  1. Just for the sake of argument, if Pineda had not blown out his arm and his early year stats projected out the whole year... A) what would he rank in terms of free agent starting pitchers B.) what kind of contract would he be looking at getting?
  2. From the fans' perspective this is the issue with no salary cap. We don't have enough information to confidently say what we would do. If I knew that our payroll cap was $130M then I'd say spending $8M on a big RP upgrade would be a good use of funds, but if I was told that $110M was our internal cap, then I'd probably focus most of our remaining resources on a SP upgrade and buy a couple lottery ticket RPs. It always sounds good to say "it's not my money" but we know Falvine has a cap (maybe a softish one), we just don't know what it is. The fact that Falvine spent $2m on Pineda for this season, doesn't give us the answer, but it does give us some clues. If their soft cap was $110m, I strongly doubt that they would use $2m of their $15m left on a organizational strategic move rather than on a move designed to make a big improvement for 2018. This makes me think that they are working with a number much closer to 130 than 110.
  3. Other scenarios include him being a good bullpen arm for 1.25 years or flipping him at the 2019 deadline. Neither is wonderful or terrible.
  4. I'm a little surprised by the negative opinions on this signing. Worse case scenario: we lit $10M on fire. MLB teams do that all the time. Median scenario: he comes back in Aug and pitches from the bullpen the rest of the year. 2019 he pitches like a good #4 starter, which, at $8M, is an underpay. He becomes a free agent and we thank him for his time here. Really Good Scenario: Same as above but he pitches like a 2/3, which $8M is a severe underpay, we extend him a QO and are happy if we get him for 1/18, or he declines and we get the 35th pick in the 2020 draft for the trouble.
  5. Perhaps I should have said "pitchers" instead of "pitching"
  6. Y'all have taken a hard line before on moving and locking threads. My suggestion (not that you're asking) would be to lock up the "day 0" thread at midnight and start a day 3 thread.
  7. Cleveland's strength is its pitching. Pitching is historically more volitile year over year than hitting and more affected by injuries. They could have one pitcher get injured and one play like crap and all of a sudden they start to look pretty normal.
  8. It's because there was a day 0 thread but never a day 1 or day 2 thread. People don't know where to post.
  9. If Machado was open to a 4 year extension, he'd be in Baltimore for 5 more years
  10. So.... blow it up then?
  11. He did try. Stanton nixed 2 deals previously, then listed 4 teams he'd be ok with. Jeter was told to get payroll down to 55M (from 115M), so the cuts needed to be deep.
  12. The rumor comes from a Pirates fan site, not Seth. Which gives it more credibility than if it came from "us" And actually, the reaction from what seemed like Pirates fans on Twitter, was positive.
  13. I don't include Royce Lewis in any trade, unless it's a reasonably priced top 5 MLB pitcher with plenty of team control remaining AKA - I'm not trading Royce Lewis
  14. I would add a choice of Gonsalves/Romero to the rumored Cole package in order to get Archer instead. Is actually an interesting either/or. 4 years of Archer Or 2 years of Cole and 6 years of the prospect we lose.
  15. Worth at least noting is that even if Cole pitches below his current level, the Twins would likely get a valuable comp pick when (if) he leaves in two years.
  16. If the rumored trade proposal is accurate then I would think the reason MN is hesitating is because internally they are very high on Jay. You have to give some to get some so it's pretty obvious Gordon would be included. While I like Granite and think he's a valuable 4th OF for us this year, you don't hesitate to add to the front end of your pitching staff because of a 4th OF. So it has to be about Jay and the ceiling/floor our front office views for him.
  17. If we signed Darvish, then would you be ok with this trade?
  18. While I agree that the lines are set based on how bettors will bet them, Vegas isn't worried about Ole and Lena wagering their $50 weekly church donation. They are worried about the sharps. Maybe Vegas thought the Twins should be 50-1 and set the line at 75-1 to encourage action, but they wouldn't have moved it from 30-1 "real" odds to 75-1 because then the sharps would be all over it.
  19. Most of the time, I think that's just an easy crutch by a writer. But, I have to think that some percentage of the time it is true. Maybe one of Levine's main tasks was coordination with Japanese media. Maybe, in the same way that the MN Twins FO splits other MLB teams and player agents roughly evenly between Falvey, Levine, and Antony, Texas did the same thing and Levine has Darvish's agent.
  20. Most of them, specifically, the one I use, doesn't have MLB futures yet.
  21. Also, how incredibly fascinating would Tim Wakefield's spin rate pitchFX data be? I assume I could look at it for hours. "Oh, Shiiiiiiiiiit!!!!!! He got one in single digits!!!!!!"
  22. I'd be interested to know what the bell curve off MLB average spin rate looks like. Those two numbers don't really mean anything to 99.9% of people that follow baseball
  23. No there isn't. The Supreme Court still needs to decide who can take my money.
