  1. Wow. Spent a few minutes cleaning up the Leinie's that exploded in the freezer and it's 11-1? Holy crap.
  2. Yeah. Had better luck there than in Texas, anyway.
  3. Finally I understand why I'm always confusing Chicago with Tombstone... http://valkilmer.com/images/pics/78/tombstone.jpeg
  4. Like you don't have some dirt on all of us by now.
  5. Jolly Roger alternative: http://www.dash2.com/images/top10/103f14s.jpgSadly, it seems unlikely that the affable, squishy-looking fellows on the Twins logo will be gracing the tails of any USN aircraft any time soon...
  6. On cue, Morneau 4 for 5 with a double today. Hope your post has the same effect on Presley tonight.
  7. Buster Olney reported it this way: "Remember how the Jays were expected to be such big players in the Yu Darvish bidding? Well, one official said that Toronto actually finished third in the bidding, behind the Rangers and Cubs, and that no bid was within $35 million of what Texas tendered." Maybe somebody in Texas was told it would mean their job if they didn't get Darvish, rather than if they grossly outbid other teams. Anyway, I tend to agree with you that it's going to take more than a total commitment of $60 million. If Darvish's posting is halfway between aberration and market correction, then Tanaka may fetch 20-25 million posting and 50-55 million for 5 years, that's about $75 million, or about halfway between 'bargain' and 'pricey'. That price would be doable and would go a long way toward restoring credibility on and off the field.
  8. Maddon's job interview with Twins front office personnel... Terry Ryan: Like I did with Ron, I would expect to talk with you frequently about what kind of team you'd like to field. For starters, can you tell me how you would like to see the organization go about adding talent within the constraints of our existing budget? Maddon: It would be great to see you and your staff target a free agent pitcher with strong peripherals who is still affordable due to an ERA that was artificially inflated by a high BABIP and low strand rate. And maybe be willing to part with some non-essential talent to acquire a high minor league infielder who has posted strong wOBA's for his age relative to league but who is undervalued because he's blocked within his organization. Entire Twins front office in unison: http://www.mymeetingprofessional.com/wp-content/uploads/Dr-Evil-My-Meeting-Professional.jpg BWAAAAHAAAAAAHAAAAAHAAAAAHAAAA!!!!!!!
  9. Yup. 995 and counting. With the season in the tank it's surprising that it hasn't been played up more by the Twins. And maybe he'll leave us with a few more fond memories after the thousandth win by adding a few more ejections to his impressive career total. He's already on pace to break Earl Weaver's AL record of 98 career ejections if he manages just 6 more seasons.
  10. If they interview Ullger for any reason other than professional courtesy to make him appear more legitimate as a managerial candidate elsewhere, it would be very disappointing to me.
  11. Yes. Strangely, however, unmerited criticism is well within your rights. It's kind of hard to explain...
  12. So did I. And Reed really was expensive (15 million/2 years was a lot back then), even though the loss of Lawton offset most of the money. Was surprised to see Rogers' one 2 million dollar season in MN after he made almost 4 times that in TX the year before. And he made $8 million in his final season just 5 years ago, when Detroit lost 88 games. Had forgotten there were only two seasons between The Gambler knowing when to fold'em and the Tigers making it to the ALCS
  13. 38 homers in 2011-12. Florimon will probably be lucky if his career total surpasses that. WAR puts Espinosa's value in each of those two seasons as more than double Florimon's 2013 total. Espinosa's exactly the kind of player the Twins should be considering as low-cost gambles to fill some of the holes and potentially upgrade the second-worst offense in the AL.
  14. You pretty sure that minority is still small? Even right after a wildly successful debut season in 2010, 40 percent of MN residents felt the public subsidy of TF wasn't justified. After three really bad seasons and a dramatically slashed payroll, has that number declined or risen? Too bad we didn't get the downtown merchants to pay for the Vikings stadium either. Woulda been nice.
  15. Not even then, really. Rogers cost only $2 million in his only year here, was wasn't much even back then. Reed cost an average of only $1.5 million more in his 2 years here than the guy he was traded for, Matt Lawton. So Ryan really only added an average of less than 2 million per year in payroll for a year of Rogers and two years of Reed. Pretty much agree with the max deal length of 3 years. There will probably be a few guys who command a longer deal, like Ervin Santana, but it's hard to see the Twins going after that kind of signing anyway.
  16. Why not both? Give credit where it's due! btw, who is Buck 91?
  17. You're still just a kid and you already have a van home? ...that still moves? Anyway. Heh. Just making polite chitchat. How 'bout that Dozier guy?
  18. And almost as sad is the fact that the best starter is a guy who is a very long shot to help the team when they're good again. Combine that with Gibson's fugly debut and the flameouts of Worley and Diamond, and it's safe to say the rotation has been a disaster for the third straight year.
  19. Given the constraints of not rolling excess payroll over, and the Twins' tradition of not landing the really big free agent fish, I would say that Willingham was a good signing that became a bad one when the Twins failed to trade him for a good prospect in the offseason. Couldn't agree more about the ala carte rationalization wrt Sanchez.
  20. Looks like a good plan, but it's hard to see Gardenhire going along with a platoon or timeshare anywhere except catcher. If the Twins go with what you suggest because they have a new manager, then I like your plan even more. It would be nice if they could trade Willingham for value, but at this point Doumit just needs to be moved for nothing to open up a roster spot.
  21. Sounds about right. The opening at first should have exactly zero to do with how the Twins handle Mauer's future. If first base is not the best place for Mauer in terms of the future of the franchise, then you don't put him there just because you lost Morneau to free agency. You replace Morneau and move on. Mauer should catch less with the team not competing, but he doesn't need to play first to do so. The Twins burned up 166 designated hitter plate appearances on Doumit, who hit .224/.271/.375 as a DH, and just .240/.310/.385 overall. That's terrible. It's pretty safe to say the Twins and Mauer could both benefit from having him DH more. And Gardenhire's ridiculous phobia about not using him there more is just one more reason to show him the door to his new office.
  22. The Twins pocketed over $25 million of projected payroll this year, and burned $5 million more off the field on the predictably disasterous Nick Blackburn contract. So my question is this: If the Twins put over $30 million in payroll somewhere other than on the field, why can't they do it with 50? Put another way, when was the last time the Twins signed even a mid-tier free agent to a mulit-year deal, who wasn't a replacement for a similar player (eg Willingham for Cuddy) that was lost to free agency? And in case you were wondering, no, Kevin Correia doesn't count. The problem isn't that the Twins massively underspent on the field yet didn't outbid everyone for Guerrero. The problem isn't even that they identified him as a player who could potentially help the franchise but failed to acquire him. The problem is that based on their history, they were either incapable of acquiring him, or never serious about doing so in the first place. Hope you're right about Ryan spending next year. It would be a breakthrough of historical proportion.
  23. And don't stay up talking to TD weirdos after bedtime...
  24. Yes. Even part time is hard. And while your gifts of intellect and determination make it possible for you to achieve a level of education and achievement that is beyond the reach of almost all people on the planet, even with financial considerations aside, just remember: We'll be here, pulling for you, encouraging you, and offering heartfelt advice from our centuries of collective wisdom. But you better snap the f*% out of the 3 AM nap and send the ambulance if any of us press the LifeAlert button.
  25. Go with the instinct, well done. Would have posted the advice sooner but needed to go get the 18-pack of Totino's party pizzas that I bought at Costco this morning out of the minivan before they went bad. Not that any of the phantom guests of a party whose primary bait is Totino pizza would notice if they did go bad... http://static.caloriecount.about.com/images/medium/totinos-party-pizza-pepperoni-56825.jpg
