Article: Your Turn: What Do You Want From A GM?
FormerMinnasotan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
One important thing for me is a GM who has player development as a high priority. The Twins have far too many prospects, especially starting pitchers who do well in the minors and fail miserably. Since the Twins won't ever sign an ace, they need to fully develop a pitcher who can meet those credentials. Also with player development, when you have a top talent (see Buxton) you actually develop him more thourghly so he is ready to take on Major League pitching.- 165 replies

So disappointing to see Gonsalves and Berrios struggle so much. I mean since we can't just go out and buy an ace it would be GREAT if we could have a highly touted pitching prospect ACUTUALLY turn out. I mean then in reality who do we have that can be a potential staff ace if not Berrios or Gonsalves? Kohl Stewart? Well strike outs are not as much as his first few starts of the season. Tyler Jay? Maybe, but at the same time it is not known for sure if Jay can remain a starter. Lewis Thorpe? Well most of the questions on Thorpe will be answered next year since if healthy ge should get a whole season to pitch. Bottom line, Berrios and Gonsalves right now represent the Twins best hopes for a near top to top of the rotation starter. If they fail, the rest of the higher ranked pitching prospects have as more questions yet to be answered than Berrios and Gonsalves.

I see Gonsalves is slated to make another start for Fort Meyer's. Why? After his last start he should have been promoted to Chattanooga. I mean he only has a 1.21 ERA. Why do the Twins not want to promote Gonsalves? He has absolutely nothing left to prove in A+ ball. Since Gonsalves was drafted the Twins have been real weak in promoting him as it always seems Gonsalves spends far too long in every minor league affiliate thus far.

Great game for Jay!! I think though he will spend more time in Fort Meyer's simply because this is his first year starting and I feel that the Twins want to see Jay become more consistent as a starter. Also if it wasn't for the fact Jay will likely see an innings limit this year (for obvious reason) Jay might be sent to Chattanooga. Oh well he'll be there at the start of next season.

Article: Where Are The Prospects?
FormerMinnasotan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Plus for a 21 year old in his 1st time in the bigs he doesn't have the "deer in the headlights" look either in post game interviews or during the game. Once he adjusts better to MLB hitters he will be good. Plus it is well documented since his earliest days in the minors that he is a workaholic and works so hard to perfect his craft, even his big league teammates see that work ethic. Talent gets you so far, hard work seals the deal.- 71 replies

I think Berrios will pan out just fine for the Twins. He has done well in spots, but has yet to get it all together. Berrios is only 21, and only has 3 starts in the bigs. He doesn't seem to have the timidness of other past prospects (Kyle Gibson, Liam Hendricks, ect), and has the pitch selection of a high end prospect. Next in line after Berrios it will be interesting to see how Kohl Stewart, Stephen Gonsalves, Tyler Jay, and Lewis Thorpe fare as they get closer to their MLB call-up.- 71 replies

Jay had a great start tonight!! 6 1/3 ip 5 hits 0 runs 2 walks 7 k's. He may be a bit up and down (it's to be expected), but he could be special as a starter if the Twins are patient with Jay.

I don't know anything about Fernando Romero. Is he a starting pitching prospect or a relief pitching prospect. All I have heard about Romero is the velocity of his fastball. Thanks.

For sure Gonsalves and Stewart need to move up to Chattanooga. I mean it is a transition from A+ ball to AA ball. If both move up now, the easier it will be for them next season and maybe make some September call up starts in 2017 and be able to compete for a rotation spot in 2018. As for Lewis Thorpe, so glad to hear he is progressing well. No need to rush Thorpe along too fast, if the Twins take the right approach I feel Thorpe will regain his status as a potential top of the rotation type starter.

Article: Give Alex Meyer A Chance To Start
FormerMinnasotan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nolasco needs to be traded asap. He is already reverting to the Nolasco of old. That would open a spot for two of our young pitchers (more than likely Duffey and Berrios) and then we go forward from there. -

We finally get to see Meyer start tonight. It'd be interesting if Meyer does well since Duffey and Berrios both have had solid starts this last time out. -
Demote Eades to Ft Meyers and promote Gonsalves to Chattanooga problem solved.

Article: It's Berrios Time!
FormerMinnasotan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good game #2 for Berrios. Not perfect, but even with still having a little bit of trouble with control, Berrios did what he had to. He'll get better with every start. For a 21 year old he has done well, I mean he has struck out 13 in 9 1/3 innings. The kid belongs, that is what is important right now. -
4 starts apiece this season for both Gonsalves and Stewart. But both pitched so much in Ft Meyers last year there is little to see IMO. Both have improved and done what is asked. My problem with Eades in AA and not Stewart or Gonsalves is Eades during his minor league career has never been remotely as good as Gonsalves and Stewart. If Eades was better I can accept that better but he is not.

Also with Jay's height and stature similar to Jose Berrios, and this being his first legitimate season as a starter he (and Lewis Thorpe) will be monitored very closely on innings this year.

This is why I feel Jay is going to spend most if not all his time this season in Ft Meyers. It is a transition from closer to starter. I don't think we will really see progress with Jay until next year.

FormerMinnasotan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My thought is because many might assume after a lackluster performance that he will be immediately sent back down since this is the Twins have that reputation. -
They both should be up now. And Ryan Eades needs to be demoted back to Ft Meyers, there is NO way Eades should be in Chattanooga over Gonsalves and Stewart, plus there should be an open spot since Brett Lee was let go. Insert Gonsalves and Stewart.

Article: It's Berrios Time!
FormerMinnasotan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think getting his first start out of the way was beneficial for Berrios. Now he can calm down and make the nessisary adjustments. I hope he sticks as it is obvious he has big league stuff, for him to go back to Rochester will do him no good really as he now needs to be challenged at the highest level. -
Article: Give Alex Meyer A Chance To Start
FormerMinnasotan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the Twins need to use Meyer like they did with Johan Santana and Fransisco Liriano and start Meyer out in the bullpen. And increase his workload if he succeeds and insert him in the rotation. Meyer is quite old for a AAA rotation and needs to simply face MLB hitting. Of the three pitchers (Berrios, Duffey, and Meyer) Meyer needs to stay up regardless of where he pitches. IMO, if Meyer does well next year's rotation will feature Meyer and Berrios and Duffey will be the odd man out. -
Looks like Jason Wheeler got promoted to Rochester as he is pitching today. So now with at least 2 slots open in Chattanooga will those two spots be filled by Gonsalves and Stewart? Both have dominated so far this season and with their success last year I just can't see any need to see if both pitchers are ready. Seems both Gonsalves and Stewart really did improve themselves in the off season. Time to take their "friendly rivalry" to Chattanooga and let Tyler Jay and Felix Jorge anchor Ft Meyers rotation.

Article: It's Berrios Time!
FormerMinnasotan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would not be surprised if Berrios struggles out of the gate, but from what I've seen from Berrios he knows how to adjust to make himself successful at the next level. Only issue I have is Berrios might over throw and have control issues as he does seem to be a high adrenaline pitcher at times. But once he settles in he will be good. People talk about his fastball, but the real reason he is a strike out pitcher is he KNOWS how to pitch and has 3 above average pitches and knows how and when to use them. On a personal note, I really want Berrios to succeed not so much because of the need for a top of the rotation starter, but because Berrios really WANTS to succeed and yet is humble off the field. -
http://m.milb.com/news/article/20160426174724472/gonsalves_unleashes_slider_in_latest_gem I came across this on milb.com. Sounds like yes, Gonsalves definitely knows how to pitch. Secondly it sounds as if Gonsalves' curve ball is definitely improved, and thirdly it sounds like Gonsalves likes his slider as well. Sounds like Gonsalves might be better than what most scouts expect from him.

Article: Give Alex Meyer A Chance To Start
FormerMinnasotan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If Berrios faulters I'm sure Meyer will get the next look. Part of Meyer's problem was his horrendous season last year. He is 26, so I don't think the Twins will be overly paitent with him. Time to put up now. -
Another outstanding start from Gonsalves. First off I wonder if Gonsalves has really improved or has benefitted from another season at Ft Meyers. IMO I think Gonsalves must have improved his pitching as I don't think you can post a 1.44 ERA and not have improved. I know the season is early, but I think Gonsalves needs to be promoted now as Milone is out the door and if the Twins are looking for a lefty in the rotation Gonsalves might actually be available as soon as next year (provided Gonsalves pitches at least "good" in Chattanooga this year).
