  1. The problem is we are baseball fans. It doesn't matter how bad they are, I will watch. I will go to the games. It's actually cheaper to attend games now that they stink. Once the new crop of young players arrive and they attain some level of success, it will be harder to get cheap tickets. To be honest, I would rather they win and make it hard to get good tickets.
  2. Appreciate any updates on the events of the night and any new information for those of use unable to attend. Unless you guys that were in attendance are still in bed at 2:00pm in the afternoon.
  3. Good point. I was thinking about that same thing, but Jhonny Peralta didn't seem to have any problem finding a job after his suspension. Do you think that really enters into way teams seem to have passed him over? I was thinking more along the lines of aging power hitter that wasn't stellar in the field that may have had his stats inflated by the park he played and in and the talent protecting him in the lineup. Maybe his best years are behind him.
  4. Another player that turned down his qualifying offer and may have it backfire on him. With any team that signs him forced to give up a draft pick, the market is no where near where he thought it would be when he made the decision to leave Texas. Righted handed power is not an easy thing to come by. How low would the price have to go before he would turn into a valuable pick up. On the positive side - you can't ever have too much depth on your roster and you can't ever have too much power. Worst case scenario is that he becomes a valuable trade chip at the break. On the negative side - As a corner outfielder, he would probably end up taking away at bats from Arica. He is only one year younger than Josh Willingham.
  5. Thanks for sharing. In the past, all season ticket holder were all given free tickets to Twinsfest. That ended this year as well. Granted all proceeds from Twinsfest do go to the Twins Community fund, so it is not as if there are making a profit from this. There have to be considerable expenses to putting on an event like this, what with travel and lodging for all of the players and just staffing target field for the three days is a huge undertaking. Just doesn't seem right for a team with 3 consecutive 90+ loss seasons. They should be working on attracting more fans, not making things more costly and difficult.
  6. "To get back to 19, let me just say this, it would take a pennant race in September in order for us to get there," St. Peter said. "If we're having a good season, it's feasible you could add a couple thousand FSEs during the course of the season. That's possible. But if you're not in contention, that's going to be tough." With the boost they received from the All start game, the true level of interest in the Twins could actually be, as viewed in FSE terms to be in the 14,000 to 15,000 range. I would guess that a .500 season in 2014 would bring us to that level if not lower. They have been doing a lot of advertising for Twinsfest and with the limited number of tickets available because of the space constraints of Target Field, it is a telling sign that you can still get in on Sunday. I have heard that Saturday is sold out.
  7. Opening day tickets went on sale yesterday at 4:00pm. One day later and there are still plenty of tickets left in a variety of good sections of the field.
  8. I agree that the odds of picking up Garza are not good, but I don't think it is about money. If there were something that Terry really wanted he would make the move, but honestly I think most of us viewed Garza as a long shot from the very beginning. 1) Injury - real or perceived to sign someone to a 3 or 4 year deal they want to be pretty sure that the player is going to be on the field for a majority of the contract. 2) temperament - real or perceived things didn't end well the last time he was on the roster. Both Gardy and Terry were involved in some difficult times with the guy and were very involved in the decision to trade away a young player with a lot of talent. 3) old school GM - Terry isn't going to get into a bidding war, especially when another GM is already in the final stages of signing a FA. From the very beginning. TR looked at the starting pitching options, targeted who he wanted and then set out to sign 2 or 3 of them. We may all disagree with he evaluation and who he ultimately signed, but I'm sure he is comfortable and confident with what he accomplished this off season. I can still see him addressing some other positions such as outfield, but I would be surprised if we sign another starting pitcher.
  9. It must not be obvious, because there are many people in favor of the Twins making a signing such as this. Only commit big money and a lot of years to proven commodities. It's not a good idea to get in a bidding war with teams that can afford to make a mistake and eat a bad contract. Although we are coming off of three terrible seasons, the light at the end of the tunnel are the following facts. 1) plenty of young talent in the system 2) we currently don't have any huge bad contracts preventing us from making intelligent moves, when the time is right. The time will be right, when we need one or two key pieces to put us in a position to make a run in the postseason. We are not even close to the point where we should be sliding all of our chips into the center of the table.
  10. No thanks. If we are going to lock up a pitcher for 6, 7 or 8 years, this is not the guy. A contract like this could really hurt a team long term if he doesn't preform at a true number one or if he misses time due to injury.
  11. great article. thanks for sharing.
  12. Nice article JC and nice argument. I'm not buying it, but nice logical approach. Terry still has money to spend, but I think he puts it down on an outfielder. Interesting couple of months to see if he spends some more money and if so, where he spends it.
  13. I'm pretty sure that is sarcasm. As a matter of fact, I think it is hilarious.
  14. Nice recap thrylos. I think the key thing, as you mentioned is that this is December. Things tend to sort themselves out by April. Injuries, performance and trades will take care of most of the current questions we have and it will seem obvious what needs to be done.
  15. I'm with the chief on this one. Presley and Hicks complete for the spot and if Hicks plays like he did last spring he wins the job. It takes most players a few trips to the majors before they figure things out. It was a tough year for Hicks, but I'm confident that he will come back fighting for a spot on opening day. I think he will earn the spot, the question is whether he will stick once the season starts.
  16. I'm sure it has been a tough couple of years for Worley. He was sitting on top of the world after the 2011 season. 11-3 with a 3.01 era on the team with the best record in baseball. I remember listening to him after the trade and he sounded like he just needed a fresh start after a difficult 2012 season. I'm sure he thought that a new team in a pitcher friendly park would fix his problems and he could get back to what he accomplished in 2011. As was mentioned, we really haven't heard anything about Worley. this is the time of year where we see some reports about how hard he is working out, about how he has lost 30 pounds and is in the best shape of his life. Do we have someone working on such an article? I'm sure he still believes he can get back to where he was 2 years ago.
  17. I don't see a log jam at First. It is Joe Mauer for 140 Plus games. I believe Colabello was deciding between Korea or another organization. I don't believe he has a future with the Twins. He may make it to Rochester, but I don't think he will be on the 25 man roster in 2014.
  18. Best line from the article. There’s really just no good reason not to protect pitchers’ heads if it doesn’t affect the game in any other way. Batters used to wear caps and not helmets to bat. then they went to hard caps with no earflaps. I still remember Dave Winfield as one of the last players to bat with the old helmet with no earflaps. In time, it will look strange to see a pitcher on the mound without protective head gear.
  19. So what do Terry and the Twins think of this decision? Is this similar to Hicks deciding not to play winter ball? When your team decides to sell your rights and you decide not to go, is the writing on the wall? I can't see a scenario where the relationship isn't strained after something like this. I completely understand Colabello's desire to not go. Is it worth a million to uproot your whole life and go someplace where you don't know the language, don't know the culture and really don't have any friends or family? I can see his side of things, but where does he now stand with the organization?
  20. Can anyone shed some light on this? I was surprised last offseason when both Liriano and Napoli had their contracts changed (reduced money and years) after the physical. It was always my understanding that each of the teams has access to the players medical records and have physicians on hand to review those medical histories (including x-rays and MRI's) before they even start negotiating. The only time that the contract should be off is when something new shows up. I think last year Frankie hurt himself in the offseason, while down in the DR. that was something new something that wasn't in his medical history. If the two sides agree to a contract and then the player gets in a car accident or cuts off a finger, I can see that as a change in terms, but this seems different. In Balfour's case, I'm sure he had MRI's in his medical file that the O's had access to prior to the physical. They knew what surgery's he had in the past. I'm sure that they had up to date every. What could Balfour have done to his shoulder on the way to the physical? Was it a ploy to get him to sign for less? Did they change their minds? Did the Doctors really find something new?
  21. Ok, but Suzuki is from Hawaii. Not sure he will be much good at recruiting.
  22. I don't think we will see parmelee or Ploufe in the outfield in 2014. Parmelee is a fist baseman and he is now a backup to Joe and will probably start the year in Rochester. That leaves 4 question marks for the remaining 3 spots. Hicks--I like Hicks, I think he will show a lot of improvement over his rookie year. He will need to prove himself and is far from a sure thing. Arcia-- I like Arcia, I think he will show a lot of improvement over his rookie year. I think he will hit in the majors, but not sure he will establish himself as an everyday player this year. Presley is a fourth outfielder. A younger version of Repko. He is a good defensive replacement and spot starter, but we shouldn't put him out there for even 40 starts in 2014. Masty, I feel that same way about Darin Mastroianni. A good 4th outfielder, but he is getting older and we can't carry both hiim and Presley on the roster. Willingham-- I hope he will return to his 2012 form but I'm not counting on it. It really seemed like that was his career year. Even with that fantastic year at the plate, he was a defensive liability. He should get about half his starts as a DH and the other half as a left fielder. Kubel is also in the mix, but again he should rotate DH and outfield responsibilities. I guess the recap of my thoughts is that not all of these guys are going to make it. I think we are set in the infield, but we still have too many questions in the outfield. We need another good all around outfielder that can play center if Hicks and Presley don't blossom into an everyday player.
  23. It may be a situation where Suzuki will benefit from only playing on a limited basis. With a full season to heal up and then only take the beating of playing behind the plate a couple of times per week he may improve in both behind the plate and at the plate statistics. I too think we needed to give our pitching staff more than pinto and Herman/Fryer. A pitcher is only going to succeed with a good relationship with his catcher. I think this is often overlooked. I think a veteran presence was needed behind the plate. At under 3 million, we did alright with Suzuki. If he can improve by staying healthy, all the better. I still think we need another outfielder.
  24. I like the move. Gilmartin's numbers got progressively worse as he moved up, but he is still only 23. Can't ever have too many young, left handed starters.
  25. Nice article JC. I will add that I think Terry was given the same speech last off season and he couldn't bring him himself to sign some of the big name pitchers that he knew had flaws. By the time we hit January and he found himself with a terrible pitching staff and a lot of money in his pocket, he literally "couldn't give the money away". Terry is sharp, he wasn't going to let that happen again. He knew the 6 or 8 guys he liked in this seasons FA class and the first 3 to put their signature to paper were Twins.
