    Yeah, that's the takeaway to make here. The reality is that based on batted ball profiles, Jeffers had one kinda bad year in 2021. He was good in shortened 2020 and his batted ball profile is once again pretty good in 2022 (adjusting for catchers). He's still 25 with less than a full MLB season played in total. I'm not writing him off yet just because his BABIP is under .250. At the core of it, you're just not giving Jeffers' defense a fair shake. His pop time is almost smack-dab in the middle of MLB catchers at 47th percentile. His framing - the most important aspect of the game today - is borderline elite at 75th percentile. He's not exceptional in either direction with passed balls. He's average at a bunch of stuff and really good at the thing that matters most.

    This just doesn't cut it. First, you're parsing really small sample sizes (Jeffers doesn't even have 600 career PAs yet) and the second half of the statement is nonsense trying to excuse away a really big discrepancy between Jeffers' surface stats and his underlying metrics. In 2020, Jeffers' difference between wOBA and xwOBA was .003. In 2021, that difference was .010. In 2022, the difference is .065. I'm not even that high on Ryan Jeffers, I think he's an average-ish starting catcher for a few years. But getting that player in the second round is a hell of a draft pick.

    I mean, one doesn't have to look far to see the last paragraph in action: Griffin Jax. A marginal third round pick taken because the Twins liked his slider. Sure, he didn't work out as a starter because he couldn't develop much past that slider but now he looks like he'll be a multi-year contributor at the very least (barring injury). That's not an accident. Sure, the Twins may have taken a different third rounder the year before that fell on their face, that's baseball for you. But they intentionally targeted something about Jax that made them think he will be an MLB contributor and he's now contributing to the MLB team based on that single skill they targeted and refined.

    Well, the 2018 draft is still very much a work in progress and Jeffers was a college draft pick so it's not really surprising he's leading the second round pack in June of 2022. But it should also be noted that Larnach (though also a college pick so keep that in mind) is around fifth in overall WAR from the first round but was only the 20th pick of the round. This grading scale seems impossibly difficult, where one must draft an All-Star or better to receive a decent grade. The reality of the draft is that if you get a competent regular from the first round every year, your baseball team will be very good. If you get more than one competent regular from any single draft, you had a very good draft. And I simply do not buy into the statement that anything after the third round is a crapshoot. That's where coaching and development comes into play; yes, the later rounds are more random but that's where good franchises pick the flawed players they like and try to coach them into being an MLB player. Dismissing those rounds out of hand ignores a big reason why the Tampa Bay Rays are perennially excellent while other franchises can't win after a half decade of top picks.

    You're too harsh on Jeffers. While his conventional stats are slightly ugly (but remember that while his 74 wRC+ looks terrible, league catchers only have an 87 wRC+), his advanced stats tell a different story. His wOBA is .269 while his xwOBA is .340. His barrel rate is 93rd percentile. His xSLG is 77th percentile. Given Jeffers' defense, even if he only climbs up to a league average 87 wRC+ (and his batted ball stats look like he's better than that), he's a valuable starting catcher.

    Same. I never had anything against Sanchez personally, I just hated his player profile: all power, no contact, absolutely horrific behind the plate. He was not a guy I wanted on this team but the Twins sprinkled their magic catcher pixie dust on him, which I didn't think possible.

    I hated Gary Sanchez being on this team and am very glad to be wrong about that. Sanchez is setting himself up for a nice little payday this winter.

    This thread is locked but I just saw this. The answer is absolutely not. The differences between Stu and posting guidelines are entirely based on editorial rules versus community rules. Whether a person is a caretaker has nothing to do with it, as they are still under the umbrella of community guidelines, just like all other community members (including myself, even as a site owner). If anyone wishes for more clarification, I am always available via private message and am willing to discuss it with you.

    There is no denigration of users happening here. There's a difference between "there are literally thousands of users on this site, most of which I do not know personally" and "there are two dozen writers on the site, all of which are known personally by the owners". I'm not saying users are untrustworthy, I'm saying I rarely know if a specific user is trustworthy because there are literally ten thousand of you. Whereas the couple of dozen *paid* writers for the site are very well known entities. The difference between those groups is obvious for obvious reasons. In no way, shape, or form am I saying anyone here is "bad" or "untrustworthy" but the scope of community management is wildly different than curated content creation by a select few.

    There's a lot of misunderstanding here. There are different parts of Twins Daily and not all of them fall strictly under the same umbrella. The front page news stories have guidelines and are managed by other owners. The forums (and, to an extent, blogs) are my domain as community manager and technical lead. The various parts of the site aren't perfectly synchronized because they're run by different people with slightly different agendas and different opinions. Would I personally have published Stu's story? Yes, because I believe Stu's reputation as a satirist deserves more leash; it's part of his schtick as a writer. Equally so, I have a community to run and cannot allow the same leeway to Random Joe off the street, whose reputation and motives have earned no such leeway.

    If it was funny, probably. I’m vaxxed and pretty cautious about COVID and know plenty of people around me whose precautions are beyond ridiculous to the point of them almost satirizing themselves. Satire is almost always funny when you approach the fringes of any opinion or stance. That’s the point of it, really.

    I was blissfully unaware of Stu’s piece until half an hour ago so you’ll have to talk to someone else about that. People seem to be under the impression that TD is some monolithic entity and that is far from the case. I am the community manager, most of the rest of the site is someone else’s problem.

    Stu is paid to sometimes push boundaries through satire. It's basically his professional reputation. When we start paying someone with a similar reputation to do the same, they can be like Stu. Until then, they can keep their poor attempts at satire and boring agendas to themselves. I don't care how that comes across, that's the reality of the situation. Some people, due to reputation, experience, and ability are given different slack than the typical user.

    I'm pretty lukewarm on Obi-Wan after two episodes but, as expected, McGregor is killing it in the role. He's so ****ing good as Kenobi.

    I see this said a lot and the Twins have zero control over what's happening here and when their contract is up, I suspect they're going to have some pretty harsh words to Bally over what has happened. Remember, the Twins signed their television contract with an entirely different entity, Fox Sports. Bally bought Fox Sports several years later, well into the Twins contract, and that's when most of these shenanigans started happening. The Twins have little to no recourse to take action against Bally until their contract is up for renewal, which happens... after next season, maybe? It's not immediate but not that far away, either. The Twins would love nothing more than for everyone in the area to be able to reasonably access their content. It's Bally that's doing this, not the Twins.

    People are relatively confident in Miranda because last year's breakout came with increased contact skill, bat speed, and ability to drive the ball. Those things don't really "go away"; the hope behind Miranda is largely scouting-based, not necessarily stat-based. Obviously, he could still fall flat on his face against major league pitching but that applies to any prospect. With that said, some are all too willing to directly translate MiLB success to the expectation of immediate MLB success. It usually doesn't work that way, which is why smart front offices don't routinely bank on unproven prospects, especially at multiple positions at once.
