  1. Why would Bert take a job that requires more work, more responsibility and less pay than the one he currently has?
  2. I believe other teams could interview Maddon without firing their current manager. They don't have to fire their current manager until Maddon accepts the job.
  3. Arcia shouldn't be in Right Field let alone Left.
  4. 2 years is probably a low estimate, 5-6 is probably more accurate. If Molitor is the new manager, Doug should be the bench coach for training.
  5. Generally, the new manager gets to pick his coaching staff. Ryan will have input and may recommend that some be hired (Bruno, Molitor, Steinbach, Cuellar).
  6. First, Mauer has 4 years left on his contract. 2nd I have no problem with giving top pitchers $20-30M/yr. The issue I have with pitchers is the length of contracts greater than 5 years. That is because I believe that a pitcher has a greater chance to sustain a career ending injury than a position player. Until baseball does away with multi-year guaranteed contracts that will be my stance. How many pitchers that have sign 5+ year contracts actually performed well enough to justify their salary for the majority of the contract? Johan didn't, Cliff Lee fell of the cliff.
  7. I understand what you are saying, but the financial situation between football and baseball is different. Sure in football they could draft a QB every year (or sign as a FA) and try him out and release him if he doesn't work out. All they would be out is a signing bonus and possibly the current years Salary and that's it ($10-20M total). In baseball, unless you groom your own Elite SP or acquire him before he becomes and Elite SP you have to sign him for 5-7 years at $100-200M. If he doesn't work out you are stuck with him for 5-7 years or you have to eat $100-200M. The Twins will never sign a pitcher for 5+ years (no other teams should either). So that leaves drafting pitchers and waiting for them to develop or trading for other teams minor leaguers that you think can be elite (like Santana).
  8. With the off day today, they don't need the 5th starter until Saturday. I'm almost positive that it will be Milone.
  9. The new site looks great. I have a question. I used to view the forums by clicking "what's new" or something like that. I can still do that on the mobile site, but I can't find it on the desktop site. Is that feature still here?
  10. Barring a setback, Gibson will be on the opening day roster. He has already begun throwing and will be pitching in games before the end of the season.
  11. Unless Slama is added to the 40-man this year (which may happen) he will leave after this season. He can become a minor league FA after this season and I think that he will leave to go to a team that will actually give him an opportunity to pitch in the majors.
  12. Nice article, but I have 1 correction for you, Mauer "only" pays taxes in Minnesota for half of his income ($900,000 in tax revenue). He (and all professional athletes) pay taxes in the states where the income was earned, not where he is employed or resides. Mauer actually pays a little more than that as Minnesota has a reciprocity agreement with Wisconsin so he pays his Wisconsin tax to Minnesota.
  13. If this han't been planned weeks ago, I would agree with you. But since it was scheduled ahead of time that he would miss the enitre series, I have no issues with it.
  14. I agree with this to a point, but it seems that Gardy has lost the respect and control over his team. He seems to have difficulty managing the younger players. If that is true than it is time for a change. It is similar to the Tony Dungy situation in Tampa. He brought the team back to respectability but couldn't take them any further. So he moved on to Indy and Gruden got Tampa the title. I think Gardy has taken this club as far as he can go and it is time for both parties to try something new.
  15. Out of all of those guys listed, only Molitor would consider the job and he turned it down once already. But that was 10 years ago, the situation may have changed since then. Hrbek enjoys his free time and outdoor activity too much. Smalley, Laudner and Gladden make as much if not more with their broadcasting gigs with a lot less stress.
  16. Actually with the addition of Thomas and with Morneau playing some 1B, early on it will affect Doumit more than Parmelee. Morneau will get Mauer's starts at 1B with Mauer DH'ing. Parmelee will still get 60% of the starts @ 1B.
