  1. "Unfortunately, it looks like the offense is going to be trouble going forward until Buxton and Gordon get here, which is two or three years away realistically." I'm thinking more Rosario and Vergas this year and Buxton and Sano for next year. I never really thought there was that much difference between Nolasco, Correia and Pelfrey. All had that 4.3 to 4.5 National League ERA. I have no objection to those type of ERAs but, except for Correia they have not matched those numbers in the AL. Correia has been pitching great lately and if Pino can't sustain his initial success we have May and if not him then Logan, Johnson and Meyer with Berrios maybe not so far behind. World of difference from 2011 when we were promoting guys who were terrible in the minors. At least now when guys make the leap, whether they stick in the majors or not, they are earning the promotions.
  2. Agree to disagree. Powerful guys that square up the ball more often hit more homers but anyone that squares it up more often gets more hits. Mauer is a great case. I never expected him to hit homers like 2009 once he left the dome because he was hitting 360 foot fly balls that were barely clearing the fence. If he was hitting those homers 450 feet and batting .200 from swinging so hard I would give him the same recommendation to tone it down. Dozier probably won't keep pace with Bautista and shouldn't try to. Same applies to Arcia. Clearing the fence by 100 feet shouldn't come at the expense of 70 points of batting average.
  3. Hicks at the time of demotion had a better OBP than Revere or Span. These two were leadoff hitters whose sole responsibility was getting on base. Hicks did a better job of that from the 9 hole than they did from the #1 spot and yet posters were pining about trading these two guys away and calling for Hicks' head. If it was sustainable I would have been fine with Hicks walking .370 of the time and striking out .630 of the time for a .000 batting average. He could have gone up there with a wiffle bat and turned the wrong way for all I care. Would probably kill me mentally to have a whole team made up of that but from the 9 or 1 spot it would make me happy.
  4. If not for options I could see a revolving door for him and Colabello. They gain confidence in AAA and ride it for a while in the bigs. There is the benefit of sending him down. I am in the camp of he swings too hard. His minor league numbers show very high batting average with mid teen home run power. That is the guy I want to see in the majors. 450 foot homers look nice but count for no more than the 380 foot ones. He should do what Cuddyer finally did when he was slumping bad and that is take a lot more pitches. Even if he strikes out never swinging the bat. Right now pitchers only need to throw one strike at most to get him out. Show a willingness to walk and he will start to get better pitches to hit.
  5. I was never one of those with East Coast envy. I would rather beat the White Sox than the Yankees so last weekend was good for me.
  6. Not just young players. I would groan every time LNP hit a homer, rare as it was. He would then swing from his heels for a month. It always seemed he was more embarrassed that he didn't hit homers than he was about his batting average. Not a good attribute for an on base guy. It wasn't the fact that Arcia was hitting home runs but how far he was hitting them. Also a sign of swinging too hard. Arcia did have some bad luck as well this week. At least 3 line drives to first caught. Seems to have a little more upper cut to his swing now.
  7. From the article " The TV cameras caught Hunter running in from center field screaming and yelling at his teammates."
  8. The best thing about Perkins is that he thought he was being treated unfairly, stood up for himself but after it was done didn't hold it against the Twins (or the fans). I am not so sure about the leadership done. Do you really think screaming at players gets them fired up and makes them play better? Do you really think Koske was motivated by Hunter to hit a 3 run homer? If yelling at guys worked everyone would do it. Hunter was a good player but I am skeptical about the leadership thing. I prefer Pucket who led by example and generally lifted guys spirits by encouraging them.
  9. Regarding charoman's comment I am not in love with the strikeout at all costs mentality. Its true that our starters lacked strikeout ability but its not just about power arms. They also lacked stuff and control. If you look at the team ERA leaders they are mostly middle of the pack for strikeouts. If you look at the strikeout leaders they are mostly middle of the pack ERA. Bottom of league strikeouts is a problem. To become top of the league should not be the goal. The goal should be best of league for ERA. The best way to achieve that is with stuff and control. Mph is a subset of stuff. It is not the universe.
  10. Three batting titles with .405 OBP and .863 OPS don't exist in any other catcher except Mike Piazza as far as I can think of. I believe it stacks up well with many 1st basemen in the HOF. Rod Carew for example is in the Hall as a 1st baseman. Of course it doesn't stack up very well with Cabrerra but many HOFers don't either. Because of his problems the last couple years people forget just how good Mauer was in the prior decade. His HOF resume would look quite nice if he can put up another 6 years of career average. His OBP, average and OPS are really good so yeah, he was a star. His RBI totals suffered a bit from batting behind the likes of Punto, Casilla, etc. He was really a very good #2 hitter who was just a good #3 hitter. If he doesn't get his game back I would put him more in the Tony Oliva fringe candidate. Still great. Having caught for 8 or so years will only help.
  11. Not excited about Fuld at all. Would prefer to keep Hicks out there but what would Rosario have to do to get promoted to Twins center fielder in the next 6 weeks or so?
  12. Thanks lightfoot. That could be and certainly time will tell but has anyone seen him in the minors over the years? Is he swinging harder now? Reminds be a little of Hrbek. Don't get me wrong. He was a great player but he had such a good swing I always thought that if he had settled on one stance and used the whole park he could have been much more like Muguel Cabrerra and had a shot at the HOF. He hit moon shots for home runs that were fun to watch but he was the original guy that made me think clearing the fence by 100 feet wasn't really necessary. On the topic of current Twins reminding me of former Twins I was happy to hear Santana say we shouldn't expect many more homers out of him since that is not his game. I often wondered if Nick Punto could have been much better except for the fact that when he hit a rare home run he spent the next couple of months trying to hit another one. He just seemed way more concerned with his home run total than his batting average by how hard he would swing.
  13. Here's the thing I don't care for. His homerun rate is higher in the majors than it was in the minors. When he was coming up what I really liked was his mix of hitting for average and power but now it looks like he is going for it all on every pitch. When I see him swing I think does he really need to go max effort? A 380 foot homer counts just as much as a 440 foot homer and I would like to see more of the .314 average he had in the minors even if it means a couple fewer homers.
  14. Darnell, Johnson and Pino have all pitched better than Meyer. At least two are likely to be able to go deeper into games. Why is Meyer on an 80 pitch limit? If they want to keep him on an 80 pitch limit wouldn't it make more sense to bring him up in long relief? I made the argument that keeping Correia could be justified (not to be confused with what I want to happen) if he continued to trend in the right direction. His last start did not go that way and I think he is done if his next start also goes south. What if he throws a Bert Blyleven defined quality start against the Blue Jays?
  15. Can someone explain the out of options thing to me. If Morales agrees to go down to the minors what is the problem? Kind of silly that there isn't some provision for this situation.
  16. I think if that bad start is his next start you are right but what if he has two quality starts before his next bad one? I am not going to wish he tanks it his next start but that may clear things up if he does. When thinking of Santana keep Valencia in the back of your mind. .276 minor league hitters do not become .378 or even .333 hitters, at least not immediately. Its a nice run but don't write his name in ink for longer range plans. Rosario is probably stop gap solution to Buxton but don't rule Hicks out. His slash lines for the last month are plenty good with shorter term even better. He hasn't gone fishing for the breaking balls against righties like many thought he would. His slash lines against lefties are very good and he still plays good defense. Santana will regress and Hicks may very well get better quickly only hitting from one side. If Morales just gets the at bats Kubel and Parmalee were getting this may be a great move. May in the rotation and signs of life from Mauer would make this team look much more like a contender.
  17. No apology necessary for Pelfrey. It should have worked out much better than it did. I am more annoyed at the moment that they signed Correia to a two year deal. Morales looks like a huge upgrade over what Kubel has done for us. Only thing is Vargas doesn't look too far away from which we expect about the same thing. Morales would need a little time to get ready. Would he be blocking Vargas if it is more than a 1 year contract? Or are we trading Mauer?
  18. I wish more people would try to remember that stuff. I often wonder what the archives would look like for people saying we should have signed Morneau or shouldn't have signed Mauer. I remember plenty saying Lohse was not good and Cuddyer was worthless not to mention comments about Gomez, Crain and Dickey.
  19. Its a good question. He has missed a lot of real game at bats but assume he was still working on his game even during the suspension. I would guess any week long stretch of hitting around .300 should get him back to AA. I think the Twins want to promote him so it would be nice if he could force the issue with his play.
  20. I believe I read an article by one of these guys basically saying that Correia was unlucky thus far in the season. You would never credit my saying he gave up 6 runs but had bad defense behind him and the hits were all seeing eye grounders. Apparently bad luck is proof that he is bad and good luck is proof that he is bad. Getting out of jams and inducing ground ball double plays should not be considered proof that he was horrible. Again, 1 run in 6 innings at Yankee stadium. If it was lucky then that will run its course over the next couple starts. I was against his two year contract to start with, don't think he is all that great but he had a pretty good year last year and is trending in the right direction. Keep trending in the right direction and he should be gone soon through trade. Trend the other way for a couple games and he should be gone through demotion.. I love the idea of replacing him with a musical chairs sequence of prospects but if they actually did it and guys failed there would be an avalanche of criticism for doing so. I want to see May, I won't cry to never see Corriea again but I have patience and the knowledge that it is a long season and two weeks might provide a completely different view. I did like the 100's in the wallet comment. Chief gets a point.
  21. From an article in 2013 in the Pioneer Press. "According to Earl Brown's 1982 scouting report released by the Hall of Fame as part of its Diamond Mines exhibit, Puckett had no better than an "outside chance" of reaching the majors. "And that was generous," Ryan says. Then Midwest scouting supervisor for the New York Mets, Ryan watched Puckett quite a bit as an amateur and had many of the same doubts as the rest of the industry. "He didn't even play center field for his junior-college team," Ryan says. "
  22. "Although his MLB future would appear to be a fourth or fifth outfielder, he is the kind of guy who is still young and could play for a long time" Whenever I see a guy like this having this kind of season that has that kind of projection I think about what the scouts thought about Kirby Puckett or Pete Rose. Puckett was considered an outside shot to ever make a major league team and this is what they said about Rose " can’t run, can’t throw, does not have a specific position, and he should try to learn to hit right-handed before trying to hit left-handed.” . Then on the flip side they take a guy like Hicks that never really dominated a stretch of minor league and project him as a Tori Hunter. I know Ortiz is older and maybe that is his ceiling but that was one heck of a month. If Buxton ever has a month like that at New Britain we will consider it proof positive that he will be an all star in the majors within a couple years.
  23. Colabello going in this slump is almost like Knoblach not being able to throw to 1st base anymore. Just doesn't make sense. I really hope he turns it around.
  24. Twins have come a long way when giving up 1 run in 6 inning on the road to the Yankees is not a good start.
  25. To improve it by a run and a half in a month means you have to throw better than a 5 ERA in that month. This isn't cominig from an I want to keep Correia at the expense of May place. I don't that. I am saying he had a decent year last year and his career shows an ok ERA so when he started out bad and is trending toward his career marks it is hard to pull him. If his May was a 6 ERA he would probably have been demoted already.
