  1. I wasn't really aware that the Tigers has a farm system to dismantle anymore.
  2. I don't think it'll be a great return, but I think it will surprise a few people. He's having a good year and there isn't a whole lot of LHR's available and a lot of contenders need a LHR.
  3. I don't think Duensing is traded until after Miller is traded. After he's gone, I'm thinking TR will get some calls. He may have already received some from teams just to get things in place so they can pull the trigger after Miller is off the table.
  4. I'm guessing Alex Rios. If you were looking for the next Twins player to be traded... I have no idea.
  5. Agreed, This has already been a fun day. I hope the excitement continues all day.
  6. Suzuki may not get traded today. It sounds like they started talking about an extension again today. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/twins-suzuki-again-discussing-extension.html
  7. Apparently, Cespedes's contract calls for him to be non-tendered after the deal is done, so no qualifying offer for him, and therefore, no 1st round draft pick for Boston. https://twitter.com/DCameronFG/status/494861101113155584 Still an interesting move for both sides, and I actually like it for both teams.
  8. That's one way to look at it, I guess. Well, that over/under of 10.5 might not be too far off. Already two trades today and we still have hours to go.
  9. It's always a great feeling to trade a guy you picked up off of waivers back to the team that you claimed him from.
  10. The Twins just acquired Tommy Milone!?!?! Interesting. Nothing listed on what we gave up. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/twins-acquire-tommy-milone.html ...and scooped by Winston.
  11. Posted something about the Tommy Milone trade. Wrong thread... whoops. I would have to think that he will be taking the Pino/Darnell spot?
  12. I'm pretty sure that I know who the player is, but I won't name him so others can judge this scenario on the numbers. Judging from the numbers alone, it looks like Prospect "A" could be very good. Obviously there is caution because he's only been in A- ball, and I don't know if comparing him directly to Braun is a good idea, but I think overall you are correct. We might just have another possible star. Let's hope he can make the the proper adjustments and bump up that OBP.
  13. This might also signal to Plouffe as well that his days may be numbered. He has to be aware that we've got quite the 3B prospect in Sano making his way up the system. What position will Plouffe end up at now? The Twins are definitely not handing the spot over to Plouffe now that Mauer is there, and the outfield looks to be filling up with Willingham, Arcia, Hicks, Presley, and eventually Buxton. Maybe he ends up at DH?
  14. Doumit it definitely the metal head. His walk up music is "Mother". A little tame by some metal standards, but still a classic. Fun post though.

    Better than the Numbers

I agree with you completely on this. I think the advanced stats that have been introduced with sabermetrics do a better job of trying to isolate individual performance than traditional stats, but like you said, it doesn't tell the whole story. I don't think that we should stop trying to find these new stats just because we haven't found the perfect one yet. Maybe we never will, but that doesn't mean we can't keep trying. Until then though, there will definitely be people that are "better than the numbers."

    Better than the Numbers

I usually think of "better than their numbers" really applies to traditional statistics. No statistic has everything that can really everything about a player though. Some of the traditional statistics are really skewed because they're dependent on the other players. I don't know how much you're into sabermetrics, but if you haven't really had a chance to get that deep into them, Baseball Prospectus compiled a book of articles that really does a pretty good job explaining some of the stats. It uses really good examples to explain different stats, but it also makes you think about everything that different stats are trying to explain. The book is called "Baseball Between the Numbers". Even if you don't trust Sabermetrics all that much, you can at least understand what they're trying to achieve with some of the stats they talk about. 17. Vargas was suspended 50 games for violating the MiLB drug policy after testing positive for phentermine, which can be used to help with weight loss. He missed the final 18 games of 2011 and the suspension carried over into 2012. That's why his "games played" stat looks low.
  18. I think this was a very good assessment. I think you're probably right about all of this. I'm hoping that the Twins will go against their old ways and sign some decent starting pitching, but it is really hard to believe that they will actually do this. Good post.
  19. Kenny Williams.... ...wait.... no, not him.
  20. I really like this idea as a way to compare darftees. Everyone's prospect lists usually end up pretty similar, so it's nice to see the names by production as well. Please keep this going.
  21. Nicely put. I would disagree with a few points. I don't think that because we didn't trade Kubel, Cuddy or Joe Nathan last year doesn't mean we won't make moves this year. Those were Bill Smith decisions, not Terry Ryan decisions. I think Smith must have taken enough criticism from the media for the Capps/Ramos trade the year before that it made him unwilling to do anything. At the same time, the Twins were on a winning streak before the deadline and he probably honestly thought that the team was back in contention. He was definitely wrong. But losing those three guys did strengthen the organization through extra draft picks. These are probably all points of a 1%'er though. I think my long rant provided more proof of the type of people that read and post on this site.
  22. It sounds like Appel is looking for cash, and Gausman wants to leave his mark on his college. I guess I can't blame Gausman for that part. You forgot to mention that even with the 6th worst record, the Twins would be picking 7th in draft as Baltimore would get a compensation pick immediately after the pick they lost (I assume that is still the case in the top 10 picks, but they are protected, so I'm not really sure how that works). Next year's draft class is supposed to be much deeper, so even if the Twins don't end up with either of these guys, they very well could end up with someone of a similar caliber. But who knows, they could both go back to college and wear down their arms so much that they end up being useless.
  23. He would say that or "heck". Good post Bark.
  24. Well said. I do enjoy the stats, but I'm a science type and that's part of the way my brain works. But, the numbers don't mean anything at all without the emotion that the game of baseball inspires. Thanks for the post.
  25. Good post. He definitely would be an unconventional ace. You're right, this would be a lot to ask of him, but I can hope he keeps this up.
