  1. But maybe Duensing just needs a little breather from the pressure. Same with Burton. I'd like to see what others in the bullpen can do. You don't know what will happen until they are put in a pressure situation.
  2. Tom Powers had a reasonably good summary: Tom Powers: Twins' trade chips falling wrong way - TwinCities.com Color me disheartened.
  3. Cleaning up Dog Poop>watching the Twins play the Yankees
  4. I'd happily put the rounding error in my bank account....
  5. Doumit looked awful at times but I found Berardino's take on the Diamond-Doumit pairing to be interesting: Minnesota Twins: Twinsights after 10-4 loss to the New York Yankees » Twins Now
  6. But shouldn't you just point out that the one game (or 2 games or whatever) significantly impacted the stat rather than saying the person is cherry-picking? I really didn't have any idea that a 1 game performance could have that much of an effect on OPS. Learn something every day.
  7. But frontloading should actually be more valuable to the player. He has the money early and can be gain interest (or investment income) on it. Obviously this wouldn't happen often but it is certainly a concept that a team like the Twins (with a low current payroll) should think about.
  8. Gardenhire should just go fishing when the Twins are scheduled to play the Yankees.
  9. I was going to go to bed ... but now its like watching the disaster footage to see how bad things are.

  11. Congrats on your upwardly-mobile, crazy season. And thanks for taking the time to let us know how it is going -- always enjoy your posts.
  12. To me this is one of the most overused phrases on this site. Despite John Bonnes' article last year, I will never believe it when used in general with regard to an AL Central team. This current Twins team just doesn't have the pitching horses to do anything against teams with winning records. And, unfortunately, I believe that being in the AL Central has been a dis-incentive to the Twins to do what they need to do to get to that championship caliber point (and I mean champion of something beyond the AL Central). It gives a false sense of security -- why take risks if you are going to rake in money and make the playoffs? There is no incentive to be better than "just good enough" to win the AL Central. And to see the possibility raised of not pursuing trades this year because they might somehow squeak into the playoffs makes my blood boil. Not accepting a trade because you are not offered enough is one thing. Not accepting a trade at this point because somehow the other teams in your division may be bad enough to lose to you and somehow miraculously let you squeak in to the playoffs is another. The Twins have been there, done that. It isn't enough for me anymore. Despite the pain of the last 2 1/2 years, at least it was SO bad that it gave hope that the Twins might have to do something different. I do not want to see them sacrifice the possibility of long-term gains for some miraculous playoff run this season.
  13. But even if you are right and the Twins could somehow sneak into the playoffs, I don't want them to go that direction -- because there is no doubt in my mind that they are not a championship caliber team. I want to see them make moves toward a solid championship team -- and that means some short term sacrifices for long term improvement.
  14. At this point, I just want to see if he can stay healthy for the rest of the year. Even though he played in 134 games last year, I think most of us were a bit on "pins and needles" waiting to see what happened. It's easy to just think about the devastating effects of the concussion when he was on such a roll in 2010 but you also have to remember the agony of August 2009 when many of us could tell something was wrong but Gardenhire just kept penning him in the line-up. I'm anxious to see if his little power surge of the last few games can continue. I'm glad that the trade deadline is a month off so that we can see what develops. My reaction a week ago was to let him play out the season so that he and the team could have a graceful parting. But the last week has given me new hope -- both that the Twins could get something in return for a trade and that Justin could go to a team that has a chance of post-season success. His injury history still makes me leary about any kind of multi-year commitment to him (even though 32 still looks pretty young from my vantage point). But I've always liked him as a Twin and, in the same way that I hoped that Thome could get a ring elsewhere, I hope the same for Morneau because I think the odds of him playing well long enough to win one with the Twins are pretty slim. And a lot can still happen to change the market in the next 3-4 weeks.
  15. You're looking at this from an analytical level and I don't think most fans do that - especially not casual fans. There is no question that Joe Mauer has had the better overall career and if statistics were all that mattered, he'd clearly be everyone's favorite. But, there were a lot of people for whom Cuddy was the favorite when he was a Twin and some who favored Kubel, Denard Span and others. Morneau seems more emotionally distant to me now than he did earlier in his career. When he won the MVP award in 2006 (a lifetime ago now), he seemed to have more fire and personality than he does now. I really think that all his struggles over the last few years have taken a toll on him in many ways (of course, a marriage and children may also have mellowed him out somewhat). But I have fond memories of that young Justin Morneau. It isn't that I dislike Joe Mauer and I certainly appreciate all of his accomplishments. I've just never felt any emotional attachment to him as a fan. But there are obviously a lot of people who have done so. Different people appreciate different qualities in different players.
  16. And a single today to make it 27 straight.
  17. I can't speak to currently. I don't have any particularly strong feelings either way on Mauer and Morneau at this point in time. I think Morneau's struggles kind of wore me out and I'm now much more interested in the younger players. But historically, I always felt that Morneau was much more the "heart and soul" of this team than Mauer. I admire Mauer's abilities but frankly, he just leaves me cold when it comes to an emotional connection to the team. Perhaps it is because it is hard for me to form that emotional connection with someone who is just "too perfect" -- flaws are what makes someone interesting. Perhaps it is just because I'm not a Minnesotan and never did have (or understand) the near-worshipful attitude that is exhibited by some fans. And Mr. Mauer did not help himself with me when he made it pretty clear that he didn't want to go to Rochester during his rehab in 2011 but wanted to stay in Florida. In any event, I can understand why some fans would root harder for Morneau than for Mauer. And I would guess that it has nothing to do with statistics of any kind. (And I probably still do so myself but I really find myself caring more about the Plouffes, Arcias, Hicks, Parmelees, Gibsons, etc. of the team). P.S. I don't know that the "best player" on the team is always the "fan favorite". Seems to me there are other factors than ability that go into connecting with fans.
  18. I don't know why there wasn't an option -- but Boras is his agent so that may explain alot.
  19. But Pelfrey is only signed for 2013 anyway so I guess that isn't a concern for me. I would expect him to be better in 2014 (and I think a lot of people were a bit puzzled by the 1 year contract w/o an option).
  20. I have no idea who is cheering for whom but I have to think that a lot of fans are simply happy that Morneau seems to have finally made it back from his concussion and other injuries. The last few years have been a tremendously long haul for him and even last year, people were a bit on pins and needles to see what might happen next. How could you not be happy to see HIM happy? As for trying to judge fan favorites, why even try? It varies from month to month and even game to game. Not just among casual fans but even among the more dedicated fans found here.
  21. It was good to see him just keep working even when he hit some trouble spots. Seemed to have a lot of composure. Now if he can just keep it up for another 10 years.
  22. Thanks Andrew. I really enjoyed this -- great personal observations. Seems like the rain wants to get in the games this year.
  23. Here's another example of the confusion. This was posted by Brock Beauchamp in the thread about trading Perkins: I'd rather punch myself in the face every time I pick up my phone than follow FanaticJack on Twitter. Because, at the end of the day, those two things are pretty much the same thing. How is this not at least as bad as what was posted about AG??? Or is it simply okay because it was posted by a moderator? I've never received even a reprimand or an e-mail here but that doesn't mean that I don't feel the chilling effect of all of this moderation and of the varying standards. While I appreciate your desire to grow the site, you are simply taking most of the fun out of it.
  24. I just wish everybody would leave the mound alone. What is this incessant need that people seem to have to express their religion, their pain or whatever? See a blank space? Fill it up. Dead time on the air? Fill it up. Spend your life texting or tweeting or posting about every thought or action you ever had. This curmudgeon thinks that people have taken freedom of expression way too far. I'd like a little freedom from other people's expressions.
  25. Thanks, Parker, for another great explanation of techniques.
