  1. Just thinking in terms of pitching around him (even more so than last year) -- I can see his walks going up but doubles going down.
  2. The only thing I can think of is that it isn't really a comment on Mauer but a comment on what Mauer can do given the dreck surrounding him.
  3. Other than lingering concussion symptoms (which don't really seem to exist), does he give any reason for the Mauer drop? I just don't see it happening (and heaven knows i haven't been Mauer's biggest fan).
  4. Great review and nice to see those smiling faces! Sounds like your "biggest complaints" are ones that the Twins staff can easily solve for next year.
  5. Nobody should have any problem with any of the rankings. Rankings are always just someone's opinion. The only thing that matters is what happens when they play (as long as they keep their noses relatively clean off the field).
  6. When TF opened, there was endless talk about the "TF experience" .... much more than about the baseball. As though this were merely an entertainment option and the product didn't matter. It was all about marketing. I hope that they have now come to the realization that the "experience" revolves around what happens on the field. If what happens there isn't good, the big screens, bars, soial media nights, etc. etc. don't matter either.
  7. Kind of boggles the mind that Garza reportedly received "only" $50m over 4 years w/vesting option for $13m in the 5th. Who saw that coming in November? There are also reportedly some extras that could bring the 5-year total to $67m -- incentives of some kind, I suppose.
  8. "but the Twins are moving Joe Mauer to first base due to their confidence in Pinto" I really don't think that confidence in Pinto is WHY they are moving Mauer to 1B. I think Mauer would have been moved regardless. I do think that if they didn't have Pinto, they probably would have had to be a little more aggressive in the FA catching market than Kurt Suzuki. I know that's nitpicking because I do think the Twins have confidence in Pinto and I hope he proves them (and Schoenfield) right but it isn't as if Pinto forced the issue of moving Mauer to 1B. Concerns over Mauer's health and long-term value to the club caused the move.
  9. I found the following article interesting: http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_24989435/minnesota-twins-hoping-modest-increase-home-attendance Apparently even the prospect of All Star game tickets couldn't stop the bleeding with the season-ticket base: A full season-ticket equivalent base that has dropped steadily from 25,000 in 2010 to last year's 19,000 is only projected to reach 17,000 by Opening Day, St. Peter said. .... "To get back to 19, let me just say this, it would take a pennant race in September in order for us to get there," St. Peter said. "If we're having a good season, it's feasible you could add a couple thousand FSEs during the course of the season. That's possible. But if you're not in contention, that's going to be tough." I hope the players they've signed will help the Twins stay below the 90 loss level but does anyone think they've done enough to truly make them contenders?
  10. It was pretty clear that the Garza camp was waiting until after Tanaka was resolved. Frankly, given the abysmal state of Twins pitching in 2013, I don't think the Twins could wait to see what happened with him. They needed to sign Nolasco and Hughes early. They probably could have waited before signing Pelfrey but even with Pelfrey signed, I think they still could have signed Garza -- I just don't think it was very likely as Thrylos stated. At this point I would rate the Twins' off-season at about a C+/B-. But they still have time (and money) to do a little more work.
  11. BINGO!!!! It is amazing how his market value grew. I hope that a few of the guys who have actually pitched in the ML reap some of the fallout.
  12. It is just money. And taking each team as a separate business (no comments about the relative wealth of the owners), the Yankees can simply afford to take a lot bigger $$$$ risks than the Twins. So can the Dodgers, Angels, Rangers and a number of other teams. Could the Twins have afforded to pay Tanaka? Yes. Would it have been a smart risk? No. It may work out for the Yankees. It may not. Even if it doesn't, a bad $155 million ($175 million investment w/posting fee) isn't back-breaking for them given their revenues. It would be awfully hard to stomach for the Twins (and their fans).
  13. Nope. And despite all the earlier chatter in the media about the Yankees staying under the luxury tax threshold, that was apparently blown apart, too: Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN Yankees were already slightly over the $189m luxury tax threshold before Tanaka signing... so, that # is in the rear-view mirror. 7:56 AM - 22 Jan 2014
  14. Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 8m BREAKING: Tanaka to #Yankees, seven years, $155M, opt-out after fourth year.
  15. Masons has agreed to shut down the entire restaurant for the event, which means we will begin selling more tickets at 8AM on Thursday morning. I don’t know how many just yet, but it will be more than a handful and could be as many as 100.
  16. Good Berardino summary: http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_24958042/twins-could-send-pitcher-andrew-albers-south-korea And sounds like Albers would get somewhat more than the ML minimum (even if he made the team) so financially a win-win for him and the Twins ... especially if he felt like his chances of making the big league club were minimal.
  17. Interesting project from Fox Sports Wisconsin/FSN: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/minnaert-fox-sports-embark-on-baseball-voyage-to-the-dominican-republic?ymd=20140120&content_id=66820612&vkey=news_mlb
  18. Thank you. To me it would have been totally inappropriate for the arbitrator to be on -- and I understand why the MLBPA would be upset. And Selig should have stayed off. If he wasn't going to testify at the hearing, he should have shut up now as well. He should have just let Manfred represent the Commissioner's office.
  19. I missed the 60 minutes segment but have been wondering whether the arbitrator appeared (was apparently scheduled according to mlbpa statement of disgust). Did he appear? What did he say?
  20. Glass Half Full. Glass Half Empty. BOTH.
  21. I'm sure the Yankees are looking for ways to void the contract but we can only hope that they stay on the hook. No one will ever convince me that they weren't complicit in this mess.
  22. This isn't a criminal proceeding. MLB has no power to put A-Rod in jail. They do have the power to affect his livelihood and legacy but that is the same as in many civil cases. To me, the standard would be "preponderance of the evidence" certainly not proof beyond a reasonable doubt. And a neutral arbitrator has now found that A-Rod deserved to be suspended for 162 games. Until we have the opportunity to read his full decision (if we ever get that), we don't know what evidence he considered at arriving at his conclusion that a 162 game suspension was warranted. But I'd pretty much guess that there had to be something there for him to go beyond the 50 games.
  23. He saw Andrews sometime before November: http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20131107&content_id=63767074&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb Not sure when or if he has seen him since. Always have to remember that even though a lot of medicine is science, there is still some art involved as well.
  24. Rumor mill is about as cold as the weather. (Thanks for the round-up though, Nick).
  25. One of my favorite things about baseball is the chance for redemption. When Miguel Cabrera screwed up the final weekend in 2009 and then had the infamous drunken on the highway incident right before spring training in 2011, I was glad he wasn't a Twin .... but he has redeemed himself both on the field and seemingly off the field (at least no more big reported incidents). It's easy to forget how young these kids are. When I think back to some of the things I was stupid enough to do in my early 20's, I think, "there but for the grace of God, go I...." I hope that Rosario learns a lesson from this and becomes one of the great redemption stories.
