  1. Also, I'd personally trade 10 winning seasons or post season births for one championship. Probably more than ten. There's something to be said for winning divisions and making the playoffs....but I'd be totally fine with the Twins/Vikings/Wild being the worst team in all of sports for 10 years if they just won one lousy championship. (I wasn't alive or living in Minnesota for their 2 WS wins)
  2. This is a HUGE exception..... Sure, they're pretty similar if you ignore the MULTIPLE CHAMPIONSHIP SEASONS.....no big deal.
  3. Mauer, compared to the rest of the AL, is 15th in slugging, 9th in OPS, 3rd in OBP, tied for 16th in doubles (which is only 4 away from being 6th, by the way), and 2nd in average. If mauer were a 1B this year, he'd rank 6th in slugging, 3rd in OPS, 1st in OBP, and 3rd in doubles and first in batting average.... I realize not all the stats I listed are necessarily power numbers, but it's pretty obvious the dude can hit, and he is far more than a singles hitter. Maybe that 71.2% is due largely to previous seasons, but this year he is clearly not a "singles hitter." Also, Mark Grace had a career BA of .303 while Mauer's is currently .323. This means that while Grace is producing outs at a higher rate than Mauer, Mauer is getting more hits as singles which is inflating his "singles percentage." I'd take the guy getting on base more than the guy who produces outs more often. This means that the comparison to Mark Grace is flawed when comparing just "singles percentage." You'd need to compare guys with identical batting averages. In terms of this silly "value only at catcher" argument, it's pretty obvious this kind of production would be valuable at any position on the diamond.
  4. This quote is awesome. That is all.
  5. So a guy who usually is among league leaders in OBP, batting average, and OPS has "hardly any value"? That's shocking news to me. Please tell me, what exactly makes a player valuable if being really good at hitting a baseball and getting on base doesn't mean "value" to you? And don't say "he's overpaid" because the Twins have tons of payroll space and can cover the $23 million, no question.
  6. This is apples to oranges. Knee injuries aren't a big deal anymore. You have surgery, you miss time rehabbing, and you come back nearly as good as new. (See: Posey, Peterson). Head injuries aren't something you fix with a surgery and rehab, unfortunately. There's no timetable or step-by-step instructions for returning to 100%. I don't think Mauer is 100% done catching, but he probably should be, for his sake and the team's.
  7. ^This. It amazes me how people lump concussions in with every other injury. You can't "tough out" a head injury. It's a whole different beast altogether. Now the real question: Does Souhan just re-run one of his brilliant "Mauer is soft" articles, or will he actually add new content for the newest edition once he catches wind of Mauer being shut down?
  8. I don't see how it's even a battle at this point. The owner is telling the GM to spend the OWNER's money......As a GM (or any person, really) how can it get any better than that? Other team's GM's have to work on limited funds and would kill for a few extra million to play with. Now it seems Terry Ryan is refusing the spend, or spend very little. Blows my mind.
  9. The same could be said for like 10-20% of the articles posted at TD. "What went wrong this year" "What to do this offseason after a terrible season" "When's the right time to move Mauer to first?" "Fire Gardy" "Time for a new front office" "Why is payroll shrinking" "Plouffe is really frustrating" Plenty of recurring themes when the team is awful and doesn't appear to be doing much about it, sadly.
  10. I disagree. i think it would HEAVILY favor the hitters, at least the very good ones. Think about players that already draw a lot of walks and have a good eye at the plate (AKA Mauer, Cabrera, etc). After a "calibration period" players would KNOW if a ball was a ball or a strike was a strike, even better than they do now. If the human element is removed, then batters just have to sit back and make the pitcher come to them. The very good one would chase balls out of the zone even less. It wouldn't turn a .250 hitter into a .350 hitter, but I feel like the best hitters would feast of a zone they knew with even higher accuracy. In short, it'd force the pitcher to throw a strike and remove the "protecting the plate on 0-2" defensive mentality of the hitters, which I think would lead to fewer strikeouts and more hits.
  11. He slid into first vs the Giant on friday. The throw was low and the first baseman missed it. It hit Punto's ribs and stopped the ball from rolling into the dugout and letting the game-tying run score. If he had stood up, they tie the game and have a shot at winning it. It looks like he's trying hard by sliding into first, but it's not always the best play. And personally, I don't think it's any faster. Just my random 2 cents.
  12. Sano went 11/15 on stolen bases? That's not a lot by any means, but that's a respectable percentage for a guy I think of as a big, slow masher
  13. That didn't stop some people from being absolutely convinced Plouffe had arrived and was a lock for 25-30 homers this year.....How'd that turn out? Dozier needs far more than one season before he can be fully trusted.
  14. I didn't realize payroll was still over $80M this year. I thought it was closer to $60 or $70..... Who knew junk was so expensive these days? That means they're "paying" over $1M per win this year and are still terrible.....Yikes.
  15. Agreed, unless the Twins actually choose a "Captain." In that case they are elected, but usually they are the guys that just emerge by themselves anyway.
  16. The only travesty is the stupidity of this post. Criticizing someone because they have a likable personality? Really? Would you prefer he was a raging alcoholic like Cabrera was a few years ago? Name one player who has single handedly lead his team to a World Series. You can't. There are 8 other hitters and multiple pitchers involved. In case you're unaware, Mauer is a catcher. Catchers don't play 162 games a season. I don't even know why I bothered responding to this post.
  17. Agree 100%. There's no such thing as a minor head injury or concussion. We're a million games out, he plays a high risk position, and he clearly is still having symptoms. Sit him down. They have nothing to gain and everything to lose with him pushing to come back to play more meaningless games this season.
  18. I agree with what you said, but am I missing something here? I have always thought that in a few years our outfield would have Buxton in center, Arcia in Right, and then Hicks would move to left to make room for Buxton. Am I forgetting some other Left field prospect we have? By all means keep Hicks playing CF until Buxton passes him, but if he develops as expected he should be able to cover left just fine, shouldn't he?
  19. Except that he wasn't really in front of the plate....The runner probably could have slid and been safe, or thrown a shoulder into the catcher's chest, not dive at his head. As the other posters have said, there's no need for this degree of violence on a play like that. Two careers were at stake over a pointless play.
  20. So both the runner and the catcher walk (crawl?) away with head injuries over one run in one game. I'd be curious to see if either player would say it was worth it afterwards. Call me soft, but I guess I don't get why this is allowed in the game anymore.
  21. ^^^THIS i really don't care if the Twins are on the hook for an injured player's contract. They offered the contract, and it's their money not mine. Moving and protecting Mauer isn't about $$$$ it's about keeping him healthy so he can contribute to the team and help them win (even if he is the only man on the roster worthy of being called a major leaguer)
  22. Morneau has been dealt and seems somewhat unlikely to re-sign in Minnesota during the offseason. For his own sake, I hope it's HIGHLY unlikely he re-signs with the Twins. Listen, I love the guy and will miss him dearly, but he is only 32. He hopefully has 2-3 years in the tank as an average 1B or at least a solid platoon option. He had great years with the Twins and owes them nothing. WHY ON EARTH would he want to rush back to another 90+ loss season with the Twins after he has suffered 3 already??? I assume ( and I may be wrong which destroys my argument completely) that someone would offer him decent money and actually have a shot at playing meaningful baseball games past May 1st, unlike the Twins. As a fan of Justin, I hope he chases the money and joins a contending team for a few years, then maybe rejoins the Twins when he is 35 or 36 for one last hurrah with the twins as a bench bat or platoon option when the Twins are competitive again. No sense in him wasting what baseball he has left in him.
  23. Not 100% related to this thread but I think it sorta fits: What I'm most bummed out about is when this team had a solid core and was a consistent playoff contender (read: winning the crappiest division in baseball) and had Mauer and Morneau healthy, Kubel, Cuddyer, Nathan etc (sorry for not knowing the exact years), they never made a big trade or big FA signing to push them over the hump to try to go deeper into the playoffs. There were rumors of the Twins going after Cliff Lee at the deadline but the Twins backed away because they didn't want to sacrifice their future.....Well, here we are in that future and are sitting in our 3rd 90 loss season. Glad we didn't risk this awesome future we are currently living. I realize making a trade doesn't guarantee playoff success, but I'd understand a few down years as a result of going big more so than I understand 3+ crappy years after being conservative to protect "the future." Anyone remember what prospects were being considered for trade bait for Lee? I cannot recall, but I'm guessing none of them panned out or are currently likely to be contributing to the MLB club any time soon.
  24. You're forgetting that this is his first major head injury. They are a different beast altogether. Ask Morneau which type of injury takes a bigger toll on the hitter: body injuries or concussions? My money is on concussions. I'd rather the Twins move Mauer to first 1 or 2 seasons too early than 1 single inning too late.
  25. Not to be rude, but who cares? It's just a number next to their name on a list somewhere. Both are very good players. Being ranked 1-2, 2-1, 9-10, or 99-100 doesn't really change anything about them or their futures anyway. As the previous poster said it depends on whether you like raw power and adequate defense, or a player who has a chance to be above average at 5 skills.
