  1. I'm thinking that he means that the TIGERS would still forfeit a draft pick for this year (if the signing is before the June date) BUT that Drew may be more willing to sign a one-year deal now because he wouldn't be subject to a QO at the end of this year. Is that a correct understanding of how the QO system works? **And Rosenthal does a lot of speculating but he does have some pretty good sources.
  2. I wondered about that, too and was hoping someone would clarify.
  3. Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 6m Just speculation, but wouldn’t surprise me to see #Tigers sign Drew soon. Season has started, no longer can get QO if he takes 1-year deal.
  4. If I were to bet on one of the 14, it would be #4. Just gut feeling.
  5. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 6m Plan is to honor Gardy for 1,000th win before second home game, 4/9 vs OAK. Still 2 wins away. Do they have to tempt the baseball gods?
  6. If the gusts we're getting here today hit Chicago early enough, it could be a really interesting afternoon.
  7. May it be filled with healthy players, happy surprises, sunny days, starry nights and plenty of beer for those of you who imbibe.
  8. That may be true but when I look at regulars on other teams in our division, the discrepancy between last season and 2014 Spring Training just isn't that great. In fact, a lot of them have ST numbers that are generally better than their full season numbers from 2013. I wonder if this is a truism that is becoming less and less true as players train year 'round.
  9. I was actually doing pretty well with my optimism level until "Double Jason" became clear. For some reason, adding BOTH of them to the 25-man just made me lose it. As though this team and this management are stuck somewhere in the past and we will never escape. And yes, I get it that as a factual matter, it may not make much difference but for me, it feels like a giant rut, devoid of innovation.
  10. Factually, it is much ado about (almost) nothing. Symbolically, it is representative of the uninspired course that this organization has been following for (more) than the past three years. How many teams seek to change "team chemistry" through the 25th man on their roster? Teams change team chemistry by changing the leadership of the organization -- the GM and/or the manager. And then they may make some additions or deletions to the roster that contribute to a change in chemistry. Will Bartlett (or Kubel) for that matter make or break this team? No. But it just demonstrates that the "old boys club" atmosphere is still in place in Minnesota. Same old, same old.
  11. Well, my premonition about Duensing was right just for the wrong reason. Congrats to them.
  12. I do love the idea of Tonkin being in. Have to wonder if something isn't going to happen to Duensing.
  13. Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 5m Michael Tonkin is here. Roster tweak TBA.
  14. This makes sense to me. I use Chrome primarily for TD and some other sports sites. But after my first post on this, I tried a few searches. Results came up fine but I had trouble clicking into many of the sites. Thanks for mentioning that chrome was having problems. (And, sorry Brock and TD but I use Ad Blocking. I'm totally a demographic that your advertisers wouldn't want but I don't suppose they could know that so if they have ad blocking detection, I apologize but I do love not having to deal with the ads).
  15. The comparison of their perceptions is, more than anything, a story of timing and of the fickleness of the public's love. Kirby was charismatic with his grin and outgoing personality. Before 2011, Joe was also charismatic albeit in a quiet, midwestern way. How quickly we forget that he was the "hometown hero". But after Kirby signed his record contract, he went on to lead the team to a 2nd world championship. Even after that, the Twins had another really good season before tailing off. I have to wonder if Puckett would have maintained the same level of love as the losing seasons mounted up. But there is always charisma in a career cut short -- especially in the way that Kirby's was. After Joe signed his franchise record contract, the team had one more good season before things went in the dumps. And Joe was injured, too, but it wasn't career ending. His legend probably would have held up better if the "bilateral leg weakness" had been some well-defined, career ending injury. There's no question that Puckett was more charismatic (I've often mentioned that as a non-Minnesotan, I couldn't understand the Mauer love prior to 2011) but perception is also based on recent events and accomplishments and with Puckett, a bit on nostalgia (and a willingness to overlook some of his faults, too). Perception of both players will continue to change over time. The lucky thing for Joe is that he still has time to do some building on his legacy.
  16. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/29/sports/baseball/in-an-era-of-squiggles-you-cant-tell-baseball-the-players-without-a-handwriting-analyst.html?_r=1 Twins fans know how Harmon felt about autographs but this is a great retelling. Loved the story from Torii Hunter.
  17. I just want to thank Parker, Nick, Seth and John for all of the articles, photos, tweets and other information from Spring Training. Not quite like "being there" (it's still a little chilly here) but it added a lot more depth, analysis and understanding than many of the mainstream media reports available this spring. Thanks, too, to all of the TD posters who were at Spring Training and took the time to post bits of info and photos. They added a lot of background and color to the more formal reports. (I don't want to say specific names because I know I'll forget someone but there have been so many interesting posts filled with observations, humor and photos). Here's to a season that is BETTER than most of us anticipate!
  18. "I see a lot of different lineups nowadays and I’ve been reading into it a little bit more, talking to our people -- it can come up interesting sometimes.” Good article I do find it interesting that he is using the analytics team a little more. It is just really hard to see where runs are going to come from unless Willingham and Kubel really get on track. To me, that's the difference between being semi-respectable and dismal.
  19. Psst ... Parker, you've been down there a long time. It's still Saturday (2nd paragraph).
  20. As long as he can remember to duplicate it regularly, its okay.
  21. I think that beard is one of the ugliest things I've seen in a long time. There were other ugly ones on that team but I do believe his was an ugly prize winner.
  22. ChiTown, our forecast for tomorrow is 67 degrees, clear & sunny, wind at about 13. About as nice as could be wished for this time of year. I'll try to blow hard so that it reaches you by Monday.
  23. It was amazing how quickly Title IX changed things for girls in athletics. The funny thing was that my school district was made up of 2 small towns. The smaller one always had girls basketball but the larger one didn't. When the two towns merged in 1959, girls basketball was eliminated. And other sports opportunities for girls were more limited. It took until Title IX to get back girls basketball in my high school and by then I was a senior. But we did have softball and track before that but I'll admit, I'm a lousy athlete. And yes, the boys never gave us any advantages.
  24. Well, Parker thought it was and he a little less into hype than the TV/radio guys. Twins Daily ‏@TwinsDaily 58s Aaron Hicks just made a terrific play on a Dustin Pedroia deep smash to the triangle of center field. Defense is certainly coming together. At least I think this is still Parker?
  25. It's better and mostly lays out the same (no more "allow blocked content") but the thing that bugs me the most is that IE11 still renders text significantly differently than Chrome and FF.
