  1. Great point since Santana is on the 40 man and there is a little risk there. But I also wonder if this is just an acknowledgment that Florimon may not be fully back from his appendix operation. I know he has started infield drills but it isn't clear when he'll be in games. I just don't know if it's as big of an indicator as you may wish although Gardenhire clearly does have some liking for Santana.
  2. I'm hoping that if he can get his own game going, Pelfrey can be that veteran. He seems to want that leadership role ... but it all depends on whether he can come through with the innings and reasonably good starts.
  3. It's a little disappointing because some of these guys were seemingly playing some of the better ball this spring and were fun to watch. It's understandable why they would send Kepler down (don't want to risk injury in camp now that he's on the 40 man) but he does seem to have found something more this spring -- hopefully he can transition that down to minor league camp as well. Buxton was struggling in ML camp, though. Nice that he got a big home run and could exit on a bit of a high note. Meyer is probably the most surprising to me just because he seems fairly close to the majors and isn't on the 40 man -- but they do have a lot of pitchers in camp that they are still "cycling through". (And apparently things like that rain out the other day can really throw the schedule off). And I suppose they need catchers for the minor league operation to run well, too. Glad they had the opportunity to work with Steinbach -- was a great addition to the coaching staff.
  4. http://newbritainherald.com/articles/2014/03/08/sports/doc531be18136e4f742081732.txt Thanks to Seth (@SethTweets) for retweeting this article by Matt Straub of the New Britain Herald. One of my favorite parts of the article is the perspective that the following paragraph gives on what all prospects/young players face: “One of the guys who made a big impact was Al Nipper,” Pavano said of the former Boston Red Sox pitcher and coach. “I learned a tremendous amount from him at 18 or 19 years old, things like reading hitters, how to create work habits. You have to be a sponge, but you have to know not everything is going to work. You can’t let it frustrate you. Things that are going to help you, a new pitch, a new way to set up hitters. There’s so much to baseball besides just knowing hitters. Away from home you’re responsible for yourself. There’s a maturity that goes into it at 18 or 19 years old. The responsibility wasn’t exams, it was if you wanted to succeed in baseball you had to take care of yourself.” I have a feeling that young players may get more help now making that transition than they did in the mid 90's -- from their teams and their agents -- but it still explains a bit why the Twins talk so much about "makeup" when they talk about players like Buxton and Sano. It also gives support for a player having to know himself -- and to figure out what works for him. A bit of a balancing act there in terms of trying to learn everything that is thrown at you but knowing that not everything will work for you.
  5. I don't think Buxton has had a good day at the plate yet. Before today, I think he was 2/14 (not sure if this includes "B" games). I'm not particularly worried about this because this ST should be a huge learning experience for him. Just another reminder, though, that a prospect is still a prospect and that there is a learning curve.
  6. http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/03/08/twinsights-eddie-rosario-dealing-with-personal-issues-agent-says/ Let's all hope that Eddie gets his life in order and can come back and focus on baseball.
  7. Didn't want to start a new thread on this but found this column on Stuart Turner interesting: http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/2014/03/07/twinsights-catching-prospect-stuart-turner-learns-from-terry-steinbach/ I hope a catcher with a 4.0 GPA is more acceptable than a smart player at other positions.
  8. Well, Miller did have a near death experience this morning: Rhett Bollinger ‏@RhettBollinger 3h Nothing like watching @MillerStrib almost get hit by foul ball in the B game. Gardy told him he can't criticize his team for errors anymore. Phil Miller ‏@MillerStrib 3h Nearly killed by foul pop that tailed as I ducked. Missed by inches. Gardy: "I don't ever want you to criticize our players for an error."
  9. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 2m Worley threw 47 pitches, 26 strikes, fell behind 1-0 to half the 12 batters he faced. #mntwins Rhett Bollinger ‏@RhettBollinger 6m Worley gives up a two-run homer to McCutchen and that's it for him after 1 1/3 IP. #MNTwins down 5-0. Sigh.
  10. Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture a little of the glory of, well time slips away and leaves you with nothing mister but boring stories of glory days
  11. Posterity cares about what we say here???? Oh, cr*p.
  12. Thanks for the perspective. Have to wonder if you'd added Aaron Hicks to your interviews if you wouldn't have heard something similar. And Brian Dozier, part 1. Please republish this article or bring it back to the top of the comments when we see the (almost inevitable) struggles of prospects as they come to the ML club over the next year or two. While some may be better able to control the nerves, that would seem to be a pretty common reaction.
  13. So am I special if I didn't get one????
  14. Well, there was one today that Pinto was supposed to start. Obviously didn't happen because of the rain. There are 2 games tomorrow and it doesn't look like Pinto is slated for either of them. Suzuki to start the "A" game with Rohlfing and Turner as backups. Kyle Knudson (I think) to start the "B" game with Chris Herrmann as back-up (I could be wrong on who is the starter there but those are the 2 with names highlighted for "B" game travel and Knudson has a red mark next to his name so I think that may make him the starter.) Does kind of make you wonder why Pinto couldn't have traveled/played tomorrow unless they are still babying his back a little. Edit: I'm wrong: Herrmann is starting the "B" game with Knudson as back-up. In fairness, I think management puts these travel schedules together before the day's game so Pinto is probably not scheduled for tomorrow because he was supposed to start today.
  15. I don't know who the Twins are "grooming" for GM. At one time I thought it was Radcliffe but I'm not sure if he is interested (can't forget about the "refusing" to let him interview for an outside GM position and have to wonder if that was just an easy way for him to take a pass). Lately it does seem more like Antony. There is a real core group of Twins leadership that has been with the team for more than 20 years -- Terry Ryan since the early 80's (I think); Radcliffe & Antony since 1987; Bill Smith since 1986; St. Peter since 1990; Gardenhire & Ullger since the early 1990's; Followell since 1989. Even Deron Johnson has been in the Twins scouting structure since 1994. Obviously a lot will depend on Terry Ryan's health but I have to wonder if there aren't 2 basic scenarios: 1. Ryan "rights the ship" and the Twins get back to a winning record no later than 2015 and one of his long-time lieutenants takes over; or 2. The ship is mostly dead in the water and ownership finally decides to make a major change and bring in outside talent. I don't think it is obvious what is going to happen. I look for names that would be a bit younger than the 80's group and about the only one two I can see are Brad Steil and Jack Goin. I don't know if either of them would be a possibility. Edit: They still have Krivsky on board as well who obviously has GM experience but that just doesn't seem as likely to me either for some reason.
  16. Apparently it was a sell-out so you're right about attendance. Ryan Pressly just tweeted 2 photos. One with "I think we can still play" and a second with water gushing in the dugout saying "OK maybe not." Rain extends out into the Gulf so it could be a long time before game starts (if ever).
  17. Big hit was a 3 run homer off Burton by Monell.
  18. Thanks for putting this up! I was too lazy to do it. Pelfrey working much faster tonight than last year.
  19. Interesting that A.J. was the Twins' first choice for a catcher. http://blogs.twincities.com/twins/ “There’s no doubt A.J. was our No. 1 target going into the offseason,” Antony told the Pioneer Press. “He brings a lot to the table. He’s got a lot of intangibles. He’s got a little bit of that fire, that attitude that we thought would be a good thing in this clubhouse. “We’ve got a lot of good guys. Sometimes it’s good to have somebody that will speak their mind and go out there. Plus, I think he can still hit. He’s still got some power. So there’s no question about that.”
