  1. I don't think this story broke from the Rays camp, so no.
  2. Not to mention the fact that it's really none of our business, doubly so because Molitor has owned his substance abuse and moved on from it. It's not as if the guy got drunk, hopped in his car, and killed a family.
  3. Molitor has kept his nose clean for at least a decade. At some point, we need to stop holding things against people, particularly things that only involved their private life. It doesn't mean we need to forget those things happened but after a time, a guy deserves to be judged by his recent behavior and not bad behavior three decades old.
  4. I agree. If they haven't made a decision within a week of the conclusion of the WS, then I'll start asking questions. Right now, I couldn't care less.
  5. Think long and hard about this statement and then imagine a world where Terry Ryan hired a manager before any other team. What would your opinion have been had that happened? You've set up a situation where, in your eyes, Ryan cannot win no matter what he does. Hire early, he's phoning it in and didn't properly evaluate outside candidates. Wait to make a decision and he's stalling to provide "cover". That tells a lot more about you than it does Terry Ryan.
  6. This. There's absolutely nothing wrong with hiring a manager after the season is complete. If potential candidates were dropping like flies, it'd be a different situation... But that's not the case. The Twins have reportedly narrowed it down to 2-3 guys and they're unlikely to lose any of them to another team while they're in the hunt for the Twins' manager job. Taking a few days to reflect on the decision is the right thing to do.

  10. There is no delay in selection. The World Series hasn't even gone to a third game yet.
  11. I always thought of him as a corner guy. Turns out, so did a few other people: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/6/13/3081952/prospect-of-the-day-wil-myers-of-kansas-city-royals-scouting-report http://www.hardballtimes.com/making-the-comparison-wil-myers1/ Not exactly a ringing endorsement even from the people who thought he *could* play center.
  12. That's fair. I've been one of the most vocal opponents of that trade from day one... I still don't like the thinking behind it but that comes down to strategy and opinion, which differ. There is more than one way to skin a cat and all that jazz. But the trade worked in the short-term. I still think it was folly to expect that kind of jump in year one but it's certainly playing into the Royals' favor in year two. That cannot be argued at this point. But again, I wasn't against the trade as much as I was the timing. How the Royals finish 2014 and how they play in 2015-2016 is going to factor in on the overall success of the trade and at this point, we simply don't have that information. Either way, it wasn't a failure. The Royals are in the World Series.
  13. I don't think it matters one bit but yeah, Hughes will get the nod on Opening Day unless he falls apart in ST.
  14. While there are definitely feelings of burnout and "ugh, second verse, same as the first", the primary reasoning to scale back the handbook this year is because we're splitting up the content. We'll be offering handbooks more regularly than once a year. Instead of trying to assemble one massive book that quickly becomes outdated, we're choosing which content is most relevant at a particular time and writing about that. Then in December/January, we'll release more content that is relevant to that period of the offseason. That, and time. The handbook is a massive effort on all our parts. The more we can break it into pieces, the more we maintain a level of sanity... And it's nice to be able to write about something completely different two months from now without fear of the content becoming outdated in two weeks after spending hundreds of man hours assembling the bloody thing.
  15. I lean toward Molitor but have warmed up on Mientkiewicz in recent weeks. Not mentioned in this article is that we have slightly more information on Molitor... Which makes this discussion hard to qualify Dougie's merits. But we do know that Molitor doesn't shy away from sabr stats and advanced metrics. That's a huge plus in his favor. This isn't terribly surprising, as he was a cerebral player who actually improved in his 30s. He's obviously a student of the game and isn't afraid to embrace new concepts as they arrive. Does Doug have the same ability, a desire to change approaches as new information is discovered? I don't know... He was a fiery player but I'm not sure he was a cerebral player. And after 13 years of Gardenhire, a guy who often did things because "that's the way they've always been done", I lean toward the guy who I know is going to evolve with the times, even if he's a year older than Gardenhire. Of course, Mientkiewicz could be capable of doing the same... We simply don't know.
  16. Lewis Thorpe cannot crack the top ten list in the organization. Wow. That says all you need to know about the Twins system right now.
  17. Well, I think we can safely say the Royals' gross ticket income was somewhere between $7-11m more than 2013. That doesn't include the implied increase in television revenue the team will receive next time their contract is renewed. That's a significant chunk of change. Not enough to cover a guy like James Shields but it's a significant chunk of change. It's an interesting thought exercise, trying to physically attach dollar revenue to improved play.
  18. Yep. I'm not arguing, just curious to know the actual expenditure by the average fan. It's not something I think about a whole lot.
  19. Someone actually did the legwork on the average cost of an MLB game per stadium. Kauffman clocks in at $192 per family of four, or roughly $48 per person. http://www.azcentral.com/story/money/business/consumer/2014/07/12/cost-attend-majorleague-baseball-game/12578975/
  20. I don't spend anything close to $75 per person per game... And that's not including material costs of food and whether KC gets revenue from Kauffman parking (I literally have zero idea of the parking situation in Kauffman, having never been there).
  21. Yeah, one would hope that Kansas City will continue to support the team in higher numbers the more they win, I was just surprised at the small bump they received this year... After all, they had an 86 win season in 2013.
  22. Holy crap, I thought their attendance was better than this: 2014: 1,956,482 2013: 1,750,754 2012: 1,739,859 That's only 2,600 more people through the turnstiles per game since 2012.
  23. Baseball's rule changes completely altered the playoff landscape. In the 2000s, every playoff team had a legit chance of winning it all. The WC often faced the second-best team in the league, they didn't even have to face the best competition if it came from the same division. They had five games to advance and with a lone wildcard, that team could often align their rotation to compete to the best of their ability. I don't dislike the rule changes but they've drastically changed the ability of the WC to compete. The WC team has to burn one of their best pitchers in a single game playoff. If they win, then they have to hit the road and face the best team in the league at a distinct disadvantage. Seeing a WC team play in the World Series was pretty commonplace in the 2000s. I don't think we'll see it happen nearly as often with the new playoff schedule.
  24. I don't believe Meyer, Sano, and Buxton will be the only good Twins players, I just think the team will struggle until a few of the blue-chippers emerge. There are several good role players on the Twins and in the high minors - May, Arcia, Tonkin, Vargas, Santana, etc... But they're more Michael Cuddyer than Miguel Cabrera. Guys you need to succeed long-term (2-4 WAR players, maybe) but not MVP-level talent.
