  1. Just a crazy thought here...Is it possible that the Twins have been a team that doesn't have a lot of home run power the last two years AND at the same time that the park is more difficult than the average to hit home runs in? Maybe? Being overweight is still bad for you even if you're a smoker (half-baked analogy alert). Curt, I'm wondering why you decided to use only 2011 in your "home runs given up road vs home" instead of 2010 and 2011 together? Also, I had someone much smarter than me once warn me to always make sure if I'm interested in a count or a rate. Pretty certain we're talking about a rate here and in 2010 the opponents had nearly 200 extra at-bats at Target Field compared to their own parks. Using your metric (home runs by Twins' opponents), at Target Field there's 40.4 AB/HR. Away from Target Field is 31.7. That's leaving out 2012 since the opponents haven't had a chance to even out. In general...I don't get how "remember that time so-and-so hit one in the upper deck" has anything to do with the discussion. Those extreme bombs are out everywhere and don't really have anything to do with this topic. It would be like going the other way and pointing out the time Revere tapped out to the pitcher as an example of how big the park plays.
  2. Fangraphs has ground ball and fly ball rates (as well as infield hits and line drives, etc), but I don't know if they have them separated out by outs vs hits. They might if you poke a little.
  3. Not that it matters all that much, but it would really bum me out if they moved the fences at Target Field.
  4. April 18 in win against Yankees. Liked some of what I saw De Vries do. The bad thing about the outing is that his mistakes were BIG mistakes. They weren't just a pitch that was meant to get inside that drifted over the plate a little. They were right down Broadway types. Hopefully that's not the norm.
  5. Keep going, you'll get there.
  6. So we'll throw out Morneau because he hasn't played a full season there, but we'll throw in Dozier as an example of how easy it is because of 30-40 PA at home and away where he's hit one each? Or Willinghams's 1/4 season? Or we could focus on Thome who just happens to be one of the all time strongest players ever. ORRR...we could not cherry pick counter examples. There's information out there on every ballpark that actually uses...you know...all the data available.
  7. I thought I could give you a mulligan and you could get there on your own. Apparently not. I'll hold your hand... On the road, team A hits 500 home runs and gives up 600. In the same number of games at home, they hit 5 and give up 6. Clearly the home park isn't harder to hit home runs in because "other teams don't seem to have trouble hitting home runs there." Right? And I never said Target Field was a problem.
  8. In another thread somewhere, we got to the same place. That part I can't necessarily explain, but I think the rotary of "others" they've played in the outfield this year are not known to be better or worse in either corner, so I don't know if it's a huge difference to put the Hammer where he's played more.
  9. Nope. But I'm not surprised you missed that. (Worth noting that I wasn't planning the second sentence, but there is a minimum number of characters, and that was the truest and most applicable I could come up with.)
  10. The "other teams don't have any trouble at Target Field" meme is extremely simple-minded, lazy, and mostly just wrong. Other teams have out-hit the Twins at Target Field about the same as they have on the road.
  11. So you say it's baffling...then give the "only" explanation that you can think of...and then explain why that explanation doens't make sense. I dont' get it. They came to spring training with Willingham in right and Revere in left, Gardy went on record saying he didn't like Revere in left as much as he expected, and they moved Willingham back. Maybe that's a "cover story," but why do we need to search hard for a conspiracy when the given story makes as much sense as anything else? Other than Revere's arm being more suited to LF than RF, which became a non-issue when he was sent to AAA, the rest of the outfield trouble would only be swapping the bad hitters from RF to LF.
  12. Almost everyone loves a hard-nosed player. Not nearly as many love a dirty player. I think that's the gist of the wide-spread feelings on AJ.
  13. You mean pitching much the same for over a year, then having noticeably better year for his second team after leaving, then going back to pitching just like he did for the Twins for another two years and THEN pitching a lot better for his "new" team. I think that's what you mean, anyway.
  14. If only they kept track of what people hit and recorded it somewhere that people could access, that would be awesome!
  15. Most of what you wrote doesn't seem grinch-ish to me at all. I don't think I'd choose the same thing, and I equally wonder and don't understand at the generational difference in desire to share EVERYTHING with everyone (and I'm not only talking about mourning, here...but mean it more generally and including this particular thing). I also agree that the notion of privacy and personal thought and space has changed. What I wonder, though, is why it "bothers" you. It's different. It's difficult for us to understand maybe. But I also don't understand why you/we/whoever would be bothered by something that is different but doesn't seem to be inherently better or worse. Even if you do make the assumption that your notions of privacy and friendship are "better," I don't see why it's worth being bothered that someone else has chosen to think about it differently. By the way, and I'm not sure if this is exactly on topic, but there was recently (three weeks ago or so?) an article on grantland.com about the culture of "facebook mourning."
  16. I think you're on the right track in one sense. I don't think anyone would care or much mind if they just put in a rule that no individual was allowed to essentially write their opinions or thoughts on the mound (much like they wouldn't be allowed to wear a Clinton-Gore sticker on their uniform). Because, as you hint at, eventually someone's going to get to something actually controversial. By the nature of the act, people are likely to want to put things there out of the middle...nobody's going to put a big capital 'R' to let the world know their favorite color is red (probably). Where the discussion seems to have veered into the "special kind of *******" is by moving away from that general notion, and making assertions of merit on the motives and methods of a particular person on how he should or should not mourn his daughter. And going beyond that and seeming to accuse him of actually taking some sort of enjoyment in calling it a "look at me" moment is pretty disusting.
  17. Don't most games start pretty close?
  18. I fully expect a "take that!" performance from AC for that!
  19. I noticed the same thing! I got a pretty good chuckle out of it and then got to wondering if that's just a coincidence or if there's something about the South and the dialect that lends itself to that. Then I remembered I should probably get back to work.
  20. Another thanks for the heads up. Was able to catch a couple innings over lunch. Holy cow...plenty of good seats available! Is that a day-game phenomenon or are they really drawing that poorly?
  21. There is/are (more than?) one thread devoted entirely to this topic. Not too far back if you go to the Forum category and then Twins Talk, you should be able to find lots o' opinions on that.
  22. Not to take away too much, but the list is certainly longer than that. Griffey Jr immediately pops to mind. I thought Mantle came up at 19. There...it's doubled in size already!
  23. How can you possibly claim Dozier is as good or will have as good a career as Harper, you numbskull!!!! (kidding)
  24. No, as stated in my reply to Bark's Lounge, I was referring to some of the sarcasm that seemed a bit personal. I will also point out that I was probably at least in some part reacting to the fact that I read some comments on the local paper today for the first time in a while...and there was one there talking about how he took more time than he ought to have dealing with the accident. Aren't people awesome?
