  1. Slama would be crazy to re-sign with the Twins once he's a free agent. They obviously have never believed in him. I predict he's signed by the A's, and I hope he does well there.
  2. He's not going to make them winners this year, and he's not going to help make them winners in the future. But if he makes people smile in an otherwise dreary year, that's not bad. If he started at DH too much and kept people like Parmalee from getting at-bats, that would be a problem. But seeing Thome coming off the bench to pinch hit every now and then might provide a few much-needed bright spots. So wouldn't mind either way. Signing Podsednik, though, would make me scream.
  3. Good point. I bet there isn't a team in the league that wouldn't have signed him to this deal. But the Twins offer him the best shot and making the major league rotation. No one would give him serious money, but all he's really looking for at this point is a showcase. They should get as many of these guys as they can. Bring on Bedard and Webb!
  4. I agree with everything you say, Nick, and it's true -- it's a much better pickup than Kevin Correia. But "better than a two-year, ten-million-dollar contract to a below average National League pitcher" is a pretty low standard to beat. Shouldn't be be going for, "offers at least a chance of helping the Twins win, either now or in the future"?
  5. Why sign two good pitchers? I think the premise was they were trying to contend. Sure they can use castoffs and not-ready minor leaguers; they did that the past two years. But they wouldn't very likely contend. Personally, though, I'd rather wait another year or two than take on a Grienke type contract. If that didn't work out, they'd be worse off than they are now. I prefer the approach of stockpiling young pitching shown by the Span and Revere trades. I'd keep doing that and hope to build a playoff-worthy rotation the way the A's did. If they could get similar talent for Morneau and WIllingham, the future could become very bright by 2014.
  6. Can anyone understand this post???? Yeah I think he's just saying proceed with caution with Japanese players and scout them better than we did Nishioka. I like the idea of gambling on a young flamethrower more than an aging star -- the upside is just as high, without the guaranteed downside of a hundred million dollar contract
  7. Sniff. The selfless generosity. They're all heart. They were still high on his future, but they loved him so much they let him go.
  8. Actually I don't think he got shrewed THAT bad...
  9. "I would say now is not the time to trade either guy. Let contending teams become more and more desperate toward the deadline and drive up the value of our assets." That may be true in general but there are risks. The Jays just lost three pitchers in a week, and the chances of them mortgaging their future to go for it this year have to have dropped precipitously.
  10. I'm a little worried that the recent respectable streak is built on a mirage. I agree the offense and bullpen seem fine, but remain very concerned about starting pitching. Can we really expect the string of quality starts from marginal minor league starters to continue? Is there any reason to be confident about the health and consistent performance of the veterans? I would not be surprised to see the starting pitching collapse into wretchedness again. I hope not, but it's hard to predict .500 ball for the rest of the season with this rotation.
  11. Good point about Willingham's slow fielding on the Pujols rbi. He didn't seem in any hurry to throw. I don't see why that Bourjos fly wasn't catchable though. Willingham wasn't running hard, he just misjudged it. I think Revere would have caught it.
  12. That Levi Michael -- what a bust!
  13. I'd like this idea if we could watch the AAA team on TV, instead of the MLB team.
