  1. My bad for not fielding the short-hop cleanly. Quoting the last line from Parker's posting would have been enough to trigger my evidently-malfunctioning laff-o-meter.
  2. Most guys not named Barry Bonds do. (OK, OK, you just made a typo and meant OPS.) Ironically, a lack of SLG likely affects the OBP. Without power, he surely faces more pitches in the strike zone, since his opponents will think "why risk walking him, if he gets a hit he's only on first base anyway." I'm sure stats exist that confirm or disprove that guess. Admittedly, guys like Jamey Carroll have the same profile and do manage to work pitchers for some walks, so Ben would do well to pick Jamey's brain, but I have to believe there's a limit when you absolutely won't hit it over the fence when the pitch is down the middle and even ringing doubles are scarce. Honestly, with his speed he should be getting doubles just through hustle, so it's evident that the ball is coming off his bat so weakly that no pitcher has to fear giving him pitches in the strike zone. Span is no masher, but demonstrates enough power that pitchers must be careful, and his OBP reflects this, making him a very valuable major league hitter. Exactly. This isn't like the AJ trade that was made in order to get an even better player into the lineup. This is to accept a hopefully small downgrade at one position in exchange for a larger upgrade elsewhere - in this case the "where" being "elsed" is also along the time dimension as well as the playing position.
  3. Someone claimed in rule 5 has to stay with the team the full season, don't they? Would seem odd not to take them to spring training, then.
  4. In addition to trading away Span for a young'un, they also outrighted (and lost) Thomas Fields, right? Opening up 3 roster spaces, for what? Three Rule-5 picks? A trade of someone like Morneau for four MLB-ready players? Two imminent free agent pitchers plus a Rule-5? With the draft only days away (Dec 6?), I don't see the need to free up so much space unless some slam-dunk move is in the pipeline. Do the rules require some lead time, as opposed to outrighting someone like Guerra on the same day that a transaction for someone fitting their plans better occurs?
  5. I think Ben Revere's arm is kind of weak for CF. As long as we're just throwing random stuff out there.
  6. Late to the party here tonight, but I'll chime in that this is the kind of trade I was hoping for - a high ceiling pitcher in exchange for an average MLB-proven CFer. I was kind of hoping for a second prospect (maybe in exchange for a throw-in by the Twins), but this is OK. As always, I have no fundamental insight into prospects so as armchair GM I have to trust "my" scouts on the choice of the pitcher to trade for. The loss of Span frees up a little money that can be spent (with money already earmarked) on pitching to keep 2013-14 from being a disaster that would harm cashflow for when they are ready to compete again in 2015 or so. Should be an interesting winter, with this as the opening salvo.
  7. You put Butera in the rotation and let Frankie be the 3rd catcher.
  8. Getting rid of the banner ads that support this free site would be better than a Q&A with a beat writer? Getting rid of the banner ads that start putting out sound without being asked to, would be OK in my book.
  9. I think this is obviously correct, but leaves unstated there are multiple routes to go regarding free agency. We can aim for FA talent who will still be prime contributors to a pennant-winning 2015 squad. Or, we can obtain younger talent by some other route (trades, mainly, if prime talent is the aim) who won't be ready until 2015, and use FA to supplement the 2013-4 squads so that further loss in the fan base can be avoided and let those contracts run out when the young'uns are scheduled to arrive. (A combination of these two approaches is quite viable, of course.) Also, as you allude, it's not necessary to completely stock up for 2015 this winter, so it can be phased over the coming three offseasons - there is not much value in paying prime talent for 2013, in and of itself. I trust that Terry Ryan has the long term plan in place (longer than 2015, naturally), and it will be interesting to watch the deals as they unfold. Stopgap moves by themselves are not a cause for despair - that is basically what Ryan accomplished last winter and they were necessary. What would be deadly is if the only moves going forward look like stopgaps to get us to 2015, without the moves that actually pertain to success in 2015 and beyond.
  10. As further evidence, take a look at any baseball-reference.com's list of, say, second or third round draft picks from around a decade ago - long enough ago to be pretty sure who's ever going to make it to the majors. Even the bottom half of the first round is sobering to look at in retrospect. Pretty slim pickings most years - lots of cups of coffee, a few solid role-players, not lots of cumulative WAR.
  11. I was joking in the first place - "Free Anthony Slama" is a constant refrain here - and your response was in line with my actual thinking as well, leading me to think *I* was coming across as trolling for serious responses.
  12. Anthony Slama. I wouldnt refer to Slama as a prospect anymore. I dont think anyone should have high expectations for him anymore either. Seems like he is and always be just a good minor league pitcher. A fine line between trying for a quick joke and trolling. Maybe I eradicated that line, this time.
  13. > If it was up to me, I would start him in Cedar Rapids and play it by ear from there. Get ready for more Cedar Rapids Kernels puns this upcoming season!
  14. Parker's postings are always worth seeking out. Twins were losing in two out of three of the screenshots. Sounds about right.
  15. If man is still alive. If woman can survive.
  16. One of those players signed a $16,000,000.00 contract. Keep in mind, those are Canadian dollars. $1CDN = $0.99US. Or maybe the other way around.
  17. Because the Twins gave up on him not too long ago, and now they'd be trading top prospects for the guy.
  18. 2017 - GM Nate Silver wins Executive Of The Year award.
  19. Good-field/no-hit infielders and good-field/no-power outfielders should rarely cost more than a waiver-wire pickup,, or a sketchy minor-league prospect in trade if he's really solid, and should not be paid more than $1M or so unless you're a deep-pockets team. I wish Casilla nothing but good luck in the rest of his career but his time with the Twins was clearly up.
  20. Lawyers in Ohio, Florida, or other close states could easily give Terry Ryan a cushion of a few extra days or even weeks to get that talent signed.
  21. Every single reliever, the day he was drafted.
  22. This.
