    And it was a looooooong journey to get him to the point of being an average reliever. I'd expect an equally long and even more unlikely journey for Gilmartin to match him.

    I'd rather have Duensing for one season. Gilmartin is a soft tossers who will get eaten alive in the pen. Eaten alive in the rotation too. He'll be back by April.

    Soft tossing lefties belong in the NL anyway. Not sure that an 88 MPH fastball will work out for a rookie out of the pen though. Odds are he'll get returned. Acutally odds are nearly all will get returned.

    I thought MLB.com was streaming or at least posting Rule V selections but I can't find it. Anyone see where it is? They need a serious revamp of their site, that thing has been a difficult navigation for about a decade.

    Berardino thinks Graham is the pick if he gets to the Twins: https://twitter.com/MikeBerardino/status/542946215508185088 So we can probably cross him off the list considering how the last couple of weeks have played out for Berardino, he's on a bit of a cold streak.

    During losing seasons, two of the four most anticipated times of the year are the Winter Meetings and the trade deadline. It's funny that this would be so, as I always look forward to them only spend my work day trying to control the urge to type in all caps out of sheer frustration.

    I'd guess the Red Sox and A's would argue that Bill James won them plenty of games. If you're implying that it is impossible for a man not on the diamond to help win a game, then we might as well get rid of the managers, coaches and GMs too.

    FTFY Molly. I wanted the team to go outside it's comfort zone for a new manager mostly just to prove they had the stones to dip into the unknown, but I'll freely acknowledge that Molitor appears to have most of the qualities I'd most prefer in my team's manager.

    Sure, but Chris Sale is worth more than all of them, likely so is Abreu. Quintana would be pretty high too. I'm not sure why we would look at each organization and only look at the prospects.

    Like hire a manager who likes to play station to station baseball and a GM who likes everyone to hit the ball 500 feet.

    Yeah, 87 was not a great staff despite having a Cy Young Award winner and a HOFer. That was reflected by their meager 85 regular season wins. You can get lucky, few teams have recently but it's possible. However, I think to give your team a realistic chance, you need to put together an elite staff and hope it's enough.

    I do too, perhaps partially because I like the chemestry when your core guys came up together, but it certainly does look like the on the 10 year anniversary of their WS championship they are trying to copy the formula. That year they signed Jermaine Dye, Tag Iguchi and Aj Pierzynski, along with they back of their bullpen Dustin Hermanson and Luis Vizcaino while trading for Carl Everett, Freddie Garcia, Orlando Hernandez and Jose Contreras. Obviously some moves were better than others, but enough worked out.

    I think we're past the point where simple post season "entries" are something we place as our goal. I'll be happy to see the White Sox crash and burn, but they are putting together a pitching staff that looks like it may be capable of taking home with World Series. I doubt they will, but at least they recognize what their pitchers need to look like. They Twins haven't put together a pitching staff that looked like it could win a World Series in 24 years. The last time the Twins actually fielded a staff capable of winning a championship, they actually did. Three studs up front and a rock solid back of the bullpen and you give yourself a chance.

    Let's all pray there isn't a third one detailing what happened in the clubhoust after that passionate Hrbek/Morris embrace.

    Seperately, I don't think I really like any of the White Sox moves, but combined, they now have few holes. When you put it in those terms, it really puts it in perspective, the Twins should be so lucky if their remaining concerns were lack of offense from their catcher and the development of one of their top prospects.

    This just in: Houston, Colorado and a "mystery" team are all involved in talks for Ryan Vogelsong, Stephen Drew and Dan Uggla.

    Yeah, it certainly looks like they're taking the Royals lead and adding flamethrowers throught the pen and doing their best to get them in the rotation also. Only Perkins can hold a candle to the butt kicking these teams will bring in the later innings. That is, only the healthy Perkins.

    LaRoache is a good defender though, I'd guess unless they're platooning two guys who they paid $100 million, that Abreu will be getting most of the DH AB's. He likely will regress some, after all, if he didn't, a continued pace of a .964 OPS is going to have us talking HOF in a couple years. Still, even if you want to go extreme and use that 14.5% regression that Cespedes had in year two, Abreu is still putting up a .825 OPS, which is better than any player the Twins had last year.

    Actually, looking at that pattern it apears like a great time to buy low on him in an odd numbered year. He seems to enjoy those.

    I would enjoy the Twins being a mystery team, but I don't think I'd like a 7-year deal to a pitcher on the wrong side of 30.

    Thanks AJ. As fans, all we can do is speculate on the type of person the athletes we cheer for really are (and often over-speculate). Thanks for some actual insight and the story.

    Um, shouldn't that go without saying? Why the hell is there a 'might' in there? That sentance should be devoid of all 'mights.'
