up earlier. The Super 2 deadline just definitively passed in the last week (two at most). Kyle strung together a number of nice showings. And look..... he got promoted. Some folks here are constantly caught up in wanting instantaneous action of whatever their whim might be. Gibson was a great example. Earlier, Sano. Recently, Buxton. And look... all three are promoted. It's a recurring theme that the big picture gets ignored and a lot of keystrokes are spent hashing out the difference between today and next week. In baseball, that's practically a microcosm. I (wishfully) hope these three examples can help folks step back and maybe relax a little with the understanding that the FO isn't actually full of complete idiots.
  12. Good stuff. I've seen SIERA, but hadn't read up on all the details. It shouldn't come as a surprise that SIERA almost universally likes the Twins starters less than tERA and xFIP.
  13. Not trying to be snarky here at all, where have you seen this? I'd be interested to read it.
  14. I think I'd agree with that. ERA tells us exactly what happened. FIP tells us what more likely should have happened if all those other guys on the field performed at league average and is certainly a better indicator of the pitcher's talent than ERA.
  15. Thank you for this piece. I've been blasted by a few folks here who take every quip as the ultimate truth (even if there is contradicting evidence) while trying to make that point: "One thing it would remind us of is how easy supposition can become “fact” through the process of repetition." Really hoping we see Gibson come up for Walters. Not defending it and I hope not, but I could see them give PJ one more start since that was his first real clunker (I know he wasn't great in 2 other starts as well).
  16. I thought he'd be promoted after the Midwest ASG. However, I don't think any of us foresee Buxton making it to AA this year. Best case, he starts next year there. If that's true, does it really matter whether he goes to Ft Myers last week, this week, or even a few weeks from now? Simply, IMO, no. Nothing shows the Twins plan to keep him there all year, even though other elite prospects have done that (Mauer, Sano) and survived just fine. If multiple sources from the Twins say he's "close", it would seem likely the promotion will happen soon.
  17. If you're getting into following the whole farm, I'd highly recommend this great resource: Minnesota Twins Prospect Handbook 2013 by Seth Stohs (Paperback) - Lulu
  18. I can see that possibility, but I'm not ready to make that determination yet. It will depend largely on other trades and the value exchanged. With 2 wild cards for the first time, the hypothetical is that there'd be more buyers.
  19. Yes! This is something other franchises have successfully done and there shouldn't be any financial reasons why they can't. Yes! With impact talent on the way, some guys closer to the bigs would be nice. Flawless AA-AAA impact talent isn't realistic, but we might have a chance to grab someone like this.
  20. I'd certainly expect something in this range for a guy like Willingham. We were debating whether he was worth a top 100 prospect in the offseason and after his expected regression he's now only worth a mid-level prospect? I don't think a guy like Trevor May would be unreasonable. Proven power bats on reasonable contracts don't grow on trees. I don't want to see Plouffe traded either. We can talk about Romero, but that's a big leap to take. Plouffe is still trying to establish whether or not he can handle 3B and whether his bat is for real. Trading him now would seem to be pulling the plug too early since we've already come this far.
  21. Ha, I'd have to agree with every portion of your post! I get why folks are frustrated (our team has sucked for 2 years, going on 3), but we have a tendency here to let it boil over and reach for any possible fall-man.
  22. Parts of your case were heavily opinion, but you're not going to change your views either way. To each their own.
  23. I'm not in any way at all trying to defend the current payroll nor ticket prices. They both need work.
  24. That was in response to Leviathan who was advocating spending $40M more ($120M total)... and you want to know where I got $100M from? Leviathan, I'll let you jump in here since... How am I on both sides of this argument? I think the Twins should have spent both too much and too little? What?? Let's clarify... I think the Twins should have signed a better SP than they did. Fact 1 - they didn't. I think the Twins payroll should be higher than it is, at least similar to last year. Fact 2- it isn't. Others claim to know how/why and while I presume there is in fact a reason behind it all, I don't go around claiming to know exactly how the business is run.
