Ugh, mea culpa. I could have gone on to say, I probably have about the same view as Ryan seems to, about the advisability of trying to acquire an established ace. Most such opportunities aren't worth it. Only when I had a team already at the 90-win plateau, would I consider it; I wouldn't do it to help get to that 90-win level. The 2016 Twins don't profile to me as that team. I just was bothered by his preference to re-position the discussion to use the other common meaning of the term, namely the best starting pitcher on the team, AKA "de facto ace". Every team has one, doesn't mean anything. In his position, I probably would attempt the same tactic though. Why get bogged down re-arguing every year about something he has no intention of doing.

You ended his quote here, but what he went on to say kind of bugged me. That waters down what most people think of as ace, to be innings eater. I loved Radke, especially his grit that final season, but on most teams he'd be their innings eater - someone you feel "pretty good about" and will keep you in the game, but isn't expected to shut anyone down on even a semi-regular basis. I imagine Ryan would love to develop an ace, but he'll never go out and acquire an established one. Acquisitions will always be innings eaters, judging by the way he pivoted on that question.

How dangerous does it get, if you happen to have two guys on the team who say that?

Who is this Duensing you speak of? I see no one by that name on the 40-man roster. http://www.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=min

Love the title page. Kudos! Now on to page two... I'll let you know.

All tautologies are tautologies.* Point well-taken that organizational strength shouldn't creep in. Still, hypothetical trading seems like a good starting point. How about, which player would return more in a trade with an average GM? That's my baseline guess, modified only if I think a player is severely under- or over-rated generally. * Source: link

Hope? In the month of November? Fool me 53 times, shame on you; fool me 54 times, shame on me.

Kennys can be kind of a wise guy, can't he?

In some localities Granny can be in her thirties when the first grandchild shows up. The name might sound to them about like Auntie would to me. I wouldn't be too quick to settle into the rocking chair in that eventuality.

I took it more as him being a smart gambler who knows how to set a line to get the action he wants. I suddenly would not go up against him. / edit - I see that Seth responded simultaneously along similar lines

I'm not ready to rank Jay that highly just yet. It's a gamble to convert him back to a starter and that gamble hasn't even begun, since he pitched only an inning or so at a time for us. I suppose he has a fairly high floor as a reliever, but that doesn't scream #5 to me, either. I'm not sure I'm ready to anoint him top-10, even. A year from now, probably, yeah.

You couldn't quite pull the trigger on a headline of "More? Neau.", John? Adding Morneau never even crossed my mind. As Brock just said, we already have a full slate of players about whom the plan seems to be "and if all else fails, we can DH him."

#8 seems like a very appropriate place for a guy who has finished AA and maintains his ceiling of "corner outfield starter for a decade, maybe some all-star appearances". It's just the low low floor that remains worrisome.

I am very high on Polanco's eventual success in the majors, but it's not clear to me his bat is ready right now. It's fun to joke around about his stellar major league numbers, but included in the joke needs to be the .385 BABIP that they're probably built upon. I'm more persuaded, by his AA numbers, that a year in AAA will do him a world of good, rather than force-feed him in the majors. And of course, he's going to have to sort out for himself whether he has the makings of a shortstop's arm - my sense from watching him is he's sacrificing some zip in favor of directional accuracy, but too many bounced throws means it's not working, and if he can't cut loose on his throws and have them go where he intends then it's second base for him. This area of development is also something that seems better suited for AAA time than on the 25-man MLB roster.

Sorry, but posts at this site accusing another poster of being a bigot just beg to be removed. I should add, discussion of TD policy and/or moderator actions belongs more properly in the About MinnCentric forum area, rather than further disrupt topical discussions. / you also essentially Godwin-ed yourself in the same post. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law

The Twins HoF or the other one somewhere in upstate NY?

Moderator's note: Nick's passing comment about this has led to a re-opening of a discussion that has been hashed and re-hashed here many times over. Please keep your posts civil, and in particular avoid taking it upon yourself to correct the behavior of others. Discussing Torii is fair game (if done with the usual respect expected here), while for a variety of reasons discussing other people just isn't. Posts that amount to bickering will be removed.

If Big Pelf had nine lives staying out of the Twins bullpen, you can bet Alex Meyer will get chance after chance too. If not from the Twins then from a succession of other organizations.

Ay caramba. None of these guys have much of a chance of being pried away. Even going further down the list into the 30s and it's tough to imagine... until I come to the name Sonny Gray. Shades of another TD thread.

The right situation being, he turns 24 years of age? (Despite my posts elsewhere casting doubt about his readiness to step in as a starter for 2016, I remain very high on him.)
  25. ashbury
Probably. Guys who look like eventual utility infielders or fourth outfielders, or starting pitchers who will likely have to accept bullpen duty if they want to be in the majors, litter top-20s, even strong lists. Think of it this way. How immensely strong would a farm system be, if the entire top 20 was entirely made up of "this guy projects as a starting first baseman, this guy projects as a starting second baseman, this guy projects as a front line starting pitcher, this guy..."? Practically a whole new competitive 25-man roster, including a few apparently qualified players riding the pine, if you'll just wait a few years. Top 10, I'm probably with you, regarding backup catchers.
