  2. http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_21208869/shooter-now-minnesota-twins-seek-free-agents-owner Shooter quotes Jim Pohlad: Pohlad said the Twins . . . will be able to afford some free agents. The Twins' payroll this season is about $100 million. "We're happy at the level (of payroll) we're at right now," the Twins CEO said. Regarding Ron Gardenhire returning next year: "I always reserve the right to change our mind, but I can't imagine that," Pohlad said. "I love him as our manager." Regarding Terry Ryan returning as GM: Ryan is technically the interim GM and has said it's too early to decide whether he will stay in the role. Pohlad said he would be "surprised" if Ryan doesn't remain.
  3. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/164526046.html Also, an interesting quote from Terry Ryan in the Pioneer Press: "I don't quite get it," Ryan said. "I'd like to think we can diagnose and make sure we know what's going to go on, but we're not going to let him go any farther until we figure this out." In the first season of his return as the Twins' GM, Ryan was planning to evaluate the team's medical operation after a 2011 season marred by injuries to key players like Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau. That evaluation is still ongoing, Ryan said, as is the team's new practice of making Ryan or assistant GM Rob Antony the sole point of contact for reporters on injury updates, though Ryan said he thinks that process has worked well. http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_21203057/minnesota-twins-gm-pitcher-ryan-wimmers-injury-i
  4. That's why I was surprised by Pohlad's comment regarding Ryan's position as permanent. From Ryan's response it sounds like he was caught off guard.
  5. http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_21176133/minnesota-twins-owner-jim-pohlad-hopes-terry-ryan "In our minds, he's permanent, but I can't speak for Terry," Pohlad said as he watched batting practice at Target Field on Friday, July 27. "We don't have any desire to see a change there, but we know that he's got to make that decision."

  7. http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/GM_Ryans_interim_tag_remains_I_dont_feel_good_with_where_were_at072712 "I'm still the interim for a reason. I've got a lot of work to do here," Ryan said. "We haven't talked about it at all and I don't anticipate talking about it until we get to the latter part of this year. ..." He's also quoted in Joe Christensen's article in today's StarTribune that he doesn't want the interim label taken off and that he still has to prove that he can do the job. Sounds like he's merely being diplomatic following Jim Pohlad's comments.
  8. Interesting read in the StarTribune today. The article basically says don't expect any deadline trade to produce pitching help for 2013. Terry Ryan states the Twins look for a "high ceiling guy" in such a trade. Given that teams are unlikely to give up such a player whose also major league ready, Ryan said the best target may be a Class A pitcher. The article also cites scouts as saying Brian Duensing has better overall stuff than Scott Diamond. http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/163133146.html
  9. Through 2014 per the Pioneer Press. The article states that contracts with Rochester, Beloit and Fort Myers are also up at the end of this year. Jim Rantz said an affiliation renewal with Fort Myers "seems to be a lock." He also predicted "[e]ight or nine teams, at least" moving in the Midwest League. http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_21104868/minnesota-twins-extend-deal-double-affiliate
  10. Per MLB Trade Rumors http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/07/angels-have-interest-in-matt-capps-francisco-liriano.html
  11. If they intended the former team to receive that pick, the CBA language would have been written differently - eg, "The former team shall also receive the acquiring team's . . . ." They also would have made that language part of "( Former Team" instead of making it a separate section. The fact that they did not state that the former team would receive the acquiring team's pick was intentional.
  12. The CBA states the acquiring team forfeits it's first round pick, but does not state that the former team receives that pick. The former team receives a pick in the supplemental first round. This is the relevant portion of the CBA (4) Compensation … ( Former Club. The former Club of a Qualified Free Agent subject to compensation shall receive an amateur draft choice (“Special Draft Choice”) in the next Rule 4 Draft. …with the selections beginningimmediately following the last regular selection in the first round of Rule 4 Draft… . © Signing Club. i. A Club that signs one Qualified Free Agent who is subject to compensation shall forfeit its highest available selection in the next Rule 4 Draft. … [A] Club shall not be required to forfeit a selection in the top ten of the first round of the Rule 4 Draft, and its highest available selection shall be deemed its first selection following the tenth selection of the first round.
  13. That clause remains in the current CBA (page 12 at http://bizofbaseball.com/docs/2012-16CBA.pdf). The clause though is limited to players that are "under reserve." I assume Baker is no longer "under reserve" once the Twins decline the option year.
  14. John - According to mlbtraderumors.com, Alex Burnett is on pace to be arbitration eligible after this year as a "super two."
  15. The signing deadline is Friday. Any word on whether the Twins are still negotiating with L.J. Mazzilli?
  16. A quick number crunching: the Twins have contracts worth $68.5M for eight players (plus Nishioka) in 2013. Add four arbitration eligible players (ignoring Casilla) and another ten or so at league minimum, and that brings the total to an estimated $77-78M. What does that leave for free agents, $20M? Like you said, if you spend $12.5M on Liriano what do you do about the rest of the rotation?
  17. MLB Trade Rumors said he received a $500K bonus.
  18. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/2012/07/twins-agree-to-sign-australian-lefthander-lewis-thorpe/
  19. Plus another $22M is freed up after 2013 when Morneau, Nishioka and Blackburn's contracts end. I would think the Twins are in a position after this season to offer a multi-year deal.
  20. You don't think they will pursue starting pitching in the offseason?
  21. Charlie Manuel played for the Twins.
  22. I second (or third) all that: the downtown, the people and the ballpark. I try to go at least once a year from DC.
