Matthew William Magill was born on November 10, 1989.

The Los Angeles Dodgers drafted him in round 31 of the 2008 MLB Draft. He reached the Major Leagues in 2013, making six starts with a 6.51 ERA for the Dodgers. Magill didn't get back to the big leagues until 2016 with the Cincinnati Reds, where he allowed three earned runs in 4.1 relief innings.

He signed a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins on January 24, 2018. The Twins selected his contract in late April, and he tossed 2.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen against the Reds in his first appearance for them. It was the first of six outings on the season where Magill got at least six outs without allowing a run. He finished the season with a 3.81 ERA over 56.2 innings. This was inflated by a stretch of six consecutive appearances between late June and early July in which Magill allowed at least one earned run. He allowed multiple runs in three of those. Outside of that stretch, Magill was one of the Twins best relievers that season.

Minnesota brought him back in 2019. He began the season on the injured list with a shoulder injury, but the team activated him on April 26th. Magill didn't allow a run in 13 of his first 14 relief appearances that season, but was tagged for five runs in 0.2 innings on June 2nd against the Tampa Bay Rays. This began a downturn that led to the Twins designating him for assignment just after the All-Star break. He was traded to the Seattle Mariners for cash, owning a 4.45 ERA in 28 games for Minnesota at the time of this deal.

Magill turned his season around with the Mariners, and even began getting closer reps for a struggling Seattle club. He had a 3.63 ERA with five saves after heading out west. Magill made 11 appearances for the Mariners during the COVID shortened 2020 season, but finished the year on the 60-day injured list due to a shoulder strain. He was never able to get fully healthy after that, eventually retiring after the 2022 season.

The Texas Rangers have hired Magill as a mental health coach.
