The difference is, the 90s teams were devoid of talent. Yes, there is only so much any manager can do when there is no talent. But TK probably did a service by managing that bunch. I would certainly think there is more talent here now than there was then. Rocco is now on year 6 and the high water mark was a wild card win. On teams that had plenty of talent. I think most people would agree he’s been given a fair shot, no? Makes sense to make a move while there is still a window open.

This is an odd way of thinking. You don’t see anyone who might make some better decisions or keep the team from collapsing so we should just stand pat. With what’s not working. I’d have to think, in the entirety of the baseball world, there could possibly be someone whose managing could win a few more ballgames. Not really a silver bullet thing, more of a “maybe we can do better” thing. Quite frankly, the way that 2 of the past 3 seasons ended is more than enough reason to try someone else.

You say that he does have some level of autonomy to make decisions. He has responsibility for some of the results because he makes some of those decisions. You also say that baseball managers matter “less than” we think they do. So what’s the harm in changing leadership? It couldn’t get much worse if managers don’t earn as many W’s as players (as you say). But what if it got better? The AL wild card was determined by one game. The NL WC ended in a tiebreaker. Half the divisions were settled by 4 games or less. Margins are small. Is a better manager worth a few more wins? Can’t we at least try?

Yeah I think I grew to hate Seattle when the Vikings were sent there every year for a scheduled butt kicking. Then of course the playoff FG miss. But Detroit is going to be a problem.

I’m going to guess that the vast majority of sports organizations have collaboration between front offices and coaching staffs. That’s how coaches get hired in the first place. Nobody interviews with a plan different from the desires of management and is offered the job. The twins are not unique in this regard. Every team has a plan and all mlb teams rely on analytics. Coaches also get fired all the time for all sorts of reasons. Are the ones getting fired the ones who strayed too far from the collaboration/plan Or, is it at all possible that many times, coaches get fired because they aren’t getting results? This whole argument is just a disconnect between people who think managers matter little and those who think they matter a good deal. But if you think they matter “a lot less”, then what’s the harm of trying something else? It couldn’t get much worse than it is now, if that’s what you believe. But maybe it could get a little better, no? And yes I know it’s been decided already.

There have certainly been posts saying as much. “Moves are determined before games between the FO and coaching staff”. “He’s just doing what the FO has predetermined they want”. “Any new manager will simply follow what the FO wants” Are you suggesting nobody has said that? The post above me says exactly that. A lot of people seem to just sort of believe that the manager has been given no leeway to make in-game decisions. Has that ever been proven or are people just assuming? I’ll ask about the loss in Kansas City late in the season in particular because it was so impactful. Analytically, it really never made sense to pitch your closer in the 7th inning when his numbers outside of save situations were awful. So did Rocco brazenly go against the numbers or is he allowed to when he feels like it? Does anyone know?

You are correct. I was just pointing out that the NFL is so copycat that you’d hope it wasn’t a “they figured out how to score on our defense” thing. Love had nearly 400 yards passing and after it looked like he could get pulled in the first half

Problem is that some posters have already decided that managers matter very little. Yet, so far the only evidence supporting that claim is that they are paid less than players, even though it’s an apples to oranges comparison. Supply and demand, less people can play centerfield at the major league level than can manage. Players earn money for their teams. Of the teams with the top ten highest payrolls, 9 of them were in the top 10 for attendance. Not all even made the playoffs. Players careers are shorter than managers. Also, how do we know that the manager has no freedom to make decisions? How could every decision be made in a pregame meeting? There are too many variables. The way that one Kansas City game was handled was a 2 game swing. Pulled the starter and put in the closer in a situation he constantly performed poorly in. whats the harm in trying someone else? If they don’t really matter anyway?

2001 was one of the best years ever. It was the first time I was old enough to even see a winning record after all those terrible 90’s teams I forgot they finished 14 back in 2022 😂 21-30 to finish the year. Still not as bad as this season -
Not nearly the only problem. But even going with the premise that managers don’t win or lose many games….the twins missed the playoffs by 4 games and were within a game or two right up through the last week. Did our manager’s decision making lose 4 more games than it won? Right now without even looking it up, I can think of at least 3 games in the last month or so where his late game decisions cost a ballgame. We’re talking about thin margins here. I will never believe that managers don’t win or lose games for their teams.

Oh and by the way, I did respond to ashbury. Players get paid more than managers, not because managers aren’t valuable, but because stars make money for their teams. Nobody buys a ticket to watch the manager. He never responded so did he move the goal posts? Can you offer a rebuttal?

Just in the last week, on the main forum page, there are a couple threads on ownership, one on a lack of moves at the deadline, a thread each about Lee and Lewis, one about former twins, even one about Kepler. You’re posting on many of them. And yes, there are more than a couple on Rocco. I’m just not seeing how this topic in particular draws such a response from some. Topics aren’t going uncovered because people are talking about the manager too much. And besides this is a thread about the manager, you can’t be miffed that people are talking about it here or at this time. And by the way, everyone’s opinions are valid here. Or at least they should be. One doesn’t have more credibility to post something because they aren’t a negative unhappy fan. Having a positive, calm demeanor does not make one’s opinion more valid or correct. This isn’t directed at you but I see this written from time to time and it bugs me. Little too much gatekeeping goes on here sometimes.

Let me ask, what content that you’d like to see is not being covered or lost here because everyone is posting about the manager? It’s odd to me that people who don’t want to hear about Rocco as much would post in a thread about…:Rocco?
