Game summaries?

I'm always surprised when I come to the Twins Daily site [which is awesome] and find that on the front page I can't find some simple summaries of last night's game. Or anywhere, really. Sometimes if I scroll through the blogs page I find some stuff about the previous game, but even that's not consistent.

I feel I must be missing something. Am I a dolt? I just want to come to the site and find a collection of blogs or articles about yesterday's game. Maybe nobody else wants this, I guess. Find that hard to believe.

Love the Twins. Love this site. But I don't always get to watch them, and reading the beat writers' with "access" wrapups don't do much for me. I want to hear from all you guys and ladies.

This is a great question, and it's one that we have discussed since the site's onset. Do people want to see some sort of game report from each and every Twins game? Occasionally, one of the Twins Daily guys will get some access and can add some quotes, but many times we don't. What would people want to see from such a report?

Thanks Seth! For myself, I know that most people on this site have far more insight into the team than I do. I don't personally really care about quotes, I care more about analysis. For example, SoCalTwins fan posted the link to his article on Yahoo named Minnesota Twins' Win Gives Hope for Future. In it he's talking about Hicks, Dozier, and Pressley. Another great example is your Minor League Report itself, Seth. If there were something similar for the Twins themselves it would be great.

I don't know if this would fall under a daily game recap thing or not, but one area I'd like to increase my knowledge about is in-game strategy. We spend a lot of time on this site talking about roster moves, past present & future, which is great, and a lot of time discussing advanced metrics (which, to be honest, I'm kinda blah on, but to each their own), but not as much time on in-game strategy. That's something that maybe could be addressed using examples from recent games, things such as when you bunt in late innings and when you let the player hit away; what are the advantages and disadvantages of pulling the infield in; which base should outfielder be throwing to and why, just exactly how does one put together a lineup - what qualities are desired in each position. etc.

I know a lot of people who post on this site played the game and coached/managed, so this may be old news to them, but for someone who has basically been a spectator all his life, this is stuff I'm just starting to pick up on.

I'd love to see game summaries for the big league club posted. I love reading the minor league report daily to see a quick synopsis of what happened the day before.

Some history and discussion before a call to action.....

As Seth has mentioned, we have debated this since before the site has opened. Initially, we decided that what limited bandwidth we all had would be dedicated towards what we wanted to write about, rather than try to copy something that you can find in half a dozen spots already.

But recently we've reopened that talk a little amongst ourselves. Why?

1) I think people really like them especially following a win.

2) It doesn't need to be a boilerplate game recap (Intro, summary, quotes, close). In fact, I think we could do some really interesting things with game recaps, sort of breaking the mold. Off the top of my head...

- As suggested above, go into the sabrmetrics of game theory, like win probabilities or expected runs, or even the impact of a different lineup long term

- Use an event in the game as a launching point for some research or to explain why a statistic is (or isn't) important

- Just mess with the format. Instead of descriptions of what happened and quotes, put in nine questions the game raised, or a bullet point story or a minute-by-minute game diary of watching the game at home or whatever.

When I first started TwinsGeek.com, I did a lot of riffing on topics that started with a game story. It's an effective way to illustrate things and challenge your own writing, because it's so fresh in people's minds.

What has stopped us from pursuing this lately is the same thing that has stopped us from doing it in the first place - bandwidth. But I'll say this - if people want to throw their attempts at game recaps on blogs - especially if they're well-written or creative or go away from the boilerplate story - we'll pay special attention to them. We would love to have them.
