  1. I liked it quite a bit - I appreciated how it navigated telling a story through the medium of film and taking advantages of the medium. Lots of that tasty magical realism. I want to find a copy of that Raymond Carver short story that was adapted into the play within the movie.
  2. My guess is that these decisions were already made weeks ago by Terry Ryan, and he has kept his cards close to his vest. Nuñez and Duensing should both be able to find work somewhere, I think they don't fit in the Twins' plans in the short term. Nothing particularly wrong with either guy, just that they are taking up roster space and have not created enough separation from their peers to be retained over adding more of the young guys from the farm system. What is the contract status of the three Chris' ? Are they already under contract for 2015, or do they have to be extended a contract by Tuesday as well (arb eligible or not)? Herrmann, Colabello, Parmelee could all be packing their bags and I think the Twins would be able to replace their contributions with either FA signings or with promotions to guys like Rosario.
  3. I think Craig is a 1B that was playing out of position in StL and Boston... if the Red Sox trade him, it'll probably be to a team looking to fill a need at 1B.
  4. I think they knew too much - or had enough info that pointed to Tomas as being not worth the hype that they were not interested in taking this specific risk. Decisions to not sign or offer a competitve bid for these players has become a cumulative indictment of the Twins front office. It's hard to blame people for thinking that, and at times I lean that way too. In my opinion, the Twins didn't look at Tomas and think that they had more reason to sign him because they didn't sign Abreu, Puig, Cespedes or Rusney Castillo. I think they looked at Tomas and thought, what would it cost to sign him, and is it worth it to the team to spend it on him. With Tomas, I think the Diamondbacks are getting a slightly older version of Oswaldo Arcia - a Corner outfielder with power and a questionable glove.
  5. I think Plouffe says yes to that. I think the Twins would say maybe to that. Nice cost certainty for Plouffe, and some security. The Twins like it because ... They get a fixture at third base? It's already been mentioned multiple times, but that Sano fellow seems poised to play in the majors in the not -too-distant future. Maybe he takes over at third. Maybe Sano gets relocated to 1B, or RF or LF... but he's probably going to be given every opportunity to stick at the hot corner. It's easy to say now that the Twins won't need Plouffe in 4-5 seasons. If I were the Twins, I wouldn't be in a hurry to extend his contract - he's a valuable piece, but he's still under team control. I'm less certain that Plouffe would get arbitration raises as high as Dozier will, so I lean towards an extension for Dozier more so than for Plouffe. Even though it's easy to say, it's not a certainty that Sano will stick at 3B and thrive there. The upside is that Plouffe is a solid piece that won't break the bank. By the time this hypothetical extension is over, Plouffe should still be producing at an acceptable level. To me, the Dozier extension was a yes-yes win-win. Plouffe is a bit trickier to judge.
  6. Maybe Robbie Alomar will come in and be the 1st Base Coach - Roberto Kelly would be a good choice too - Kelly even played for the Twins for a season, so they've got that going for them. I'd really like the last coaching vacancy to be filled by someone that can help the OF defensively.
  7. Hey, remember that Torii signed with LAA on Thanksgiving oh so many years ago? If the Twins agree to a deal with Torii tomorrow, that would be quite the full circle.
  8. Diamondbacks got him! http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/11/26/yasmany-tomas-signs-a-six-year-deal-with-the-diamondbacks/
  9. One sticking point is that the Twins would want to be in playoff contention to make a big hit on the farm for just one guy coming back. The Phillies would be looking for a lot of young cost controlled talent. The Twins have a fairly deep system, this is true. It's hard to say what the Phillies would covet from the Twins org - I think they'd want guys that could thrive in Philly, so a guy like Vargas (or even Sano) might not be their first choice because the NL has a greater need for positional flexibility. I think the Twins would want more than one player to come back to trade away that much talent at once. I could see them going for Hamels in exchange for that list if the Phils also included another ML player. I'm not sure there's a match there, and Hamels would have to agree to the trade. It's worth a discussion just because the Twins could really use an ace like Hamels.
  10. All of the rumors I've read regarding Phillies players is that the GM over there has been asking for a ton in return - I think the Twins could really use Cole Hamels in the rotation - my guess is that they can't afford the prospects it would take for Amaro to agree to the trade. I say that only because I get the sense from the Red Sox pursuit of Hamels that the Phillies want more than the Red Sox are willing to deal. I don't know that the Phillies really want to trade Hamels away, it would probably take a serious overpay to get him. I'm not sure that any team would mortgage their farm system enough to shake him loose.
  11. It worked out really well for the Twins on the Span deal, not so much with Nick Blackburn - I think those might be the two extremes. To me it boils down to whether Dozier can be reasonably expected to stay healthy and productive for the next 2-3 years. The original post proposal would be totally worth it at that point. Had Span not gotten that concussion, I think he might have netted the Twins even more in trade than they got from the Nationals.
  12. "Top performing pitcher" from the KIA Tigers' perspective I should have said - that's a good point. I think the market showed what MLB teams felt these two pitchers were going to be worth.
  13. Assuming he doesn't suffer a major injury, Dozier would definitely make more on a FA contract than any extension offered this offseason. The value of the contract in a trade is worth considering.
  14. Hunter doesn't have to be as bad as we think to be as bad as he is. He's a DH at this point and a liability everywhere else on the field. It's just the reality of the situation - he's not a ML-level defensive outfielder anymore. Doesn't mean he's a bad player or a bad person, he just shouldn't be a primary target for a team that needs better OF defense. I'd rather have Rosario/Hicks/Schafer/Arcia in the outfield than play another guy on the wrong side of 35 or a player that should only play 1B or DH (like Parmelee or Colabello).
  15. I think it's very team friendly - it reminds me a little of the contract extension that Denard Span signed with the Twins. The added benefit of a team friendly contract is that it is also a more appealing trade chip. The Twins would be fortunate if Dozier signed it, because if he's good for the length of it, he'd make more in Arb, and more in that 1st FA year. I don't think the Twins would want to have him under contract for much longer than this, though... I think Dozier might politely decline that offer this year, though.
  16. I think the team was hoping for more than the other KBO pitcher received from the Padres, which was in the neighborhood of $2MM - they must have thought that the league's top performing pitcher would earn a higher bid, but it didn't turn out that way.
  17. I think a player with Dan Gladden's 1987-1991 skills would be a great addition in LF for the 2015 Twins. He was a decent fielder then and while he didn't have a bat anywhere close to his teammates like Bruno and Kirby, he wasn't a liability at the plate. 25 steals a year, didn't get caught too much... That's the kind of player the Twins should be trying to acquire. Maybe Jordan Schafer is already that guy... I dunno. I think Torii could still hit just fine (and be an upgrade in that department for the Twins), but defensively he just doesn't have it anymore and honestly that's more important for the Twins right now. They have hitters throughout the lineup, theyt really need defense and pitching. Torii brings a lot to the table, and while I wouldn't be opposed to a reunion, I feel like there are still lots of options out there that would be better fits for the 2015 and beyond Twins.
  18. Oh, well, back to focusing on Masterson, Shields, Ervin Santana, etc., and trades - Really hoping the Twins find some talented Starting Pitching to add to the rotation this offseason.
  19. As long as he's not pinch running
  20. My guess is that Milone is the most likely to be retained now, since the Twins have a really good idea of what Duensing brings to the table. But they might keep both lefties, because hey, lefties!
  21. or possibly they offered Vavra the job right away and he's been debating it given his injury history from last year.
  22. Make way for Mike Pelfrey, Long Reliever!
  23. Sweet - I don't have to change my avatar. If they were just going to hire Vavra, why didn't they announce this a long time ago?
  24. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2014/10/13/6894429/17th-round-195-homers-the-career-of-josh-willingham-prospect-retrospective Some great insight from John Sickels, old scouting reports of Willingham and a nice write-up overall. His best season was as a Twin, and I still remember being very happy to hear that he signed with the Twins. Glad he had a chance to go to the World Series this year, I bet that was a big thrill for him!
  25. He won his league's Cy Young award - I think he'd be the Twins' 2nd or 3rd best starting Pitcher in 2015 (assuming they don't sign anyone else). Hughes will be better, and hopefully either Gibson, May, or Meyer would be #2.
