  1. Explain/expand, but no need to defend. Threw in my towel on Gomez about the time they gave up on him, but it had to do with them ending up getting what may have been at the time better value with Hardy. Just wondering, not arguing.
  2. Ooh, Ooh OOH, I totally know this one! Target's marketing agency, you're my corporate soul mate! That commercial soundtrack was an instrumental version of 'Kids in America', recorded by a then-31-year-old British lady by the name of Kim Wilde. Sure, that's a bit like recording an 'I was there' ode to the American Revolution for her, but the important thing is that Minnesota-based Target somehow found out that her song has a strong association for me with an early right of passage, and I will be stocking up on Crest, Tide (or was that Walmart?), and random rugs and linens because of their commitment to demographically popular random music in their advertising.
  3. No, but if there's a downpour rain delay, you might be able to see him retake the field by briefly walking on water...
  4. .. ... despite the jetlag of flying all night to return from a marathon nonstop 72-hour negotiating lasting peace in a troubled region of the world. (Edit: Harold Reynolds re-confirms that Derek Jeter is, in fact, an ambassador!) Again, I'm not one of them, but if Jeter hits for the cycle, this evening will end for a JeterHater on a rooftop in a hail of SWAT bullets.
  5. Was gonna go with Hefty, but that would be exaggerating. Hoping you were thinking plastic instead of paper, but not holding it against you.
  6. My post was meant to apply to the Twins currently in the rotation, but yes, in a very marginal and academic way, Pelfrey seems more likely to me to be back than Correia because he is A), unfortunately and inadvisedly under contract for next season, and , unlike Correia, has expressed no reluctance to pitch from the bullpen. Don't want either pitcher back, but letting Pelfrey try to earn a spot in the pen, especially in the minors, seems a lot less unpalatable than trying to milk another year or more *shudder* in the rotation from Correia.
  7. One bag? http://38.media.tumblr.com/f59cf0e6a7d24140fb4596b2d9d1aa51/tumblr_n5u22jdXGw1rwe7ioo1_500.gif
  8. Yeah, but then no Hardy, and then no Hoey, and then...
  9. NSA surveillance computers would have crashed in 1999 if 'Wassaaaahhhp' was the code word for bomb.
  10. Just a guess, but do you mean the re2pect thing? Two-spect just makes me think of a deceased entertainer... http://a1.files.biography.com/image/upload/c_fill,g_face,h_300,q_80,w_300/MTE5NTU2MzE1OTkzOTAwNTU1.jpg Probably just another sign of my advancing case of G.O.M.L. disease, but gratuitous use of hashtag/L33tspeak stuff in everyday life makes me happy that is on my side:
  11. With uniforms and marching... I'm in. Hoping for a good game and good game thread, but my enthusiasm is a little low. Hard to explain, but to me, hosting the ASG when the Twins are in another down year is like hosting the rotating MN family Christmas when there's no snow and you and your little brother both have pinkeye. Still cool, because, well, Christmas, but still... And while I don't dislike Jeter the way some people do, the Jeterification of this ASG is reaching the point where I might before it's over.
  12. Ayn Rand came off a lot more feminine after she lost the tie... Also, you already knew this, but we didn't: "Conrad, like his fellow candidates, underwent several days of what they considered to be invasive, demeaning, and unnecessary medical and psychological testing at the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute in New Mexico. Unlike his fellow candidates, Conrad rebelled against the regimen. During a Rorschach inkblot test, he told the psychiatrist that one blot card revealed a sexual encounter complete with lurid detail. When shown a blank card, he turned it around, pushed it back and replied "It's upside down".[8] Then when he was asked to deliver a stool sample to the onsite lab, he placed it in a gift box and tied a red ribbon around it. Eventually, he decided that he had had enough. After dropping his full enema bag on the desk of the clinic’s commanding officer, he walked out.[9] His initial application to NASA was denied with the notation not suitable for long-duration flight." In other words, a posthumous TD Hall of Famer, among other things. Great link to the Winton article, btw.
  13. Oh, and when you have time tomorrow, concentrate and tell me what you see... http://content7.flixster.com/question/63/34/00/6334005_std.jpg
  14. Flamingo? Caesar's? But please not the Tropicana, heard there was some unpleasant business there... http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/059/0/5/Moe_Greene_Special_by_Kersey475.jpg
  15. Saw Hoffman recently. The only remaining differences between him and Yoda at this point are pretty much just skin color, hair density, and force ability.
  16. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Vb-3vmTf9_A/Ubmlvy5CsoI/AAAAAAAARLw/q5pPHt2XK7c/s1600/tumblr_me0rokHIME1rlpjolo1_500.gif Tomorrow is Monday. Plan accordingly. Also, preliminary research shows that your Twins run tally bingo and overall score call turning out that way is almost as improbable as the NBA draft lottery actually turning out to be random after all.
  17. Wow, Dozier puts you in the awkward position of sort of rooting for the Twins NOT to score. Kudos for getting a call right with a number that seemed not only borderline absurd, but also with the whole unlucky stigma thing attached. I trust that if the Twins give up two in the 9th, you'll be on the next plane to Vegas, or maybe gassing up the Buick Roadmaster for a long road trip. http://www.imcdb.org/i001934.jpg
  18. That got out in a hurry. Just nice to see him make contact, and another insurance run couldn't hurt the way the ball has been jumping today.
  19. Very safe. Looked up that '98 roster; they should have been renamed the OldAndSlowioles for that season. These are the guys with qualifying PA's in 1998: Harold Baines, 39 Hit one triple in half his 14 seasons from 1988-2001 (including '98), and zero in the others. Joe Carter, 38 One triple in what would turn out to be his last season. Cal Ripken Jr., 38 and managing the only triple of his final FIVE seasons. Eric Davis, 36, a former burner who followed an 80 steal '86 season with 50 the next. Legged out one of THREE triples he recorded from 1991-98. Rafael Palmeiro, 34, one triple, and averaged less than one per season for the rest of his career. B.J. Surhoff , 34, former catcher, one triple, averaged one per season in the remaining seven seasons of his career. Chris Hoiles, 33 catcher, zero '98 triples, two total in over 2800 PA's. Roberto Alomar, one triple despite being just 30 and logging 80 career triples to go with 474 career stolen bases. Former Twins Rich Becker was the runner up with 2 triples despite just 199 PA's. It's like a perfect storm of slowness.
  20. Thanks, that's funny because my guess was going to be either 3 or even 2 if the Dead Ball era was as hard on triples as it was homers (it was, briefly, followed by a spike). But I never would have guessed that a speedy leadoff guy like Brady Anderson, who averaged nearly 10 triples and more than 25 SB's per season in his prime would be that leader at just 34 years of age. PS Which site did you use to look that up?
  21. That kind of makes me wonder what the lowest triple season total to lead an MLB team might be.
  22. After that last one it might be fair to expand that to 'tough week'...
  23. Thanks for the link. Pretty surprising even without Buxton or Sano. Makes me wonder how close to a sellout they could get even if there were more high-profile Twins prospects in the game. No doubt some non-MN pundit will use the sparse attendance to knock Twins fans as casual and not knowledgeable.
  24. After 3 90-something-loss seasons, it's almost become an unconscious reflex for Dick to alternate between silver linings and odd tangents to draw attention away from the product on the field. But it beats going full Chernobyl on the team like Harrelson has with the Sox. Thinking Blackmon is the best player I hadn't heard of before the Twins played his team.
  25. AL average 3.94 at the moment, but starter ERA is 4.07. Twins still stink in that context, with a rotation ERA of 4.82, and they're still the worst in baseball in starter K's, trailing the next-lowest AL team by nearly 60.
