  1. like to think we are arguing two different things, two different Colabellos. Agreed he is a journeyman if his avg and production tail off to a basic 270 hitter with 270 journeyman production. Or if he does turn out to be a Roy Hobbs type, and plays the rest of the year at or near the top of the batting race and with the stunning slugging and OPS he currently has, I don't think you mind having him batting before Vargus or Arcia. Besides he isn't the only player that blocks powerful youth. For instance there is a different guy who is 6'5" 230 pounds that hits a lot of pretty singles but is absent deep production camped out at first base.
  2. . You may regret this post if he does more game winning damage to the twins the next two days. As you indicate, as a healthy player he has a very healthy OPS , and the two points in time combined are a 355 avg, and a 25 Hr 120 RBI full season pace. Now where exactly would that not fit on the Twins roster, much less anyone's roster?
  3. No question he is a free swinger. But BABIP will be an interesting watch. His norm of 310 includes 2/3 of his games last year that he hid injury. It might be more interesting to look at/ compare his stats this year vs April 1-23 last year and see how similar they might be. His spray chart is up the middle or weak side dominant and suggests to me that even as a free swinger pitchers have not found a serious hole in his swing other then pitching him out of the zone.
  4. 2 for 4 today with a walk, guy is a hitting machine. For the weekend 6 hits, 2 HRS three extra base hits, on base 8 of 13 times in 19 games 8 have been multi hit games. So who would be better at first base on the Minnesota Twins? And cost a bit(big) less?
  5. Look what he is doing now! MVPStats
  6. So am I the only person who has noticed which former Twin now on Toronto is literally destroying the cover on the baseball? Hobbs has got to be player of the month even with only 18 games. Let's see, only 2 HR the last two games, 25 hits, probably 1/2 the 18 games multiple hit games, 24 hits avg 379 OBP438 sluggin591 OPS 1.029
  7. And not withstanding his salary, let's just say he is just gone tomorrow. Now you have first base open to potentially Vargas and Sano trading first and DH. I think those two would have more offensive potential, perhaps far more together then Mauer. Probably we would see 20 plus HR and perhaps a lot more along with the same amount of doubles Joe would hit,, less singles but more total RBIs. And the youngsters would develop.
  8. Like your logic but even if the Twins are underspending wouldn't they think even if we are cheap we can stay cheap and acquire some more power with Mauer's payroll curtailed or eliminated? Y
  9. So many here defend him and on the basis of being a pure hitter, I agree there is nobody that hits a prettier single up the middle then Joe Mauer. But for 23 million, 130 singles and 4 HRs? That price paid is hurting the Twins, they could use that money for other players, the stat line reinforces the argument to trade him even if you have to pay some of the salary to the acquiring team. Some day 23 million routinely gets paid for a Mauer to hit 130 singles and 4 HRs, or for Carew or Gywnn to do it but not today, and not for some years.
  10. strongly disagree that what he did in 09 didn't play into his contract. He was younger, his body was still developing, and seeing 28 HR from a guy developing into a 235 pound 6 foot 5 inch (remember he was still growing taller just the year past) individual would have any team salivating.
  11. He is a good athlete and pure hitter and first baseman. The issue is that typically teams 'hide' power at first base, not 4 homerun per year hitters. And no one else pays a non power guy 23 mil for 4 HRs and 130 singles. The Twins need to get him traded to Boston or New York but will have to throw in paying 1/2 his salary to get it done.
  12. we will see the old Joe Mauer, the 2009 version when he reaches his contract year in 2018.
  13. . When does he have the conversation with the guy making 23 mil that hits 135 singles and four home runs each year?
  14. Mauer is not serious about home runs except in the one contract year that he needed to be serious. I only hope Molitor puts him in his place, Gardenheier couldn't
  15. Mauer 4 HR in 120 games and nobody is critical of a 6'5 235 lb first baseman that will not swing an uppercut bat? Nobody who cares about home runs would want Mauer around if given a choice. But who would want him anyway at 24 mil for 125-140 singles?
  16. I prefer to think of Cola as Roy Hobbs. Hobbs had a tremendous April! Until the last week of April. I never realized he was injured until after the season was over. I am a die hard Twins fan and have been for many decades. Living outside Minnesota, I visited Target Stadium the first time July 3rd and didn't know Hobbs was even called up. Then he hits his homerun in his first at bat. It seemed fate was giving him his chance again. Whether he ever hits 25 or 30 HRs in a year may be irrelevant if he can stay healthy and pound the ball out to the wall for doubles, triples and RBIs. If he goes the full year healthy his stats will help the Twins regret losing him. To think a team that lost 90 plus games has no room for him on their 40 man roster smacks of hollow unearned arrogance and is a big disconnect to me.
