  1. I'd like to know if Falvey specifically mentioned those names, or if Park mentioned these guys and Falvey agreed they were possibilities. I wonder because I don't like that Graterol isn't included in that list.
  2. The left side of the Twins infield. If I'm paying good money, I want starting pitchers who can get outs all on their own. Which is why I'm starting to lean toward signing Rich Hill. Please everybody, don't kill me, I have a family!
  3. *****Moderator Note***** Please stay on topic, the article presented three specific free agent scenarios. Unsolicited economic lessons only serve to steer conversation away from this interesting case study.
  4. I'm not really high on any of the pitchers available, I guess I like Ryu a bit more than Bumgarner, but getting either would just feel like more of a moral victory to me. I might like option #2 actually, as I do want starters who can miss bats and both Hill and Smyly have a history of doing so. Aside from having a big name, I don't know that I'd buy into much if any performance upgrade from Bumgarner over Hill, at least in 2020. Of course that bat-missing caveat would make me want to stay away from Kintzler, can we swap him out for Betances instead? Oh, burying the lede clearly, Donaldson sure would be fun!
  5. With this team’s infield defense I would t be surprised if the team isn’t considering Keuchel at all.
  6. I guess that would depend on if you were thinking of early 30’s Maddox who was still elite or late 30’s Maddox who no longer was. I kind of forgot Pavano got turned into a bit of a punchline at the end, I didn’t mean to use him as a dig though. Until his final year he was solidly useful, just not the kind of difference maker the team needed.
  7. The Verlander factor is the only reason I’m even remotely interested in Bumgarner. But Verlander’s ability to maintain his velocity and strikeout percentage into his twilight years seems to be unique. Barring injury, Bumgarner probably isn’t likely to completely implode, but based on Tom’s piece, I’d think it’s more likely that Bumgarner resembles a Carl Pavano than a Justin Verlander. That’s still a useful pitcher, but not the kind that will advance a team further in the playoffs.
  8. Thanks Tom. I was in the fence about Bumgarner to begin with, now I’m leaning against. I don’t like Teheran though. I want want a guy who could take the next step and lead a playoff rotation, even if that chance isn’t terribly high, and I don’t think a guy who throws 89-90 even has that chance.
  9. *** Moderator Note*** Stu provides some of the assortment of entertainment and reading material for the site, it's what gets people in the door. Just as you may choose to abstain from your local bar the night they have a country act performing, you are also not required to read every article here. And just as the audience members at the bar will be asked to leave if they throw bottles, heckle and disrupt the show, we will ask posters to leave if they do the same here. Stay on topic and stop trying to derail the thread.
  10. Hold on to this contact Van. I was honestly worried about getting Bumgarner to Minnesota because he strikes me as a Dukes of Hazard kind of guy. You might have a trump card here though. Any idea if his daughter's Daisy Dukes are store bought or hand crafted?
  11. Geez, how'd Wolfson get the Rangers, Astros, White Sox and Ken Rosenthal to all get in on this con?
  12. I've got a plan to make this start working in the Twins favor. Minnesota needs to start producing more baseball wives. How about Target Field hosts a singles mixer for the away players the first night of every series?
  13. I would really like Gausman, but only for the pen, he doesn't have any offspeed pitch. I don't like his FB/splitter combo but it could work in relief. I think if he went to the pen full time, going back to the slider instead of the splitter could make him lights out.
  14. Yeah, going with conventional trade targets may not open many doors, might have to be quite a bit outside the box to entice a less predictable trade partner. I'm still interested in guys with top end stuff who maybe haven't reached their potential.
  15. You're missing 90% of the pieces, and free agency is not that simple. And it doesn't make me feel better. I wan't Wheeler, but I'm not going to go pointing fingers when we know nothing about what's going on.
  16. You don't know that. The Rangers were out before the Twins. There will soon be 29 teams out of the running. We likely will never know all of the offers and we will likely never know all of Wheeler's preferences and demands. If the Twins don't get Wheeler, can't we just be disappointed that we didn't get him without having to over-villainize someone?
  17. That they there were at least six teams trying to get Wheeler and the Twins are one of the 5 that won't get him?
  18. If it’s not Cole, Strasburg or Wheeler I’d probably prefer a trade. There are other free agent pitchers I’d take, but none I’d want to run out Gsme 1 vs the Yankees.
  19. They weren’t at the time though. Those guys were all considered 2nd tier starters in their free agent class and now look terrible in hindsight. I want free agent pitchers, but there’s certainly some cautionary tails right in our own backyard. But pretending the Twins haven’t used the free agent market to acquire free agent pitchers that were top 10-20ish overall free agents is quite inaccurate.
  20. Wheeler has reportedly told the Rangers they are out of the running: https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/rangers/2019/12/04/source-free-agent-zack-wheeler-has-eliminated-the-rangers-from-consideration/ I'm only interested in this because it sounds like Wheeler told them they are out, not the other way around. I'd really like to hear what the impetus for Wheeler's rejection is. Though getting that info is probably a pipe dream. Also, I'm really surprised none of the Yankees, Astros, Angels or Dodgers are in on this. Less so with the Dodgers I guess as they've made it clear the past several years that they don't want to do long term deals. They aren't all going to get Cole and Strasburg.
  21. Ervin Santana, Phil Hughes, Ricky Nolasco and Lance Lynn might disagree.
  22. The problem is, if you pass on all the other pitchers waiting around for Cole and A ) his offer ends up being something crazy like 275M or B ) he doesn't have interest in coming here, the team is screwed. As much as I want Cole, the Twins have to make sure they secure pitching help, and gambling that they can get the best pitcher in the game when he's ready to negotiate in February risks securing nothing.
  23. I don't get why you keep bringing up Alonso. Is someone suggesting the Twins have a player equivalent to Alonso who they should trade for Chapman? I don't see anyone suggesting they do or they should. Chapman is 26, has a really good bat despite playing in a pitchers ballpark, great defense and draws a ton of walks. That ability to draw walks is a big safety net to help prevent him from going belly-up; he'll get on base a lot which means he likely won't slump. It's why Rosario, Schoop and Cron can go ice cold, while Polanco, Kepler and Cruz can ride out a hitless streak and still not kill the lineup. With his excellent on base skills, well above average power and elite defense, he looks like Scott Rolen, who was rarely a sexy player but ended up one of the best 3B of all time without anyone really talking about it.
