He was born in San Angelo, Texas and attended Arizona State. He played both baseball and football at ASU, playing as a defensive back and as a place kicker (in 1968, he led the NCAA in scoring by kick). He was born in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and went to high school in Graterford, Pennsylvania. He was drafted by Pittsburgh in the twelfth round in 1983. Born and raised in London, Ohio, he attende Ohio State and was signed by Minnesota as a free agent in 1965.
