  1. Toronto, the Cubs, and maybe Houston were the only teams in a position to sign Reid-Foley and Toronto pulled the trigger, we just didn't have the $ for him. It was possibly the same thing with Harrison and I don't think the Brewers will be able to sign him unless the rest of their picks are college seniors
  2. I found this article from last year, they were early on talking about him as a top 5 overall: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20130610/draft-prospects-carlos-rodon/
  3. I like Burdi, he doesn't have the upside as one of the HS guys but we might have not had the money to sign one of them and who know's what Gordon's demands were. Burdi pitches 100+ and he could help us out this year or beginning of next year, could be much worse
  4. Grant Holmes is officially the worst interview ever
  5. Man, it would've been cool for the Royals to draft Zimmer so the brothers could play together.......oh well, they went with a college reliever that will probably flame out, good for us
  6. I enjoyed listening to him say Michael Conforto from Or-eh-gone State
  7. He doesn't remind me of either, he has better fielding (potential) and speed than both and he will most likely have less power than both as well. I'll take Jimmy Rollins or Jeter as a better comp but I'm not a scout.
  8. I've been openly down on Gordon because of the questionable bat, I've warmed up on him the more I've read and watched. In 2012 I was also down on Buxton early on because of the questionable bat and competition, the more I read up on him and watched tape I went fully on the Buxton bandwagon. Here's to hoping the same thing happens with Gordon! I'll be rooting for the next Jeter (only not as douchy and not on the evil empire).
  9. Word on some of the Houston boards is that Nolan Ryan (who's with the Astros now) likes Kolek and is pushing hard for him.......interesting, I know that Ryan has personally scouted Kolek several times
  10. http://www.milb.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2008/index.jsp?mc=tbeckham this is his scouting report, it sounds a ton like Gordon to me, that scares me a ton. What makes me feel a little better is that Correa had similar reports
  11. While true that draft experts and scouts do "know more than us" I think there is an element of them over thinking stuff and fans can sometimes be more objective. Baseball's a bit different because most of these guys are complete unknown to most fans unlike in football but I can recall many times where a pick was not liked by the fans and they were right. When we picked Gutierrez in 2008 everyone hated it and he turned out to be awful, Padres fans were up in arms about Matt Bush in 2004, many Rays fans wanted Posey(Florida State fans mostly) and we're pissed about Beckham, examples like that. I'm not saying we're smarter but there are times when the obvious pick was there and teams pass for stupid reasons.
  12. This is not true, it was stated a week or so ago but there are reports that the Twins have been represented at almost all of Nola's starts including the conference tournament
  13. Pedro pitched for 18 years, Johnson and Ryan pitched for 24 and 27 years respectively. Although great, Pedro had less dominate years. Ryan also had 7 no hitters, that's crazy. In their prime there's really no way to compare but back to your original claim, I don't see any of these guys in Touki. In fact you could make the claim that Maddux makes Nola look better, Maddux never really had dominate "stuff" but he was still un hittable, Nola at least for the time being seems to be that guy too
  14. Easy, It's a tie between Ryan and Johnson because Johnson hit a bird with a pitch and Ryan hit Robin Ventura with his fist........
  15. I would have to go with Kolek as the highest ceiling, he has the potential to become a Nolan Ryan/Randy Johnson type, Touki just doesn't have that kind of ceiling
  16. Not enough college relievers, the twins are gonna probably pick up at least 6 in their first 10 picks
  17. However it would be fun to play the "Achen' for some bacon" clip from Lion King every time he came in
  18. we have about as much chance of that happening as we had with Tanaka signing with us........
  19. I thought it was Punto's thumb, maybe that was Cuddyer. I also forgot about Morneau. Is that how Koskie had his career ended?
  20. A few years ago I think it cost punto and Cuddyer some time, does any one else remember that?
  21. I still like Turner too but his swing mechanics are funky and turn a lot of scouts off, sometimes funky mechanics work out (hunter pence, Gary Sheffield, Kevin Youkilis) but often times they do not, that's his main problem right now and I don't think we'd take that gamble at #5
  22. A top 5 pick in the draft their first year will usually be placed top 100 and #5 will usually be in the 70s - 80s range. Rosario was a top 100 guy before the suspension but Thorpe is not, our pick (until we can see what he can do) would most likely be placed either above or right below Rosario on most lists. I would probably put Nola above and Gordon below
  23. I agree 100%, I hate it when the experts label a guy as a "what you see is what you get" type of guy, no guy out of college has maxed out his potential. Watcha added velocity to his FB and so did Heaney, why not Nola? He isn't the biggest guy but he's not short either.
  24. Also the know on Watcha is he only had 2 plus pitches and he still does, it will catch up to him eventually as a starter, could get away with it as a reliever. Nola is a different pitcher but he has 4 plus pitches which is nothing to balk at. The movement on his FB has the potential to make it a plus-plus if he could get a few extra ticks on the velocity, and his breaking ball is very close, I would put it as a 65 right now.
