The White Sox must really encourage this. In '77 I was in Chicago for a July 4 weekend series with the Twins. I went to two games and I listened to two on the radio. To this day, I have never heard so much homerism, jingoism and mockery of the other team as I did that weekend. It was a truly miserable weekend as the Sox swept four.

It is a close call either way and both have had amazing seasons. The next week may still make a difference. Trout is a Phenom, to use a bit of Stengelese, and Cabrera is a monster. There is no MVP stat and there isn't really any particular criteria. Just 28 guys all using their own biases to identify and evaluate candidates. Some voters are surely dolts and some may be geniuses. Best player? How do you evaluate that? Most valuable? Can we even define it? If I were voting today it would be Cabrera. But I acknowledge I'm probably closer to dolt than genius. I've also been brainwashed from an early age to look at BA, HR and RBI. No amount of re-programming can reverse that totally.

Thanks for posting this. Though I have seen this referenced occasionally I've never delved into it. Doumit is most surprising to me (aside from Thomas which is SSS). Not that he is negative but that he is worse than Span, Revere and Carroll. I would have expected him to be in that group. Clearly this is a function of opportunity so a rate might be in order. I had tried that earlier but I skipped one part in that tutorial: I never set "Accept third-party cookies." So I tried it this time and that did the trick. Then, once that worked, I turned third-party cookies off again, deleted all cookies, cleared cache, restarted FF, logged into TD, clicked the "offending" hyperlinks and I was still logged in. So, my take on what happened is TD has a third-party cookie that needs to be set. Once the cookie is in place, login persistence is maintained when the hyperlinks are clicked. I have FF set to "Opt Out" of tracking so when the third party cookie was set, it was set to opt out. Opt out cookies do not delete. So, even though I deleted cookies and turned off third-party cookies, the cookie is still set and the hyperlink click maintains the login credential. Thanks for your efforts.

I did a little testing. I went through all posts of "articles". I have listed the results below. It looks to me like posts by yourself, John Bonnes and Parker Hageman result in my still being logged in. Posts by Seth Stohs, Cody Christie and Nick Nelson result in my not being logged in. Who gets Beloit then?

OK, I just went through the same process with John Bonnes' post Does A Deal With Scott Baker Make Sense? and, when I was redirected, I was logged in. I went back and tried it with Seth's article and I was not logged in.

I am using FF too. I cleared history and cookies, closed and re-opened FF. I logged in to TD. I went to the Twins Talk forum, viewed Seth's post of his article The Final Fifteen; What to Watch For, clicked the link to his article and the same thing happened. I was redirected to his article but I was not logged in on that page.

Wow. Heads up all around... except for Avila. How did he manage not to touch the base?

When I am in the forum and logged in, if, from a forum post, I click a link to an article on the home page, I will not be logged in there. Then, if I try to navigate back to the forum, from the front page, I will no longer be logged in there. On the other hand, if I go to the home page directly by typing twinsdaily.com into the address bar, I will be logged in again, even after having just been there not logged in. The same thing happens if I go back to the forum by typing the address... I am already logged in. I have experienced this several times. Does anyone else have this problem?

I just posted a chart. I created it in OpenOffice Calc (free Excel alternative), did a screen print, cropped out everything but the chart, saved it as an image, uploaded the image to the post. Is there an easier way?

The first thing I noticed when I did the update was that he only walked 7 times in the last split. Combining that with the start of the season split, Pujols walked 14 times in 316 PA or a 4.4% rate. Ben Revere has walked at a 4.8% rate. For the record, Revere walked 9 times during the time period of the last split. Pujols did have a better than 1:1 ratio during the 62 game stretch in the middle though.

OK, I am officially no longer in favor of platooning Morneau with Valencia.

It is really two questions. I haven't checked out. I watch nearly every game (recorded with a thirty-second skip button. I probably wouldn't otherwise). I check in here most days (sometimes many times in a day). However, I stopped caring about wins and losses early in the first week of the season. Defense mechanism.

George Brett, Wade Boggs and Mike Schmidt were all pretty poor fielding third basemen in the beginning of their careers. All three became gold glove winners, Schmidt quickly and often... Boggs and Brett later in their careers. Of course, they only got the chance to improve because they hit the hell out of the ball. So Plouffe should emulate that.

It is not at all surprising that players straddling the line of greatness and very-goodness hover at or below the line of admittance. Especially those that peak at greatness but are quite middling for too long at other points in their careers. Some, possibly deserving, being overlooked and some, possibly not deserving, being elected. However, it is amazing that certain players are not voted for at all by people who, one would think, should know better. Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Henry Aaron, Steve Carlton, Johnny Bench, George Brett, Cal Ripken. There were voters, members of the Baseball Writers Association of America for at least ten years at the time they voted, that did not vote for each of those guys, as well as EVERY other player in history. How does that happen? How does someone write about baseball for over ten years and not recognize when a player is elite, even when comparing them to the best of all time? I hereby predict someone will not vote for Greg Maddux and Derek Jeter when their times come.

Right. I can't help giving him extra credit for that. I'd bet he doesn't give a rat's rear that he isn't in the HOF either. I would give him extra credit for that too.

Tony is not a slam dunk and the reason is longevity. But, as you imply, there are a lot of players in the HOF who are not slam dunks. Most of them, in fact. If I were to go through them, I would expect maybe 50 or 60 out of about 300 that are slam dunks. Even among those there will be dissenters. Six guys didn't vote for Ty Cobb and I think fifteen or so did not vote for Babe Ruth. Joe DiMaggio didn't make it until his third try. But that leaves about 75% of them that are marginal. You mention Dick Allen. Ignoring Joe Jackson and Pete Rose, I think that Dick Allen is the single most deserving player not in the HOF. I think Tony Oliva is right behind him. I think they are both discounted due to their eras. That is unfortunate.
