  1. When it was first reported, the other team wasn't listed. It now looks like he was acquired by the Nationals.
  2. No. I wouldn't give him a 3rd year unless it was a team option.
  3. The Braves are also out on Andrew Miller. Maybe they have TR on the phone talking about Duensing right now? I know, not the same level of pitcher, but Atlanta needs a LHR and are probably looking for a cheaper option.
  4. And Asdrubal Cabrera is apparently gone...
  5. Yeah, but this deadline has been very active and fun. The August trade deadline is usually a little more low key.
  6. I agree, it probably would be an overpay. But, the Twins are probably not going to be spending much money elsewhere during that time, so is there any problem with overpaying a bit?
  7. I'm pretty sure that most teams put most of their players on trade waivers every August. Most of good players probably get claimed and pulled off of waivers again and no one ever hears about it. There's no penalty for putting a guy like Nolasco on trade waivers. Maybe someone offers you something great, but not very likely. If a team makes a claim and they aren't serious, you pull them back off of waivers and nothing happens. No big deal.
  8. I need to learn how to read. For some reason I thought it said "getting close". Damn this Lysdexia.
  9. And it sounds like the Cards have acquired Lackey. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/cardinals-acquire-john-lackey.html
  10. I wasn't really aware that the Tigers has a farm system to dismantle anymore.
  11. I don't think it'll be a great return, but I think it will surprise a few people. He's having a good year and there isn't a whole lot of LHR's available and a lot of contenders need a LHR.
  12. I don't think Duensing is traded until after Miller is traded. After he's gone, I'm thinking TR will get some calls. He may have already received some from teams just to get things in place so they can pull the trigger after Miller is off the table.
  13. I'm guessing Alex Rios. If you were looking for the next Twins player to be traded... I have no idea.
  14. Agreed, This has already been a fun day. I hope the excitement continues all day.
  15. Suzuki may not get traded today. It sounds like they started talking about an extension again today. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/twins-suzuki-again-discussing-extension.html
  16. Apparently, Cespedes's contract calls for him to be non-tendered after the deal is done, so no qualifying offer for him, and therefore, no 1st round draft pick for Boston. https://twitter.com/DCameronFG/status/494861101113155584 Still an interesting move for both sides, and I actually like it for both teams.
  17. That's one way to look at it, I guess. Well, that over/under of 10.5 might not be too far off. Already two trades today and we still have hours to go.
  18. It's always a great feeling to trade a guy you picked up off of waivers back to the team that you claimed him from.
  19. The Twins just acquired Tommy Milone!?!?! Interesting. Nothing listed on what we gave up. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/twins-acquire-tommy-milone.html ...and scooped by Winston.
  20. Posted something about the Tommy Milone trade. Wrong thread... whoops. I would have to think that he will be taking the Pino/Darnell spot?
  21. I'm pretty sure that I know who the player is, but I won't name him so others can judge this scenario on the numbers. Judging from the numbers alone, it looks like Prospect "A" could be very good. Obviously there is caution because he's only been in A- ball, and I don't know if comparing him directly to Braun is a good idea, but I think overall you are correct. We might just have another possible star. Let's hope he can make the the proper adjustments and bump up that OBP.
  22. This might also signal to Plouffe as well that his days may be numbered. He has to be aware that we've got quite the 3B prospect in Sano making his way up the system. What position will Plouffe end up at now? The Twins are definitely not handing the spot over to Plouffe now that Mauer is there, and the outfield looks to be filling up with Willingham, Arcia, Hicks, Presley, and eventually Buxton. Maybe he ends up at DH?
  23. Doumit it definitely the metal head. His walk up music is "Mother". A little tame by some metal standards, but still a classic. Fun post though.

    Better than the Numbers

I agree with you completely on this. I think the advanced stats that have been introduced with sabermetrics do a better job of trying to isolate individual performance than traditional stats, but like you said, it doesn't tell the whole story. I don't think that we should stop trying to find these new stats just because we haven't found the perfect one yet. Maybe we never will, but that doesn't mean we can't keep trying. Until then though, there will definitely be people that are "better than the numbers."

    Better than the Numbers

I usually think of "better than their numbers" really applies to traditional statistics. No statistic has everything that can really everything about a player though. Some of the traditional statistics are really skewed because they're dependent on the other players. I don't know how much you're into sabermetrics, but if you haven't really had a chance to get that deep into them, Baseball Prospectus compiled a book of articles that really does a pretty good job explaining some of the stats. It uses really good examples to explain different stats, but it also makes you think about everything that different stats are trying to explain. The book is called "Baseball Between the Numbers". Even if you don't trust Sabermetrics all that much, you can at least understand what they're trying to achieve with some of the stats they talk about.
