  1. Did everyone else get Angels announcers for the final two outs? I am in Rochester (mn), but I had dickbert before that.
  2. Is there a conspiracy within MLB to put all Twins games at the time of day that I am least likely to be able to watch them?
  3. I started this thread like a year ago, but I think it was "too soon"
  4. Quality Starts: Det - 0 MN - 2 We're comin'!!!!! (yes, I know that's a jinx if they don't pull KC)
  5. In honor of Worley's "first clean inning" prognostication, when do we get our first HR? I'll say: 4/4/13 - Inning 7
  6. Geez, what the opposite of "doing the little things?"
  7. At least the M's have an ace
  8. While the thread has turned away from Mauer's contract, I think many people missed the point of the Grantland article. It wasn't "these were the 15 worst contracts when they were signed." It was "these are the 15 worst contracts as they sit today." At the time Mauer signed the contract, I agree with most people in this thread that it was fair market value for an MVP, batting champ, catcher, hometown guy, who had shown signs of power potential. BUT The next couple years happened and, at least currently, he is a part time hometown catcher, who obviously has value, but not like when he signed the contract. I was really surprised that he wasn't on Keri's list. His contract is eating up 30% of the team's current payroll, they needed to spend 3 mil per year on a realistic backup option since Mauer is best when he's catching about 2/3 of the games, and he's not performing at a $23 mil level.... and I think most people would be relatively surprised if he got back to 23mil level within the duration of his contract.
  9. I am not a great prospect mind, but there is one major thing you can accomplish by trading Mauer... A complete transformation of our rotation. Using the Arizona example above... Worley Kennedy Grienke (signed with the Mauer money) Diamond future - Gibson, Meyer, May, Bauer, Appel (draft) Seeing that makes me think you go for a high end infield prospect rather than a pitching prospect like Bauer. Lets play ball
  10. I'm not saying Denard is a bad player especially with his very reasonable contract taken into consideration, but for me personally, I like a leadoff hitter more like Revere than Span. Neither of them are perfect, but I'd tend toward Revere.
  11. For me, I guess the trade boils down to a couple key things.... a) I don't think Denard is that great of a leadoff hitter. If my leadoff hitter is going to hit 280 without much power and without a particularly high BB rate, he damn sure better be a terror on the bases. (See: Revere, Ben). Denard had many more doubles than Revere, but how many of Revere's singles did he turn into doubles with a SB? The answer is, Revere basically made up the difference in doubles with his +31 vs +11 on the bases (and at a more sustainable success rate). Other than doubles (advantage, Span) and SB (advantage, Revere) they were almost identical offensively. I don't know what the defensive metrics say, but I know that my eyes tell me that Revere is a much better CF that Span is. c) Revere costs about 10% of what Span costs (as does the person that will move into the OF to replace Span) d) There was no realistic path towards playoff contention in 2013. e) Almost all non-pitching prospects in the organization project as outfielders.
  12. How you rolled up the rankings is flawed. There aren't enough ranks to throw out the high and low (which, I assume, is why Hicks is ahead of Arcia). Also, it makes no sense that Vargas and Benson are ahead of Harrison.
  13. In general I am unhappy, but I will give it an "incomplete" and reserve judgement until I see whether the Twins go get a couple decent pitchers in the offseason. This non-trade clearly makes us better in 2013, but probably not as good in 2014 and beyond. So if we try to do something next year, I can accept not doing anything this trade deadline. If we see a typical offseason this year from the Twins then I would deem this trade deadline a total failure
  14. At this point, you have to at least make the QO (if we don't trade him). I mean, even if he regresses a little for the rest of the year, he would have to turn down the 1 year / 12mil offer, right? I mean, he'd be looking at 3/35 or 4/45, so why would he even consider the 1/12 offer. So, if nothing else comes from this hot stretch from Frankie, he at least pitched well enough for us to make the 1/12 offer and have him turn it down. SO, at least we would get a sandwich pick out of it. Once he hits free agency, he's gone. Not because he doesn't like it here (maybe he does maybe he doesn't) but because there's going to be some team out there that is much less risk-averse than the Twins who will offer 2-3mil more per season or 1-2 years more than the Twins are willing to go. I'd like it if they made a 3/27 offer right now, before really shopping him. If he says no (which I would expect he would), then so be it and you explore your trade options, all the while having the QO compensation pick in the back of your mind to determine if a given offer gets you enough back for Liriano.
  15. One interesting thing would be how that effects your draft "allowance" I know that the team getting the supplemental pick adds to it's "allowance" and I assume that if a team receives a pick from another team that the allowance would transfer. But if that's not how it works there could be some interesting games to be played.
  16. I agree that the 2nd version doesn't explicitly say that the team that lost the player GETS the 1st round pick from the team that signed the player, but I think that's a logical thing to infer.
  17. In the end, it's a decent spot for the Twins to be in. There are plenty of reasons to keep Span around, but if someone really wants him and is willing to give us good prospects, he's also fairly expendable.
  18. I like Span and I go back and forth on whether we should trade him. 1. Trade him - Blow this thing up. Whoever has value, trade 'em. Load up the farm with an eye for 2014/5 2. Don't trade him - I really like 1/2/3/4 right now with Span/Revere/Mauer/Willingham. I look at that and think, "nothing to fix there." There aren't a lot of places on this Twins team where I feel like we don't need to change anything to be a playoff team. Our 1-4 could be the 1-4 of a playoff team (Actually, if you replaced Morneau with either a slightly above league average 1B, or 75% of what he used to be, I would be happy with our 1-7) 3. Trade him - His value is high right now, in spite of his numbers being somewhat down. We've got a guy, in Revere, that can slide right into CF and the leadoff spot. Shop him. Get what you can. 4. Don't trade him - He's a good CF and he's signed for a reasonable price for the next 3 years (probably why other teams want him) 5. Trade him - Every decent offensive prospect in the organization is either currently in the OF, or looks like they might be headed there. We need to balance things out. Right now #2 is leading, in my head, so I say don't trade him. Tomorrow might be a different story.
  19. As for "Have the Twins ever spent 5 years / $90 million on a FA starting pitcher?" No. But, I don't think the Twins have ever been so frustrated with the SP situation. If the Twins can clear Morneau's $$$, I think they go after a top 3 FA SP. Clearing Morneau is the key. The offense will be just fine without Morneau, and you could probably argue that it might get better if you insert a Replacement Level 1B into the mix
  20. Braves, Rangers, Blue Jays, Cardinals
  21. Let's say we sign one of them for 5/90. I think most of us would agree that a lot of what we have in the minor league projects to be at the big leagues by 2015. That still leaves 3 years of that 5 year contract.
  22. 1. Perkins is RH? 2. For the sake of argument, let's say you could package Liriano and Morneau and not be on the hook for any of Morneau's salary next year. Also, let's say the payroll remains at 100mil (which is where it really is right now with the Nishi, Marquis, and Zumaya money). So.... Now our committed payroll next year is 62.45 million with 37.55 left to spend on probably 2 SP and a 1B/DH type (which could be Parmelee, but then his "C IF" spot would open up). The rest gets filled in with Minor league promotions and maybe a couple 1-2mil flier contract to fill out the Bullpen and/or utility IF role. So, let's knock it down to 34 mil to spend. With that kind of money to spend I want to get AT LEAST 1 (probably 2) guys that I know will be part of the 2014-6 solution. And there is nothing "un-doable" about any of that. The important part is getting Morneau's 14.0 off the books next year.
  23. Would you package Liriano with Morneau to get a team to eat all of Morneau's owed money? That feels like a hefty price to pay to just shed payroll, but if it frees up that much extra money to go after players that are part of the long-term solution, I think it needs to be considered. Now, I think we could probably get a couple mid-grade prospects as well, but the question is, would you do it for nothing (in terms of prospects)
  24. If there was ever a night that exemplified the importance of OF defense WAY beyond arm strength, tonight was the night.
  25. Found the article (St Paul side): http://www.twincities.com/1000/ci_20398152/target-field-factor-minnesota-twins-sluggers-constantly-battle?IADID=Search-www.twincities.com-www.twincities.com Hadn't read the article before, but it does say a lot of the same things I did. I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
