  1. First, he is far less valuable as a 1B/DH than he is a 3B. There is no question about that. It may not be the "end of the world," but he's certainly not the player he could be. And why are we excusing a player's conditioning like this? Why are you OK with him showing up to camp at 300 pounds? I just don't get that sentiment. I'm not saying Sano should be some skinny dude. But he definitely has to improve his conditioning and get in better shape. He has a lot of potential as a third baseman. Everybody should want him to realize that potential, and conditioning will get him there.
  2. Are you saying that weight and conditioning don't matter? And your proof is by comparing Sano's performance with that of one single major league catcher? Miguel Sano is a professional athlete with enormous potential. Conditioning may not matter as much in baseball as it does, say, basketball, but it's still very important. Improved conditioning reduces the chances of injury and it improves healing time and could lengthen his career. Improved conditioning will also make it more likely that Sano spends that career as a third baseman and not a DH. Miguel Sano the third baseman is a LOT more valuable than Miguel Sano the DH. Miguel Sano's conditioning is a very legitimate concern.
  3. I don't blame the Twins for Ohtani. Fact is, he didn't want to come here. I'm not sure the Twins could have changed his mind on that. BUT, I do blame them for Cole and for Darvish. The Twins definitely had the prospects to serve up for Cole. And they could have beaten the Cubs' offer for Darvish. They did neither. I was hopeful that this new front office would be more aggressive in a situation like this than their predecessors. Instead, we get the same old, overly conservative approach.
  4. Really good take. The other factor has been the success of teams like the Astros, who tore everything down for multiple years to collect assets and build for the future. The team rapidly improved once its better draft picks reached the majors, and won the World Series. Teams are getting smart about that. So fewer teams are trying to win, which is limiting the overall market. And teams like the Yankees and Dodgers are trying to control their spending to stay under the salary cap or because they spent too much in past years.
  5. If the Twins can't sign Darvish, I wouldn't mind a one-year deal with Arietta. Cobb and Lynn don't excite me all that much. But man, the Twins really need a better starter this year. Their window is open and they should take it.
  6. Yet another argument for the Twins to sign Yu Darvish. Suffice it to say, I agree fully with this piece.
  7. Probably not. But man the Darvish-to-Twins thing just won't go away. My hopes are not remotely up. But given the Vikings performance on Sunday it would be nice to get some news like that this week.
  8. I think Nos. 1 and 5 are the biggest. Sano is going to be out for at least the first month of the season. At least. I imagine he'll come back healthy and strong and hopefully has reformed. I don't think Santana matches what he did last year and that emphasizes the importance of signing another pitcher or making a trade. If the Twins aren't going to cough up the $$$ it would take to get Darvish, then maybe they should explore a Chris Archer trade.
  9. 1. Sign Darvish. 2. Trade for Chris Archer. 3. Sign Alex Cobb. Twins should do two of those three. They can afford it. We deserve it. As for the offseason so far, I'm fine with the Twins moving slow. Few free agents have signed contracts, and offseasons should be judged as a whole, not based on what they did through Dec. 27.
  10. This is a really good post - something nobody else in this market will do. So thank you.
  11. I don't think this is a bad idea. The Twins should look at all angles to improve their team, and that could include a Santana trade. Trades you don't have to make are the best types, because you can command higher prices. At the same time, having Santana as a No. 3 starter instead of a No. 1 starter is a much better rotation. But if the Twins enter 2018 with a better rotation, I'm all for it.
  12. Pretty sure that goes without saying.
  13. Imagine teams would look at his draft position and his overall talent and take a chance on him. Bummer. But I don't argue with the Twins' decision to not protect him.
  14. I think Molitor should win. I worry that he won't, and that it'll be Francona. But given Molitor's pitching staff -- he had to use 36 pitchers! -- and the team's improvement in the second half, he should win. Much easier to win games when you have a pitching staff like the one Cleveland uses. And a lineup like Houston's.
  15. After Phil Hughes and Glen Perkins I don't want to touch any pitcher with thoracic outlet syndrome. At best you could do a minor league deal. But what's happened to some of these guys has been scary.
  16. 1. Can't have too many pitchers. 2. I don't think Mejia is the lock you say he is. 3. If the Twins think he is a potential major league starter this year they can potentially trade Gibson this offseason. 4. Can't have too many pitchers. 5. Twins should still look to acquire another starter this offseason.
  17. I'm not sure the Twins were "stubborn," so much as they had a price in mind and they intended to get it and when they didn't get it they didn't make a trade. That's what good GMs do. There was no need to trade Dozier he is a good player. I was all on board for a Dozier trade, but I certainly didn't want the team to trade him only for a single pitcher. He was worth more than that. Hard to say the Dodgers made a mistake, given the season they had. But Dozier would look awfully good in that lineup. And it would be nice to have a couple of really good pitching prospects who could step in to the rotation next year (DeLeon is still a good prospect despite his 2017). But it was better that the Twins made the playoffs this year.
  18. Can't fully argue with it. I'd personally say Buxton is the MVP, simply because his defense almost single handedly turned the team from a bad defensive team into a good defensive team. Also, his hitting really came on this year. Mauer was also a stud this year on both sides of the ball, and his defense saved an awful lot of errors over there at first.
  19. I think he's a major league ballplayer and that major league ballplayers get injured from time to time. He didn't miss that much time this year. Be far more concerned about Miguel Sano.
  20. I'll say this: No matter what happens, this season should be considered a raging, shocking success. But it won't feel like it if they don't make the playoffs. I was probably as optimistic as anyone heading into the season, meaning I could easily envision a 10-15-win improvement. And yet here they are, awfully close to the second wild card spot. This season gives me a lot of hope heading into 2018 that the core can improve, and perhaps Sano can stay healthy for the full year, while perhaps the team does something to address its pitching staff and its bullpen. The Twins have the makings of a very good team if they can just do that. But not making the playoffs will feel like a disappointment.
  21. These struggles against the Yankees are getting OLD. Really old.
  22. Am I the only one who has watched video of that walk-off like 20 times?
  23. Rosario has helped fill the void left by Sano and last night was awesome. This team has some really good young talent that makes them fun to watch.
  24. That wouldn't be a surprise at all. And good for him, too. By all accounts a good kid. And a fun one to watch. Even when he was hitting like .170 I paid close attention to his at-bats to see if he'd do something exciting.
