  1. One more factor. Perkins is another homegrown product, good in the community and popular with fans. The Twins do have some affection for that. Some may think that the Twins have gotten/are getting burned by taking that into account in the Mauer contract. I suspect the Twins accountants know exactly how much Mauer and Perkins generate in jersey sales, etc. Sometimes it isn't solely about what the player produces on the field.
  2. Maybe because they believe in him and think that they just paid $22.175 M for Glen Perkins for 4 years whereas Detroit paid $20M for 2 years of Joe Nathan ($19M plus $1M buyout). While Nathan's pedigree may be better, Perkins is 8 1/2 years younger than Nathan. Obviously the Twins have had a chance to compare both. Apparently Perkins approached the team about re-working an extension. Overall years and dollars seem pretty reasonable. Of course there is risk to the team. But if Perkins performs well, he has also accepted risk because he undoubtedly could have gotten more money down the road. That's what mutually agreed upon deals are all about.
  3. I wish I shared your confidence.
  4. Typed too soon. Twins can pull out win but at least it shouldn't be another L.
  5. Could have used a couple of those runs at Hammond.
  6. Sounds pretty reasonable given the details available. It's clear that he and Mauer WANT to stay at home. Now the job is to get some talent around them before they are too far on the downward slide ... and yes, the Twins made a start but that's all it is. Pressure is on for prospects to mature and FA's to do their part.
  7. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 2m Glen Perkins guaranteed $22.175M thru 2017 under new deal ($700K buyout for 2018). 3-team no trade clause, per person w/direct knowledge
  8. Florimon update via Berardino this afternoon: Gardy on Florimon: "Moving great. No issues." Should play 3 innings Friday on minor league side. "Next few days he'll be back w/us."
  9. Thanks jokin. Now I know to dig deeper into BR!
  10. I honestly wonder if there isn't more pressure to win this year than we know about. That would explain to me why the Twins would want these new pitchers (veteran though they are) to have an experienced backstop because they are going to have to have some pretty good pitching with their somewhat anemic offense (and while Pinto adds on the offensive side, the Twins have had a bit of a love affair with defensive catchers at times). While many of us would rather see some of the more advanced prospects get the bulk of playing time, it was pretty clear that ownership is looking for more W's. The Twins need to stop the season ticket sale slide and their best bet for doing that is putting a product on the field that is competitive deeper into the season. In the long run, I think that may delay development a bit but it does explain both the pitcher signings and the "back to the future" minor league deals to Kubel, Guerrier and Bartlett.
  11. That's one of the things that makes judging the ST performances difficult, e.g. Colabello has been hitting well but has he faced the same quality of pitchers as others? It's really hard to tell from a distance.
  12. I agree on the Hawks, JC although I hope they can manage to beat Northwestern. You may have seen more of the Twins game than I did ... I've been trying to switch around plus get some photos edited so I haven't been paying much attention. Purdue/Ohio State close though.
  13. Hawkeyes gonna manage to win tonight, JC? Ugh..... this season started with such rosy prospects. (And I was so sorry to read about Fran's son's health problems....difficult time for the family.) Did watch the 'clones pull it out.
  14. The hard thing about early/mid ST is that we don't really see much of the 2nd and 3rd times through the line-up. That's what I'm waiting to see.
  15. Going back to the curve is one of the things he and Anderson talked about. It definitely worked for him with Ortiz. Apparently over-thinking/tinkering is a big problem for Hughes. If he can just get past that and trust what he is doing, he should be a solid #3 (actually a #2 for this team at this point, I think). 28 pitches (19 strikes) thru 2 IP for Hughes. Pretty nice line so far.
  16. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 32s Dr. Altchek told #mntwins there is "no doubt (Sano) will be full strength and ready to go for spring training next year," Gotta love good news. Now Miguel gets to do the hard work.
  17. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 1m 15-pitch first for Phil Hughes vs. #RedSox. Ten of those were to Victorino. 10 of 15 strikes, 1/3 FPS. #MNTwins Sometimes I wish Twins hitters would work the count the way that Victorino did. Then again, I think of how long the Red Sox/Yankees games are and think, oh, forget about it.
  18. Happy Birthday!!! You also get a lot of NCAA basketball (this weekend & next weekend are two of my favorite sports weekends of the year) PLUS a little pre-St. Pat's partying. All in all, a great day.
  19. 13 starters or 13 pitchers, Seth? Really curious on this one.
  20. Thanks, ChiTown. I think we could almost match the Florida Temps today. Only 49 now but predicted to get to 66 in my corner of Iowa. One of those days when it almost feels too warm, too soon.
  21. If you and Andrew (and any other TD readers) find each other at the dinner, post a shot for us!
  22. Jeff Todd has a thought-provoking piece about the Qualifying Offer system over at mlb trade rumors: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/03/contextualizing-the-qualifying-offer-system.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter There is a lot to think about in this piece and I'm really looking forward to his follow-up article on what the QO system accomplishes. This first installment goes to the question of Fundamental Fairness. Was it fair that Santana had to deal with the impact of a QO when Garza (a seemingly better pitcher) did not because he was lucky enough to be traded mid-season? What impact does the QO system have on the entire free agency process? Will the number of QOs increase? Will players ever start accepting QOs? It is going to be interesting to see how this issue develops before the CBA is renewed. EDIT: The follow-up blog is now posted (sorry for the delay in catching it): http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/03/assessing-the-qualifying-offer-system-and-its-purposes.html I haven't read it yet but will probably post something down below after I do. Just thought I'd put both links in the top post.
  23. Heezy1323's comments come from the Ligaments Are Stupid thread: http://www.twinsdaily.com/showthread.php/10378-Article-Ligaments-Are-Stupid There was also a long discussion of Sano's injury and treatment here: http://www.twinsdaily.com/showthread.php/10375-Article-It-s-Official-Sano-to-have-Tommy-John-Surgery
  24. Today's Line-up: Hicks CF Dozier 2B Mauer 1B Willingham LF Arcia RF Plouffe 3B Kubel DH Suzuki C Santana SS Media pundits all seem to agree that this is close to the opening day line-up: Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 1h Pretty much the Opening Day lineup today, with possible exception of CF and SS . Rhett Bollinger ‏@RhettBollinger 1h Today's #MNTwins lineup could closely resemble Opening Day's LaVelle E. Neal III ‏@LaVelleNeal 1 This could be one player short of the Opening Day lineup I would guess that LEN3 is thinking Florimon instead of Santana. CF still seems wide-open to me -- no one has put their best foot forward yet. But what has Kubel done to "earn" that spot? Seems to me that we need to see a lot more from him over the next two weeks before he should be penciled in.
  25. Step on a cactus lately? K-Rod stepped on a cactus. ... Why was Rodriguez walking around barefoot in cactus country? That question remained unanswered because he was busy in the trainer's room, according to a spokesperson. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/brewers-reliever-francisco-rodriguez-gets-treatment-after-stepping-on-cactus?ymd=20140312&content_id=69172758&vkey=news_mlb
