  1. At first I was going to decry "nepotism!" in your choice of #1, because you have always had a soft spot for Lee. I was really surprised at how great his August was! I guess I pronounced judgement a little too early and stopped watching for development. Like SD's article on Sean Miller the other day, I am happy that TD doesn't let these performances don't slip through the cracks. Thanks for all your hard work.
  2. So the only acceptable way for Walker to have a 'non-discouraging' year is to completely correct his one major flaw? A flaw which, if corrected, would make him a top-10 prospect in all of baseball? Wow, tough crowd! What would be your scathing review of the plethora of mediocre years for the relief corps, or pretty much anyone not named Berrios or Kepler? How would you describe Buxton's year?
  3. I am happy for Hildenberger as well. Not that all our gnashing of teeth wasn't well deserved, but it is nice to see his excellent season rewarded excellently. I wonder if the goal of the AFL isn't to see how his stuff stacks up against AA-like competition with an eye for starting him there next April (ala Reed this year).
  4. <with tongue firmly in cheek> Instead of having the concussed Pinto be our emergency third catcher, why don't we have the concussed Mauer instead? Sano needs time at third, and Plouffe is doing well at 1st! Imagine this lineup: Hicks Dozier Mauer Sano Vargas Plouffe Rosario Escobar Buxton Maybe we could bench Suzuki and just play Joe full-time at catcher! I agree with sc in that I would like a third catcher that actually gets some regular use (i.e. when the C spot is pinch-hit for). Minor detail, but I would imagine that the third catcher will also be needed to catch bullpen sessions for the extra pitchers the team will carry in September. If you really don't want Pinto catching the rest of the year, you might also not want him catching BP.
  5. I really appreciate how much work you put into your posts, and the background research you do before you post. In thinking about Finnegan, I was wondering if he is an example of what you hope Berrios will bring to the Twins pennant drive (especially if you would plan on shutting him down for the playoffs)? In scouting the box scores, it doesn't look like Finnegan had much of an impact on the KC stretch run at all (nor does it look like he was given many opportunities): http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=finnebr01&t=p&year=2014 He appeared in 7 games, accumulating 7 innings. He didn't appear in back-to-back games, and had only one hold in the two opportunities he was given (got a BS/L on the other). Don't get me wrong, I think he did well, but he doesn't appear to have been a difference maker. I think Finnegan would be an excellent example for 'let's get Berrios up so he can get some experience', but not as good for demonstrating that 'young pitchers can make quite a difference'. And, just on principle, I don't think it is fair to compare our 6-foot nothing 21 year old with David Price, a 23 year old, Howser-winning, first overall draft pick who signed an MLB contract (i.e. he was already in his second year on the 40-man roster)!
  6. I keep going back-and-forth on this... It was pretty obvious that Berrios was tiring last year, his Strike % and #P/In were way down and up, respectively (i.e. he only pitched 24 innings in his last 5 starts). That is not the case so far this year, with his S% remaining at ~65% and #P/In at <15. I don't think the Twins would let him have 5 more starts, though. Especially since it would be significantly more if the Twins went deep in the playoffs since I don't think you could take him out at the divisional round of the playoffs if, as we all hope, he is the best starter we have. No matter how it doesn't fit into our analysis paradigms, I think the payers would revolt if you did that. As an aside, remember that he did pitch out of the bullpen for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.
  7. I think he would need to be on the 40-man roster to be eligible for the post-season, though. Is it wrong to hope that Rochester gets eliminated from playoff contention sooner rather than later?
  8. One last thought... Are you sure he is 'broken'? His high-A numbers from 2015 are very similar to those from 2014 (especially if you would grant me the luxury of ignoring last nights FUBAR). YEAR TEAMLGLEVE W L ERA G CG SV IP H R ER BB SO AVG WHIP GO/AO 2014 FTM FSL A(Adv) 2 0 0.00 7 0 0 0 1 1 7.1 5 0 0 0 1 2 0 12 .208 0.95 1.00 2015 FTM FSL A(Adv) 2 2 2.65 11 0 0 0 2 4 17.0 12 7 5 1 0 3 0 24 .207 0.88 0.56
  9. In a weird way, I think Burdi is similar to ABWII (... you know, we can't go a week without this discussion)! To me, the overall goal is to develop an MLB player, not to have success in the minors. The flaw with ABWII (i.e. strike zone judgement) is the same for Burdi. If you don't consistently throw strikes, it is very unlikely that you will have success in MLB. If this was not possible with Burdi's 'unorthodoxed and out of control' delivery, why not make the change right away? It would be great to know Burdi's 'out of zone' swing % in college was so that we could get a true representation of his ability to throw strikes; but I couldn't find anything.
  10. What happened to the 'high leverage' mantra used for why your best pitcher shouldn't just pitch the 9th (not that you, personally, have said that)? I would also posit that, if a reliever is needed for 3-4 innings, the game is probably already lost. Why would you waste a valuable arm like May on 'lost' games just to have him stretched out in case someone got hurt? And in truth, how many games (and with what regularity) does a winning ball club face such situations. Now, one comeback would be that it seems that they did exactly that with Anthony Swarzak, but I would suggest that Trevor May>>>>>>Anthony Swarzak.
  11. ... are you sure that the Yankees haven't considered this? Severino will be starting AT HOME vs Boston, who is the only team close to the Twins on the 'pathetic meter' for offense away from home (OPS of .663 vs. .621). I think a major league front office, when considering promotions, is more than capable of considering all the crap we can come up with, and double it with their own intricate analysis (Sabermetric or otherwise).
  12. I think they just wouldn't want Berrios to have to pitch on 8 days rest... both because of the rust and the extra mental ruminations. While I wouldn't think it would be the main reason, they also might not want their 21 yr. old flyball pitcher to debut on the road against the AL's best HOME offense (also second in HR)!
  13. I think the reason May couldn't be a 3-4 inning guy is that our bullpen is that bad! Like you were saying, we are/were in the playoff hunt! May's current 'value' in the bullpen is shown by the fact that on Sunday (when we were certainly still in it) Molitor had May pitch the inning after Perkins had blown the save. This was the first time all year that he has thrown May out there on back-to-back nights, and now he does it in the most dire situation you can have (on August 2, anyway). I think if they would have let May pitch today in a bullpen game (as Seth rightly calls it), they would have also had to play Sunday down a man in the pen. Without knowing what to expect from the newly arrived Jepson, that seems like it would really hamstring you. (Now, as it turns out we lost anyway, but you want to give your team their best chance)
  14. I guess I am choosing to live in the 'now', in which sense he is one of our top 5 starters (i.e. he is capable of starting today) and thus he did 'earn' his promotion. If you want to bring in the argument that May shouldn't be in the bullpen anyway, that is fine with me (and, if pressed, I would agree with you). But May IS NOT ABLE to start today, and thus (for today) is not one of our top 5 starters.
  15. I have no answer to the rest of your post, but I think referring to Duffey's placement on the 2015 prospect lists is a little mis-leading. He has knocked more than 1 run off his AA/AAA ERA from last year and increased his strikeout rate. I think it is fair to say that he will/would shoot up lists this year. Heck, at this point you could argue that he is a better prospect than Meyer!
  16. What a great report, you must have dug really deep into Gameday to come up with some of those points! I definitely appreciate the 'beyond the boxscore' approach. I'll assume your 'ND' status caused the 'swing and a miss' on this one, but how could you not use the line of: Nate Gercken got into a little pickle and allowed three runs to score in three innings. ?
  17. Hey Seth, Quezada doesn't have an AaP page, can you tell us a little more about the large (6'6") Dominican? Any idea on how he goes from a 48:38 W:SO(!) in 29 DSL innings last year to 3:10 in 11 innings this year in the GCL?
  18. Let it go... don't make the obvious joke... Let it go, let it go, let it go Let it go, let it go, let it go Let it go, let it go, let it go Let it go, let it go, let it go Oh hell,
  19. Sorry, the comparison to Slowey was meant to ask whether he was getting results primarily via impeccable control of an 88-92 mph fastball, which isn't a path to MLB success. In regards to Sleger's overall performance, I'll concede that he has done better than I thought, and closed out last year between low- and high-A with a string of 9 very effective starts (with a WHIP of <1.0 and nearly 1 SO/Inn). However, I don't think you can say he was good for 4 out of 5 months when his May and June ERAs were 6.83 and 7.97, and the clunkers started on May 9 and ended on June 26!
  20. But the 'low 90's' is the new 'high 80's'! I really wish we could be excited about Slegers, but it seems like he has absolutely NO steam with the national crowd. Do we know anything about his breaking pitches? Is he the second coming of Kevin Slowey, which actually wouldn't be such a bad thing for a 5th round pick (although Slowey rocketed up the ML)? To what extent do the crickets reflect last year's disaster, and why is he better this year?
  21. The thing I don't like about the back-and-forth on Walker is that, despite the fact that I like him enough to have had him as my adopt-a-prospect 2 years ago, it drives me to be almost 'happy' when he has an 0-4 night with 3 strikeouts. I can not remember ever having a twinge of rooting against a Twins prospect.
  22. I am sorry, I thought the 'philosophical discord' you were speaking of had to do with Vargas and the Twins. I have not seen any quotes attributed to the 'Big Spoon' objecting to his handling by the Twins. Now that I see the 'philosophical discord' is between you/Aaron Gleeman and the Twins I understand completely.
  23. What "philosophical discord" are you referring to? It's not like he is David Arias; he seems to use the whole field. And I don't recall the Twins being down on him for lack of contact; and his SO and W:SO rates in the minors weren't ABWII-like. Did I miss something?
  24. Look at me... not even satisfied with a 98mph anymore ! Do you think they will try to stretch him out a bit and use him as a starter again next year?
