Can you elaborate on that? He makes ALL of the routine plays. As I pointed out before he has the best fielding % in all of baseball for 1st basemen. I have seen him stretched out making nice plays. His throws to 2nd have been great and his height makes him a great target. He is easily at least average defensively so I will disregard that comment. Where is he lacking in your opinion that is keeping him from being considered elite?

Not impressed by Escobar's glove at all this last series so am still thinking Santana will have that spot for the future but if Hicks, Rosario or Kepler don't develop I would want Santana out there for his speed and arm. Either way I would not want Mauer and Arcia out there at the same time so Mauer sticks at 1st. If Pinto is a better hitter than Vargas then DH, pinch hitter, backup catcher makes sense. If he is not a better hitter than Vargas then pinch hitter, backup catcher still makes sense. Don't we want a strong bench? I would never platoon Arcia and Pinto but a platoon of Arcia and Hicks would make sense.

Mauer has one error on the year and has shown pretty good range helped by his size. I know a lot more is involved than just errors. Range and also number of bad throws that are scooped or flagged down enter into it. Let me rephrase though. Joe has a fielding % of .999 which is as good or better than every gold glover in the history of the award except for Youkalis in 2007. For example, last year's Gold Glove winner had 8 errors and 6 or 7 errors is common for GG winners. Mauer has one. It is the best fielding % of all 1st basemen in all of baseball that have played more than 30 games. Not bad for his 1st year.

Article: Injuries Have Hurt Prospects' Development

Also, this kind of analysis does little without a comparison to all the other teams. It is possible that there are fan bases of 20 other teams that think their team is snake bit.- 22 replies

Article: Injuries Have Hurt Prospects' Development
Dantes929 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The thing is, I think it is a 50/50 proposition (or whatever ratio) whether they are on innings limits for the season, pitch limits for a game or have no limits at all. As far as I can see Meyer has about the same chance for injury in his 2nd Spring Training start as he would in his 170th inning this year if he were allowed to go that far. Skip starts during the season if there is fatigue or other issues but the limits are just arbitrary and seem to have no effect. From all I have heard and read the Twins are as good as any other organization in trying to protect the arms and there is no proof at all that it has any effect. Blyleven could maybe have thrown every third day for 20 years but was probably just as likely to have arm issues after his first month. Not too many pitches in an inning, and maybe limits after surgery. Otherwise just common sense rather than organizational protocols.- 22 replies

Article: Suddenly, Shortstops!
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting conundrum. Maybe Santana is where he needs to be right now. An outfield with Buxton and Santana is certainly intriguing. Or Santana is also at a high value right now (think Casilla after his great stretch before injury in 2008) and maybe could get a top pitching prospect. I don't think anyone is suggesting trade Escobar for utility player value but if they get an offer commiserate with a top 10 shortstop they should consider it It is not so far fetched. There are currently only 7 qualifying shortstops with an OPS over .700. Think of how many years the Twins were looking for just this kind of guy. If they don't get a high offer then the whole point is moot. You can't sell high if no one is willing to buy high. -
Article: Arcia, Vargas and Rebellion
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As far as I can tell Arcia has gotten better by toning his swing down, working counts better and going wih the pitch more. Again, it is not pulling the ball that is the problem. Its trying to pull the ball. Has anyone seen Arcia try to pull a low outside breaking ball against a left hander? Vargas is better off because he is a switch hitter but still he has had success going with the pitch also rather than trying to pull everything. Step toward the pitcher and pull naturally. Is using ALL fields really so bad? Cabrerra and Trout (and Ortiz btw) seem to do all right with that approach. -
32 8 inning shutouts would at worst result in a 0-0 record but I would love to see Gibson test your theory. I am guessing he would be about 30-0. I don't think W-L record is the most meaningful stat but I don't think it is meaningless either. Yes, baseball is a team game. No one believes that more than me but at the same time there is a reason they attached that stat to pitchers in the first place. It is way more meaningful than W-L records of managers IMO. Pitchers simply have more effect on a game than any other player. At the end of the day did you hold the other team to fewer runs than the other guy did given the conditions of the day. Over time if you had a great ERA, SO/9, quality starts, WHIP, etc it will be reflected in your record and vice versa. Of course there are outfliers to every stat. Liriano's best SO/9 since 2006 he was 3-10 with a 5.34 ERA. Maddux and Buehrle had poor SO/9 but excellent SO/BB which is the stat I prefer but there are anomalies there as well. People say there are times when you just need a strikeout and I will respond by saying a ground ball to 3rd or the pitcher is almost always better if there are guys on base. I look at most stats but the ones I look at most are still ERA and quality start %. Others will have favorite categories but they are mostly all interrelated.

Article: The Future of Twins' Catchers

"Pitchers are going to be able to attack him as he moves up the ladder especially if he doesn't hit for more power" I don't know what that means. How are they going to attack him and how would it be different if he did have power?- 18 replies

This would be great if it actually worked. Have the Twins protected any arms? We seem to have at least the normal amount of injuries. I don't even know why the 150 inning limit is relevant. Where is the science that says this is protecting his arm. He is as likely to have an injury in his first week of spring training as he is on inning 200 this year.
-
Rotation in 2015 should be Meyer, May, Hughes, Gibson and Milone with Nolasco involved somehow (or traded). Milone has a lifetime 3.84 ERA and a current year ERA of 3.55 in the American League. Nolasco has a 4.49 career ERA in the National League and current year ERA of 5.9. Milone is a lefty with slow stuff that would play very well before or after Meyer in the rotation. Twins could eat a lot of salary in Pelfrey and Nolasco but who really cares. They were mainly insurance against Meyer and May flopping. Payroll is going to be low even with those salaries because the young guys don't make the really big bucks.
-
I'm all for protecting arms if protecting arms actually worked. Nothing I have read supports the notion that 90 pitch games or 150 inning limits has any effect whatsoever. Shut Meyer down and he is just as likely to need surgery after his 3rd spring training start next year as he is if they let him pitch to 200 innings this year. Where's the science that "protecting" arms works? Makes as much sense to shut Nolasco down as it does Meyer. Meyer should have at least 2 starts with the Twins already. I supported the Pino promotion and while he has been adequate he should not be guaranteed starts at this point. I didn't care for the Johnson promotion but really didn't like the Darnell promotion. He started out hot this season but was trending down. 2 of Meyer, May and Milone and preferably all 3 should be in rotation in the next 10 days.

Parmalee not far behind that .273 mark you mentioned at .265. -
On offense OBP is king to me so it makes sense that on defense if you give up fewer hits you have more of a cushion so to speak to walk more batters. The reverse is somewhat true also that the fewer you walk the more hits you can give up. Its why I defended the "pitch to contact" staff a half dozen years ago. They gave up the least walks in the majors by a ridiculous amount which of course also speaks to control within the strike zone. The staff of recent years has been middle of the road in walks, and bottom of the league for strikeouts which speak for both lack of control in and out of the strike zone as well as basic lack of "stuff". Bottom line is that someone is going to be promoted this week. If Milone was just coming off his stretch of 11 excellent starts before his demotion I would say he was the guy. If May hadn't gotten hurt he should be the guy. As it stands right now Meyer should be the guy and if they decide to bring Pino down and promote either May or Milone that would be all right also.

BTW, if you are looking up Casilla's stats in 2008 they don't tell the whole story. He was fantastic before his hand injury sidelined him for 2 weeks and he never got his mojo back. -

The last time a guy came up from the minors to totally exceed expectations was probably Scot Diamond Valencia was the guy before that and Casilla in 2008 might qualify. All of these guys should be cautionary tales in our expectations of Santana. I really like the guy but he is hitting 52 points better in the majors than he did in the minors. That is not normally sustainable. How would we feel about him if he were hitting .273 right now? -
I have defended the Twins promotions of starting pitchers all season. Not in the sense of what I would have done or what I would have liked to see done but just as defendable. If Darnell had been promoted a month earlier I would have defended that as well. That wasn't the case. Meyer should have had two starts already with the Twins.

Mediocre results in one game should not be enough to derail May but Meyer has been pitching better than May for the last half dozen starts. I don't think Pino has been too bad but hasn't done well enough to nail down more starts either, especially considering how well Milone was doing when he was demoted. Expecting to see one and hopefully two of Meyer, May and Milone in the next week. I assume we put Correia on waivers. Kind of hope Nolasco is shut down.

I can and have argued that Pino's promotion was deserved but cannot make a case for Johnson and Darnell. Meyer should have been up by now (though May probably deserves it as much or more). In case you think the Twins are the only ones making questionable decisions, in his past 11 starts Milone has a 6-0 record with a 2.64 ERA in the major leagues and was demoted. I would much rather see Meyer or May promoted next and soon but I suspect it will be Milone.

Article: Five Things To Know About Tommy Milone
Dantes929 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
8 quality starts in his last 11. ERA went from 5.6 to 3.55 and he went 6-0 in that time frame. Has anyone every been less deserving of a demotion than he was? -
When I said promote Hicks I meant to the Twins. I just have a hard time believing they let Fuld go and not replace his defense. If promoted to the Twins there will be posters who complain about it because he has not succeeded there in the past. Personally, I liked him up there and while his average was terrible OBP is king for me and his was very good for a #9 hitter.

Article: Today's Official Trade Deadline Discussion
Dantes929 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Milone's resume and numbers only look mediocre on the very best staff's. On most teams they would look very solid. 8 quality starts and 6-0 in his last 11 starts. -

Dantes929 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If you have built from trades of your existing players and from your farm system then you have "built from within". Milone at 3.8 ERA in the American league has a better career resume than Nolasco, much less Pelfrey and Correia. 3.8 AL ERA for career and 3.55 ERA this year do not make him median or a 4th or 5th starter. If he even gives us his career ERA it is at minimum solid 3. It would put him around 55 among starters in all of baseball which consist of 30 teams so you can do the math. Plus we know his ERA as an AL pitcher puts him above similar or better NL ERA's. If May and Meyer pan out to be 4 ERA or better guys this could be more than just a solid rotation.
