  1. Alas we will never know what was asked for and what was offered. These kind of details often get leaked, but never with the Twins. I'd still like to know what the snag was in the Span to the Reds deal last July.
  2. Picking up the trash the Royals deem unfit really gets me excited. Perhaps one day too the Twins can strive to have the quality rotation the Royals annully run to the mound.
  3. Mark Bowman of MLB.com and Jerry Crasnick of ESPN are reporting that the Braves and Upton are close to a deal. This would be another blow to the Twins offseason plans of rebuilding the rotation as moving Denard Span to Atlanta for some of their young talented (cheap) pitching seemed like a perfect fit. Certainly there are other places Span can be moved to, but taking Atlanta off the table is a big setback. Atlanta may still have interest in another outfielder even if they do sign Upton, but they'd likely be looking for a corner outfielder with a different offensive skill set, namely Josh Willingham.
  4. Does no one else find it disturbing that we are mostly in agreement that the Twins need to trade for starting pitching because free agency will eat up too much of the payroll? I mean, KC is even taking on large and terrible contracts. We're basing our free agent predictions on the HOPE that the Twins payroll will be the same as last year while the other clubs, except for the crooks in Miami, look to be increasing payroll. San Diego is really the front funner for Dan Haren? Milwaukee, Baltimore and Seattle are taking a serious look at Josh Hamilton? It can't be long before the average MLB payroll is +$100 million and the Twins are once again at the back of the pack. Edit: I realized it is early and we really have nothing to base a Twins 2013 payroll on other than assumption so I withdraw my complaint pending a payroll analysis among the other 29 teams come April.
  5. There are more male baseball fans than female, yet when you go to Target Field, the male/female ratio is pretty even. Among the females attending the games, it seems like half are wearing a pink Mauer jersey and the other half are holding up 'Marry me Mauer' signs. Attendance would suffer. Die hard baseball fans who populate sites like this and waste our time analyzing stats on Fangraphs, contracts on Cot's and scream at each other about who should be the 25th man on the roster only make up a small percentage of the people who attend the games
  6. To be clear, we're talking about the same Jack Hannahan who has a career OPS of .681 against righties? Sounds pretty silly to waste a roster spot on a guy for a .14 OPS improvement to platoon with a guy who's only had one full MLB season under his belt. Just because a guy bats left handed doesn't mean he automatically hits righties well.
  7. Knock on wood. Ryan has said he wants to get three new starters, though that may have been more of a dream than a goal. That being said, Diamond has one spot, and you'd think Hendriks is the front runner over the rest of the mess seeing as he is the only one outside of the rehabbing* Gibson who has any kind of upside. *Also known as Super 2 insurance.
  8. With a quagmire covering 3/4ths of the infield, it makes me wonder why the Twins haven't been connected to any Jeff Keppinger rumors. I want the Twins to save their free agency bucks for starting pitching, but I can't imagine he'd be that prohibitively expensive.
  9. If he's more reasonable than Baker/Feldmen why not? The Twins should know by now how to use him; pre-emptively throw him in the pen to counter his expected April control meltdown, move him to the rotation mid-May to benefit from his June/July K/9 increase and WHIP decrease then move him at the deadline before his late season swoon kills his image. For a guy labeled "inconsistant", he's extremely predictable. If a manager/GM had the sack to use him based on his historical tendancies a team could get some good value out of him.
  10. Which does beg the question, why does Ryan have so much more difficulty evaluating pitchers than hitters? In my opinion, no more soft tossers. If you can't reasonably predict a 7.0 K/9 for a guy, stop looking at him. Most of the perenial winners tolerate one, maybe two such arms in the rotation, and the Twins are already going to fill one spot with Diamond. It's not reasonable to expect the rotation to achieve this in one season, but they need to start the process now.
  11. I'm not upset that Ryan didn't sign either pitcher, there are better arms out there and hopefully Ryan is saving his budget to pay an actual front of the rotation arm $12 million instead of two back end guys $6M each. However, because guys like Feldman are getting $6M, a guy like Shawn Marcum is now going to want to double that seeing as he is twice the pitcher Feldmen is. If this inflation holds true the problem will occur when Ryan gets gunshy at deal time and can't find the courage to pull the trigger on one of the bigger names because the money or years frighten him. He will then be left holding a bag full of money that can only be spent to overpay for the rest of the dredge that remains on the free agency floor.
  12. I would have been happy with Feldmen as a sleeper pick up, but when you pay a guy $6 million it kind of erases the UNDERRATED/SLEEPER label from your title. If the Twins pay a starter $6 million, he's probably going to be expected to 2-3 starter. 6 million isn't gonna get you a #2 or even a top notch #3. Have you not been following this team? The Twins annually wedge a $6 million pitcher into the 2 spot regardless of his actual talents. This team hasn't overpayed for pitching unless they wore a Twins uniform the previous year.
  13. Terry Ryan doesn't have Fangraphs bookmarked. $6 million is a 2-3 for the Twins.
  14. I would have been happy with Feldmen as a sleeper pick up, but when you pay a guy $6 million it kind of erases the UNDERRATED/SLEEPER label from your title. If the Twins pay a starter $6 million, he's probably going to be expected to 2-3 starter.
  15. The Cubs just gave Scott Feldman, a back end of the rotation/swingman, a $6 million base salary plus incentives. The Cubs certainly seem to be setting the market for low-end starting pitching options with this signing and the generous deal they gave to Scott Baker. I'd guess moves like this indicate there will be little to no starting pitching bargain shopping this holiday season, even to get a guy who should profile to be a number five starter, Terry Ryan is still going to have to overpay. I sure hope he has a few deals in the works for young controlable starters because I'm going to be pretty disappointed if the Twins walk away from this offseason having to overpay for a soft tossing number 4 starter like Joe Saunders or Brandon McCarthy and still be forced to pay $8 million+. In doing so, Ryan would then have to try to con the fanbase into believing that one of these bums is actually an ace.
  16. Good news for Rochester I guess. Although I don't hink he's done much catching in the last several years.
  17. I agree that the timing seems odd. They still had him under contract for another 4 years. I would have wanted to wait at least one more year if not two to see that he can stay healthy. He's beginning to look like a fragile player with injuries really cutting into his last two seasons.
  18. That would be a steal for the Twins. Too good to happen. Taking off Willingham and Span's contracts would also free up a lot if money to use on a free agent starter.
  19. This team would benefit more if they spent $7 million on Stephen Drew and traded for Tony Cingrani than if they spent $7 million on Joe Saunders and traded for Didi Gregorius. Trade for the young pitching, sign the free agent hitters, a team CAN find offensive value on the market, good pitching almost always requires overpaying.
  20. I'd buy it more if they actually got top prospects. Had D'arnaud and/or Syndergaard been included I'd buy it, but I don't think that package they got back was too impressive considering.
  21. While I'm looking forward to seeing him pitch, I'm not entirely sure having 5 Gibson's gives the Twins a top 15 rotation. Now if we make sure to snag Verlander's sweaty jock out of the visitors locker room to throw in our cloning machine.....
  22. Polanco is interesting but probably a good call. If there's one thing you can count on, shortstops with even a modest offensive ceiling are about as coveted as anything.
  23. Great post, but I can't get on board with the approach if the front office refuses to aknowledge a rebuild is underway. They had the chance to trade vets for prospects this year and failed to drum up enough interest to do so despite rumors about Span, Morneau, Willingham and Perkins. All they managed to do was bungle the timing on the Liriano trade. Hard to trust that there is an actual gameplan right now, I'm riding the opinion that they're just winging it at this point until there is evidence to the contrary.
  24. So do you think Illitch simply wrote out a check from his personal (not Tigers) bank account and picked up Prince Fielder and Torii Hunter? Actually, if I remember correctly, that's exactly what he did for Fielder...He definitely told his GM to go get him, period. Not to mention that Illitch got Comerica built with only 40% of the burden on the tax payers as opposed to 66% tax payer burden for Target Field. Illitch paid $180 million for his stadium while 10 years later the Pohlad's only chipped in $172 million despite the enormous amount of additional revenue the MLB label was producting.
  25. Time to calm down everyone, the Marlins totally redeemed themselves, they just signed John Maine.
