  1. I'd be happy if the Twins signed Drew. I'd also be okay with them letting him go. He's getting older and his defense is declining. I don't like Florimon as the long term solution, but for the $, he provides value. Every team needs a solid #9 hitter. Florimon has that on lock-down. If the Twins sign Drew, I'm excited becasue they're going for it. It may not be the best way to spend the Pohlads money, but it's not my money, so spend away. Money might not buy World Series victories, but it sure does give you a push in the right direction.
  2. Boof Bonser, great name. Not a great career. To rephrase a song from popular culture "Pitchers, they come they go, rotation to bullpen, bullpen to hasbeen, yo" Boof Bonser, we hardly knew you.
  3. Something to note here sports fans. The Twins don't need to sign a veteran catcher to mentor Pinto. They have one of the greatest catchers of all time on the roster. Remember Joe Mauer? Hello! He moved to first base, he didn't stop being Joe Mauer. So let's put the whole "mentorship" role to bed, that's a non-issue, especially if Pinto starts the season in AAA (where I think he should). Also, spending money on a catcher does not equate to not spending money on starting pitching. I do not believe there is a 1-to-1 ratio. Let's save some money on catcher so we can spend more on SP. That's hogwash. The Twins have a lot of holes, and while I'd rather they spend money on a SS than a C, spending money to make the team better seems to be a good idea, regardless of position. Maybe you don't think the Twins should spend money this off-season on a catcher because you dont' think the team will be competetive (Thrylos), that's a different argument, one that makes more sense than this "dont spend money on C, we need SP" being thrown around. And I'm done.
  4. A well thought out and backed up article. My biggest argument against what you wrote would be the case you built for Rick Anderson. I agree we can't blame him for all of the pitching woes. You can only shine a turd so much. That being said, Gardy "picked" Rick Anderson to be his pitching coach back when both were still in their playing days. I think Gardy and Rick will be together forever, they're a pair. That also seems wrong to me. I can't point to any metrics to help support my thoughts, my views, but I don't think Rick Anderson is good at his job. I think it's wrong to credit him for Carl Pavano, he was a successful veteran pitcher long before he came to MN. Boof Bonser was never good, another guy who shouldn't be in the for Rick Anderson category. Carlos Silva was traded to the Twins where he spent the prime of his career, his decline after he left Minnesota could be a small push towards Anderson. I don't know enough to argue more, I'd have to do some more research, but when I think Rick Anderson, my mind shutters just a little. I am not a fan of his. I'd need to see some more numbers to convince me otherwise. Correia was better than expected, the Twins, as a whole, are not sabermetric adverse, and the Twins are an old boys network. I'm glad Bill Smith lost his job as GM, and I'm also glad the Twins retained his services within the organization. He's good at his job, he's not good as a GM.
  5. I agree with you 100%. People complaining about Mauer's lack of power and his big contract drive me crazy. Mauer had an OPS over .800 this season in a league where offense is down across the board. He is an elite player, arguably top-10 in the league and definitely top 15. His onbase skills are elite. All he does is NOT MAKE OUTS. And as far as his contract goes, it's a sunk cost. You can't evaluate him on his contract, he's going to get that money no matter where he plays. He'll take a WAR hit becuase of the position change, but he's also set to play 20+ more games than he would at catcher. There's definitely some added value there. And he profiles to be an excellent defender at first as well. The long and the short of it is the more Mauer can play, the better. It's disappointing that he had to move from behind the plate, but it doesn't change his value to this team. Mauer is elite anywhere on the diamond.
  6. Looking at the Revere trade, I still make that move. Revere would not have made the Twins considerably better this past season and prospects moving up the system would look to move him off the position sooner rather than later. However, Trevor May has a chance (most likely as a reliever) to add value to the Twins major league club at a time when they will be competetive. Trade value now for value down the line, when the club will need it. As for the Vanimal... well, let's just hope that he was dealing with some injuries last season and that the Twins can salvage something from him this season and into the future. With a nick name like Vanimal, there has to be something there. Maybe they can move him to the pen where he can become something of a Wild Thing, ala Rick Vaughn (okay, so maybe not, but it's a fun idea). The Span trade is a little more straight forward. Alex Meyer has a chance to be a front of the rotation player. Denard Span will continue to get older and his skill will diminish. Again, trade value now for value later. A year removed, I like both trades. I like them even more now than I did before.
  7. I like the Twins going out to sign a veteran catcher on a 1-year deal. AJ Pierzynski makes sense to me because he also adds some attitude and outspoken veteran leadership that I beliee this team lacks. I keep seeing people talking about not spending money on a catcher and instead putting that money towards starting pitching. I don't think it works that way. Saving money by not signing a catcher to a 1-year deal will not equate to dollars spent signing quality starting pitching. TR can go out and get both, and I for one, hope he does.
  8. Do you think the Twins should go out and sign a guy like Pierzynski to bring some fire and leadership to the clubhouse? Do you think some of the young guys who are starting to find their way, maybe Dozier, need to step up and fill that void?
  9. I'd sign Kazmir for an annual average value of $10mil or less, maybe even look at adding a 3rd-year team option. The Twins need more guys in the rotation that can miss bats. Kevin Correia looks great in a rotation when he is a 4 or 5, but certainly leaves a lot to be desired when he's your #1.
  10. Good stuff here, puts my mind a bit at ease to see some stats in black and white.
  11. How does the move effect Mauer's annual all-star status and his eventual HOF status? I think both take a serious hit with the move to first. I still see him as HOFer, but his all-star status, at least his chance to start regularly is definitely in jeopardy.
  12. I had the destinct pleasure to spend a few moments interviewing both Cory Provus and twins double-A SS AJ Pettersen for yesterday's. Talk to Contact podcast. (http://talk2contact.podomatic.com/entry/2013-11-11T16_19_20-08_00) where Cody Christie and I also discussed the Mauer move at length. In the Provus interview I asked about leadership on the team and if Joe Mauer needs to step up and be a more vocal leader. Who is the dugout leader of this team? Is there someone in house who gets the guys fired up and keeps morale high? Dozier? Perkins?
  13. Things have changed a bit since this post went up. With Mauer at first I think the Twins need to signs veteran catcher to provide depth so Pinto can work on his game behind the dish. I think Florimon can stay at SS for now and maybe he gets a little better with the bat. Stephen Drew is the only real FA option at SS this offseason and I'm not sure it would be wise or cost effective to sign him. It sounds like Plouffe will have the chance to hold onto third base until Sano arrives and that's probably for the best. Hammer/Doumit can share regular DH duties.

  16. I like the idea of adding Morse; I agree that a RH bat fits better, and if the Twins are off to spend money, choosing Morse could be a good choice. I also agree that Morales is not the right fit; as soon as Seattle offered him a QA his value took a hit, the Twins should not waste the draftpick on Morales. If they move Mauer off the dish they need to sign a veteran catcher, I totally agree. What I don't agree with is moving Mauer from behind the plate. I think the right move is to have Mauer start the season at catcher unless he's physically unable to perform those duties. Hell, a guy like Henry Blanco might be around (even after the start of the season) if Mauer needs to get moved off the position and an emergency catcher is needed. Danny Santana is not the long term option at SS. I think the Twins will need to look to trades or FA to find someone to play SS if Florimon is not the answer. Maybe we could see the Twins sign a couple dozen minor league players to find someone who might fit. Who knows. Maybe we get a marginal SS prospect in a deadline deal in 2014. But I don't think the organization can count on Santana as the heir apparent.
  17. over at http://www.talktocontact.com/2013/11/episode-58-brandon-warne-and-infield.html you can find the latest episode of the Talk to Contact podcast where we are joined by 1500 ESPN Twins beat reporter Brandon Warne and discuss Infield and DH Free agent options available for the Twins this off-season. Do you see any options that make sense for the Twins to bring in to man a spot in the infield? I like Corey Hart at 1B/DH, and he'd also give the lineup some flexibility at a corner OF spot.

  20. Cory Provus has been nice enough to agree to come onto the Talk to Contact Podcast to talk Twins baseball. If you have any questions for the radio voice of the Twins, please don't hesitate to send them my way and I'll try to get them into the interview. -Paul
  21. Joe Mauer to pitch AND catch in 2014. Will also DH for himself. It's the only way to get his bat in the lineup twice.
  22. Also, any talk of moving Dozier back to SS is pure garbage. Hog wash. Get away from that.
  23. Kubel has a good looking beard, but the Twins have plenty of OF depth, especially at the corner positions. Bringing Koobs back doesn't make sense. I like him to have a comeback season, but it's not going to happen in Minnesota.
  24. Also, throw hard, miss bats, to some extent.
  25. Bring on the shortcuts! The truth is that the Twins have not been terrible at drafting/finding pitching, they just haven't held onto the guys they've had because of the benjamins. They traded Garza away for DeLOLmon Young, Johan was sent packing for a pile of crap, Kyle Lohse, Liriano to name a few. Obviously the Twins could not have, or at least would not have been able to afford to hold onto all of those players, but maybe that's a big part of the problem, the unwillingness of the team to spend in the Dome days. The success of some of these guys after leaving the organization, in my opinion, places some blame squarely in the lap of Rick Anderson. The Twins need to spend to bring in some mid-front end rotation guys to get the team back on track.
