  1. It's interesting that people believe that Hicks' very good 40 PA's in spring training rightfully earned him a job, and that his 40 dreadful PA's to start the regular season should be ignored. At least some of Hicks' 'improvement' is just the simple fact that it's difficult to be historically bad for very long. And some of it is that his very bad luck on batted balls in play has evened out. So while he's certainly looked better, quite a bit of that is just perception and better luck. If you're batting .153/.221/.267 against right-handed pitching after a third of a season, it's safe to say that you could use a little time in the first level you ever skipped in your career.
  2. Having Hicks play in AAA after his rehab is a painless way to address what was pretty clearly a mistake dating back to before opening day.
  3. You made a good case for Marcum, but you omitted the last sentence of the interview with him... "The Kansas City, Mo., native added that he has no preference with the geographic location of a franchise or if it's an American League or National League squad, but wherever he ends up signing, he wants there to be a realistic chance at making the playoffs." Which pretty much rules out the Twins. On the other hand, rationalization can be a powerful force when fueled by greed. But if Marcum rules out the Twins for being non-competitors in 2013, we'll have another high water mark of Twins futility, since Marcum apparently sees an 89 loss team that's gone 20 years without a postseason appearance as having a better shot at the playoffs.
  4. Because the Twins had to come up with some sort of narrative to support the illusion that his success was sustainable.
  5. +2. That, and let's see him dominate a few lineups better than the Twins before we start planning to mortgage the farm for him. He is the kind of guy they'll probably have to roll the dice on eventually, though.
  6. Hicks easily makes the conversation for disappointing outfielders. He's batting just .239/.325/.384 with 41 K's to 19 BB's in 138 AB's. It's his first go at AA pitching, so it's not time to panic, but if he's still struggling against righties later in the season, then the Twins need to scrap the switch hitting and have him start batting right-handed.
  7. Ben Revere cannot get on base. Ben Revere cannot drive the ball. Ben Revere cannot throw. He can run fast and he has great range. There is a very specific name for a skill set that limits a player to being a defensive sub and pinch runner. It's called '5th outfielder'. Revere may still develop. He's approaching the point in his career that's comparable to where Span was when the light came on for him. That happened for Span in AAA. I hope it happens for Revere, too. He still may become something more than a 5th OF. And if that happens, it will probably be in Rochester.
  8. After 4 seasons of pro ball, Aaron Hicks was still overmatched in high A. He's not a star in the making. He's still trying to switch hit, as far as I know, despite not being able to hit left-handed. It's probably wrong to promote him, but so what? They're not hampering the development of a future switch-hitting star center fielder. They're making a small mistake with the career progression of a right-handed hitting 4th OF who can handle center field. Not going to be losing any sleep over that one, especially with Benson starting the year in AAA. and with all the genuine disasters inflicted on the franchise during Bill Smith's four year reign of terror.
