  1. Yes! Excellent point. Coming back after possible contraction with that homer was awesome. I wonder what Jones thinks about that moment and if contraction was on his mind at all as he rounded the bases.
  2. in 2002 he hit a leadoff homer and then a three run homer later in the same game to put the Twins up 7-6 http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/KCA/KCA200204010.shtml His first HRs in 2000, 2001 and 2002 were all against the Royals, but the 2002 ones were on Opening Day.
  3. If the Giants want to do another one of those "Liriano/Nathan/BOOF for A.J." deals, by all means.
  4. Has this book been mentioned yet? http://www.amazon.com/The-Baseball-Codes-Beanballs-Bench-Clearing/dp/030727862X The Baseball Codes: Beanballs, Sign Stealing, and Bench-Clearing Brawls: The Unwritten Rules of America's Pastime Long title, but it was a pretty quick read and had a lot of really great tidbits. The kind of twisted logic that goes into the game was frustrating to read some times, but I appreciated the candor of the various players interviewed for the book. Some of the stories are pretty hilarious, Bert Blyleven's patented hotfoot prank is featured in one chapter.
  5. Even though it's against the Twins, that's such a great GIF - I mean, If I were Tom Lawless and I hit a Homer in the World Series, I would probably do the same thing. When would he ever in his life get that opportunity again? (yeah yeah unwritten rules, act like you've been there before, etc etc.) To that point in his MLB career he'd only hit one homer. He only managed one more after that, in 1988. I looked it up and Lawless played his entire MLB career without being hit by a pitch once - so if there was payback, it wasn't on him. Jim Lindeman did get plunked by Joe Niekro later in that same game, though the score was still close enough that it was likely an accident and not revenge. Lawless faced Viola again in game 7 of the series, and went 0-3. That homer was the only hit Lawless managed against Viola in 10 career plate appearances.
  6. Well, I took the plunge and bought a ticket for Saturday. If my fingers are fast enough tomorrow, I'll be hitting up the Meltdown as well. Any suggestions about things to do at TwinsFest that I might not notice? What do people enjoy the most about going to TwinsFest?
  7. CB radio for me. Hammer Down! j/k. I will listen to the radio for Twins Games, but otherwise I'm listening to playlists of music I know I like, either off my iPod or on Spotify. I read / listen to new (or at least new to me) stuff online via several blogs.
  8. Orioles banking on that Delmon playoff luck charm!
  9. The story goes that as a rookie a few vets tried to intimidate Williams by beaning him and/or throwing brush back pitches high and tight. There were a couple well-documented instances in which he was brushed back and responded by hitting home runs or long doubles in his next at bat or later in same at-bat, so the book on Williams became that hitting him or pitching inside just made him better.
  10. I would be really surprised if agents don't mention clients in this situation when talking to teams about guys that are actually free agents. Boyer's agent and the teams he's talking to in course of a regular business day might not admit to it, but if he's doing the best he can for his client, he's gauging interest from other teams during spring training.
  11. Oh yeah! I had forgotten about that too!
  12. Ah, I should have phrased that more carefully, I was wondering what the "threat" was that Kennys allegedly made on Sunday. As in, was the threat that he was going to withdraw the earlier request for an extra week? In any case, what we know is that Baerga benched the teams' top three players for some reason, and then the team fired Baerga (possibly/probably for benching three top players in a playoff race). Baerga was the league's "manager of the year" last year, so it's not like he's some scrub. Maybe the three guys did something to "disrespect" Baerga and he tried to make an example of them. Vargas could have been the instigator of this, or just happened to be in the same room as the player that started whatever it was. Maybe they were out too late, maybe they broke an unwritten rule of some kind... Like you said, we'll probably never know. I think it's worth the Twins having a casual conversation with Vargas, but certainly nothing to be too concerned about.
  13. Makes sense, but here's a fun bit of trivia that I didn't realize: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/105954516/john-smoltz-makes-hall-of-fame-history-post-tommy-john-surgery Smoltz is the first Hall Of Famer to have had Tommy John Surgery.
  14. The neat thing to me about Vargas is that he is a switch hitter and crushes the ball from both sides. He didn't hit many HRs right handed - but I can still picture the one he hit against the White Sox late last year at Target Field. It was a distinctive sound and the ball was in the stands in no time at all. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/6479266/v35935381/cws-min-vargas-drills-a-no-doubter-to-left-field He's a fun player to watch, I hope he keeps adjusting to the league as it adjusts to him.
  15. Vargas is probably the youngest of the three "pillars" mentioned above, yeah? I wonder what Vargas actually said or did that led to the article stating that Vargas "threatened to leave the team." Was it that Vargas was saying he wouldn't ask for the extra time from the Twins? Was it really about Baerga? This is a tricky thing about translation and sports reporting. Maybe the reporter read something into statements by players (including Vargas) about Baerga's managerial style. Then take the story as written by the reporter and translate it from one language to another ... There was no direct quote from Vargas in the article. So.. we don't know what he said, to whom, in what context. Was he bashing Baerga? Was he concerned that the team was losing and if they lost again their season would be over? We're reading the sports reporters' version of the events, translated from Spanish. It could have gone down exactly like it is implied (Vargas and two teammates conspired to get Baerga fired), or maybe it was not anything like that at all. I don't think the firing of Baerga should put Vargas in a negative light, nor do I think Molitor or any of the Twins' coaches should have to worry about Vargas' attitude as a Twin. They might want to have a chat with him during Spring training and get his side of the story, but I don't see enough info to make Vargas (or Baerga) a villain.
  16. not sure I can mail that across state lines . . .
  17. The BBWAA folks that wanted to do so made their choices public here: http://bbwaa.com/15-hof-ballots/
  18. April 6th in Detroit. Home Opener one week later, April 13th.
  19. This might be closer to the "never" prediction than "never" - also I hope it happens exactly like this.
  20. Rivera is next level - I think Hoffman is an easy choice for Hall of Fame, but yes Mariano's resume is ridiculous. I think Hoffman might not make it in his first year, but I think he's better than most of the relievers in the Hall of Fame already.
  21. If he doesn't start a game this year in CF, all those guessing so will share the prize.
  22. And if a TD member's balky knee starts to ache, an infielder might be moving to the outfield that day. "I can always tell when one of the Eduardos is shagging flyballs - also, it's going to rain on Tuesdee"
